Taxpayer Relief Request: Our Analysis

A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the notice of assessment, and individuals have a further year to apply for an extension. Our taxpayer relief request engagement is priced as a budget-friendly flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

A Tax Expert's Notes on Taxpayer Relief Request

If you handle Taxpayer Relief Request once a year, everything looks equally important. Handle it weekly, as a tax expert does, and a clear hierarchy emerges; these notes follow that hierarchy.

The foundation is simple to state and easy to trip over: The normal reassessment period runs three years from the original notice of assessment for an individual or a CCPC and four years for other corporations. A waiver signed at an auditor’s request removes that limit for the issue it describes, and it stays open until it is revoked.

Then comes the detail that separates a clean file from an expensive one: Once the CRA confirms an assessment or reassesses following an objection, the next step is an appeal to the Tax Court of Canada within 90 days. An extension has to be applied for rather than assumed, and the merits of the position do not extend the deadline. Calendars matter more than most people expect in taxpayer relief request, and this is the rule that proves it: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it.

For you, the takeaway is less about memorizing rules and more about timing the conversation. Bringing a tax expert in early on taxpayer relief request means the rules shape the file instead of correcting it. Nothing slows a file like missing records, so for taxpayer relief request begin with.

You will see the finished work before it goes anywhere — review-before-filing is standard here, not an add-on. The fee is fixed up front, and nothing is payable until the service is done.

Common Questions Before Starting Taxpayer Relief Request Work

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Taxpayer Relief Request cost in Canada?

Taxpayer Relief Request starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Taxpayer Relief Request?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Taxpayer Relief Request take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Taxpayer Relief Request?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Taxpayer Relief Request different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Taxpayer Relief Request services?

Our taxpayer relief request services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Taxpayer Relief Request services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What goes wrong most often with taxpayer relief request?

Our answer starts where the legislation starts. The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay. From there it is a matter of applying it to your year — and that application, not the rule itself, is where a tax expert earns the fee.

What does a tax practitioner actually check during taxpayer relief request?

The honest answer comes down to one rule. The VDP can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest on unreported income or unfiled returns — but only while the disclosure is genuinely voluntary. The window closes the moment the CRA makes contact about the issue. Acting before that letter arrives is worth real money. That is the part we verify before anything is filed.

What Canadians Search About Taxpayer Relief Request

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

If you owe nothing, no penalty applies, but a refund and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit and the GST/HST credit are held up until the return is processed. If you owe, a late-filing penalty is charged and interest runs on the balance and compounds daily from the day after the due date. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026. File even if you cannot pay, because the penalty is driven by filing, not payment.

Federal tax is the share of income tax that goes to the federal government, charged on taxable income in graduated brackets that are the same everywhere in Canada. Your total bill is that federal amount plus your province or territory's own tax, less the credits you claim. Payroll deductions shown on a T4 cover both layers. Quebec residents receive a refundable abatement of their federal tax because Quebec opted out of certain federal-provincial programs and funds them itself; separately, Quebec also collects its provincial tax through its own return.

Canada taxes income at graduated rates: federal brackets plus your province's brackets apply, and only the income sitting inside a bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate. The rate on your next dollar is your marginal rate, while the share of your total income you actually pay is lower, because credits such as the basic personal amount shelter the first slice. Look up the current federal and provincial brackets for your province, or run your figures through the CRA payroll calculator.

Revenue Canada is the former name of the Canada Revenue Agency. The CRA is the federal body that administers income tax, GST/HST, payroll deductions and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit, and it collects provincial income tax for every province except Quebec, which runs its own personal system through Revenu Québec. The old name is still in everyday use, so paying Revenue Canada means paying the CRA, and a letter from either is the same agency.

Pay it the same way you pay any CRA balance: through your financial institution's online banking using the CRA as a payee, through My Account or My Business Account, by pre-authorised debit, by debit or credit through a third-party provider, or at a bank counter with a remittance voucher. Choose the correct account and tax year so it is applied properly. If the penalty came from circumstances beyond your control, form RC4288 asks the CRA to cancel or waive it.

For your own tax information, ask for a personal information request through the federal ATIP online portal, or submit the government's request form to the CRA's access to information office. Name the years and the type of record - notices of assessment, audit working papers, collections notes - because a narrow request is answered faster. Check CRA My Account first: slips, notices and account balances are already there at no cost.

Usually a tax preparer, tax accountant, or bookkeeper, depending on what they actually do. In Canada no single licence is required to prepare someone else's return, so the titles vary widely and are worth asking about. To transmit your return electronically a preparer needs an EFILE number from the CRA, and to discuss your file with the CRA they must be authorised as your representative, either through My Account or with an AUT-01. Confirm the scope and the fee before work starts.

There is no age or milestone at which refunds stop. A refund only means more tax was withheld or paid by instalments during the year than the return finally calculates, so it turns on your income mix each year. Retirees often stop seeing refunds because pension, RRIF and investment income tends to be under-withheld, which produces a balance owing instead. You can ask a payer to withhold more, or pay instalments, to change that.

Six broad families. Income tax on individuals and corporations. Payroll contributions, meaning CPP and EI. Consumption taxes, meaning GST, HST and provincial sales taxes. Excise duties on fuel, alcohol, tobacco and vaping products. Property and land transfer taxes charged by municipalities and provinces. And tax on gains, including the gains treated as realised on death. Customs duties on imports sit alongside them. Most households only ever deal with the first three.

Two separate charges. The late-filing penalty is a percentage of the balance owing when you file after the deadline: 5% of that balance plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of 12 months. Interest is charged on any unpaid balance and on the penalty itself, compounded daily at the prescribed rate the CRA sets each quarter. Look up the current quarter's rate on the CRA's prescribed interest rates page.

The unpaid balance keeps building compound daily interest at the CRA's prescribed rate until it is cleared, and it does not disappear when you file again; any new refund is applied against it first. Once collections start the CRA can also offset benefit payments, garnish wages or freeze an account. File the next return on time regardless, then set up a payment arrangement you can keep. If penalties and interest came from circumstances beyond your control, request relief on an RC4288.

A genuine CRA call can show as blocked, private or an unfamiliar number, so the display proves nothing either way. Judge the call by its content. The CRA will not demand payment by gift card, cryptocurrency or e-transfer, will not threaten immediate arrest or deportation, and will not ask for a passport or banking password. Hang up, then call an enquiry line published on canada.ca or check My Account for a real balance.
