GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Online Accounting Services: Our Analysis

Everything runs through a secure client portal with e-signatures, so the engagement works identically from any province or time zone. Compilation engagements now follow CSRS 4200, which sets out the basis-of-accounting note every lender expects to see attached to the statements. Because the fee is fixed and budget-friendly, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

What the Paperwork Teaches Us About Online Accounting Services

Good online accounting services work is mostly about sequencing: which questions to settle before which. These notes lay out the sequence a tax advisor follows on Online Accounting Services engagements.

Before anything else, one rule sets the frame. Shareholder loan balances must be repaid within one year of the corporation’s following year-end. If they are not, the amount is included in the shareholder’s personal income under subsection 15(2).

Layer a second constraint on top and the picture sharpens: Accrued but unbilled revenue belongs in income in the year the work was performed. Deferring it to the invoice date understates taxable income and is a standard reassessment adjustment. The third rule is where the real exposure hides. The CRA expects the trial balance behind a T2 to reconcile to the GIFI schedules filed with it. A statement set that does not tie to the return is the first thing a reviewer notices.

None of this requires you to become an expert — that is what engaging a tax practitioner is for. What it does require is recognizing that online accounting services will reward preparation over improvisation. To move quickly, have your ledger exports, bank statements and prior filings ready when we start.

Every file we prepare is reviewed with you before anything is filed, the fee is fixed and agreed up front, and you pay only after the service is delivered. If online accounting services is on your list, the conversation costs nothing to start.

Online Accounting Services Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Online Accounting Services tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Corporate Structure Rebuilt For $55,000 Of Annual Savings — Commercial Cleaning Contractor, Edmonton

The structure at a commercial cleaning contractor in Edmonton, Alberta no longer fitted the business. Two sets of numbers — one in the accounting file, one the owner actually ran the business on showed it. Rebuilding it saves $55,000 a year.

The structure at a commercial cleaning contractor in Edmonton, Alberta dated from years earlier. It had been set up for a business that no longer existed. Two sets of numbers — one in the accounting file, one the owner actually ran the business on had become expensive. We set a monthly close calendar with a fixed cut-off, so the year-end became a review of work already done rather than a twelve-month rebuild. The reorganisation used the rollover provisions rather than a taxable transfer, so no tax fell due on the restructuring itself. $55,000 of annual saving, achieved on a tax-deferred basis. The minute book, elections and valuations are all in the file.

Case Study 2

Second-Province Expansion Handled, $57,000 Of Cash Released — Related-Company Pair, Windsor

A corporation sharing administration with a related company in Windsor, Ontario expanded into a second province. The file already carried a bank that refused to renew an operating line without compliant statements. Every obligation was set up in advance and $57,000 of cash released.

Revenue at a corporation sharing administration with a related company in Windsor, Ontario was up sharply and cash was tighter than ever. Underneath it sat a bank that refused to renew an operating line without compliant statements. We built a fixed-asset continuity schedule from the purchase invoices. We set the capital cost allowance claim class by class rather than claiming the maximum by default. Every new obligation was set up before it was triggered, not after. That covered registration, remittance frequency and provincial filing. $57,000 of cash was released from the working capital cycle. The expansion completed with every registration and filing obligation covered from day one.

Case Study 3

$83,000 Of Penalties And Interest Cancelled On Relief — Quarterly-Close Practice, Surrey

A professional practice that closes its books quarterly in Surrey, British Columbia was carrying $83,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from year-end statements that arrived four months late and never tied to the bank. A relief application cancelled that amount.

An assessment of $83,000 landed at a professional practice that closes its books quarterly in Surrey, British Columbia following a desk review. It turned on year-end statements that arrived four months late and never tied to the bank. The auditor had not seen the records behind it. We reconciled the general ledger to the GIFI schedules filed for each open year and corrected the two years where they disagreed. We then set out the legislative basis for the position alongside the documents supporting it. $83,000 of penalties and interest was cancelled under the taxpayer relief provisions, and the underlying assessment was adjusted to match the filed position.

Case Study 4

Audit Defence Closed In 6 Weeks, $79,000 Cleared — Design Agency, Guelph

A 14-person design agency in Guelph, Ontario was under review. The issue was a year-end moved informally, leaving twelve months of trading reported as though nothing had changed. The file closed in 6 weeks with $79,000 of proposed tax cleared.

A 14-person design agency in Guelph, Ontario was selected for review. A year-end moved informally, leaving twelve months of trading reported as though nothing had changed had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on online accounting services came to $79,000. We rebuilt the trial balance from source documents, reconciled every bank and credit-card account, and issued a CSRS 4200 compilation with a proper basis-of-accounting note. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $79,000 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 5

$32,000 Late-Filing Penalty Cancelled On Relief Application — Two-Partner Engineering Firm, Burnaby

A two-partner engineering firm in Burnaby, British Columbia had already been penalised. The issue was work in progress carried at billing value one year and at cost the next, so neither year was comparable. A relief application cancelled $32,000 of that penalty.

A two-partner engineering firm in Burnaby, British Columbia had already missed one deadline and was about to miss a second. Behind it sat work in progress carried at billing value one year and at cost the next, so neither year was comparable. A penalty of $32,000 was accruing. We split the work into what had to happen before the deadline and what could follow it. Then we reconciled the inter-company accounts, papered the arrangement with a written agreement, and aligned both corporations’ year-ends. The outstanding return was accepted as filed, and the taxpayer relief application cancelled $32,000 of the penalty already assessed on the earlier year.

Case Study 6

$81,000 In Credits Claimed That Prior Filings Had Missed — Independent Pharmacy, Vancouver

7 years of filings at an independent pharmacy in Vancouver, British Columbia had never claimed the incentives the work qualified for. The review recovered $81,000.

An independent pharmacy in Vancouver, British Columbia had been filing for 7 years. In that time, the incentives its activity qualified for were never claimed. Behind that sat inter-company balances between two related corporations that had never been reconciled. We tested each activity against the eligibility criteria rather than the description on the invoice. Then we valued work in progress on one consistent basis and documented the method, so the comparative year could be relied on. $81,000 in credits claimed, with the open prior years adjusted as well. The claim passed review without adjustment.

Frequently Asked Questions on Online Accounting Services

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Online Accounting Services cost in Canada?

Online Accounting Services starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Online Accounting Services?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Online Accounting Services take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Online Accounting Services?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Online Accounting Services different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Online Accounting Services?

Our online accounting services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Online Accounting Services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

Is online accounting services something I can catch up on if I have fallen behind?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. The CRA expects the trial balance behind a T2 to reconcile to the GIFI schedules filed with it. A statement set that does not tie to the return is the first thing a reviewer notices. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

How is your approach to online accounting services different from doing it through software?

A tax preparation specialist answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. Accrued but unbilled revenue belongs in income in the year the work was performed. Deferring it to the invoice date understates taxable income and is a standard reassessment adjustment. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

What Canadians Search About Online Accounting Services

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Work out the tax you actually owe for the year, then compare it with what has already been paid. Total your income, subtract deductions to reach taxable income, apply the federal and provincial brackets, take off your credits, and set the result against the tax withheld on your T4 and other slips plus any instalments. If more was withheld than you owe, the difference is your refund. Tax software approved for NETFILE runs the same arithmetic once your slips are entered.

Yes. Tips and gratuities are income and must be reported, whether they reach you through your employer or straight from the customer. Controlled tips your employer distributes appear on your T4 with payroll deductions already taken. Direct and cash tips usually appear on no slip at all, so you report them yourself on your T1 from your own records. Keep a daily log, because the CRA can estimate unreported tip income.

A write-off is simply a deductible expense. You subtract it from the income it helped earn, so the saving equals the expense multiplied by your marginal tax rate, not the full amount spent. To qualify, the cost must be incurred to earn business or employment income, be reasonable in amount, and be backed by a receipt. Purely personal costs never qualify, and mixed-use items such as a vehicle or a home office are split by business-use proportion.

Payroll treats each cheque as though you earned that amount every period, so a bonus, overtime, retroactive raise or an extra shift makes the cheque look like a higher annual income and more tax comes off it. A change in pay frequency, a new TD1, or a taxable benefit added mid-year does the same. CPP and EI stop for the year once their maximums are reached, so take-home often rises later on. Your return reconciles the total.

Not on a Canadian personal return. Net income there is total income minus deductions such as RRSP contributions and union dues, worked out before any tax is applied, and it is the figure used to test income-tested benefits and credits. In everyday payroll language, net pay does mean what reaches your account after tax and other withholdings. For a corporation it depends on the statement: accounting net income is normally after tax, while the return starts from income before tax.

Options range from free community volunteer clinics for simple returns on a modest income, through NETFILE-certified software you use yourself, to a tax preparer or accounting firm that files on your behalf. Choose based on complexity: a single T4 is straightforward, while self-employment, rental property, investments or a corporation usually warrant professional help. Our fees are fixed and agreed before we start, and you pay after the service.

Commonly a tax preparer, tax accountant or tax specialist. Titles are not standardised in Canada: some preparers hold an accounting designation, others are bookkeepers, tax technicians or lawyers who focus on tax. What matters more than the label is that the person is registered with the CRA to file electronically for clients, carries a business number, quotes the fee in writing, and signs the return as preparer where required.

Call the individual tax enquiries line listed on the CRA's contact page on canada.ca; the automated menu leads to an agent during business hours. Have your social insurance number, date of birth and an amount from a recent return ready, because the agent cannot open your file without them. Walk-in counter service is not offered, and in-person help is limited and by appointment. If you would rather not deal with the CRA yourself, authorise a representative in My Account or with an AUT-01.

Most issuers no longer mail T5 information returns. The CRA expects them to be filed electronically through its internet filing service, and electronic filing is required once you are over the CRA's slip-count threshold. If you are still filing on paper, send the summary and slips to the information returns processing address shown on the CRA's T5 page, since the destination centre changes from time to time. Keep a copy for six years.

Most Canadian banks let you pay an amount owing by adding the CRA as a payee through their bill payment or business tax service. You need your business number with the RT program identifier and the reporting period you are paying, or the payment can be misapplied. Paying is not filing: submit the return itself through My Business Account or your software. CRA My Payment, pre-authorised debit and wire transfer are the other routes.

Retirement income is taxed at the same graduated federal and provincial rates as employment income, so the bill depends on how much you draw and from which sources. CPP, OAS, employer pension payments and RRSP or RRIF withdrawals are fully taxable, while TFSA withdrawals are not, and eligible dividends and capital gains in a non-registered account are taxed more lightly. Age and pension credits, plus pension income splitting between spouses, usually bring the total down.
