CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance: Our Analysis

A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the notice of assessment, and individuals have a further year to apply for an extension. Because the fee is fixed and affordable, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

From the Desk of Your Tax Filing Specialist

After years of preparing cra clearance certificate assistance files week in and week out, a tax filing specialist starts to see the same handful of decisions shape almost every outcome. These notes cover the ones that matter for CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance.

Ask any tax filing specialist where cra clearance certificate assistance files go sideways, and the answer usually traces back to this: The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay.

It would be simpler if the story ended there, but a second rule enters almost immediately. The VDP can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest on unreported income or unfiled returns — but only while the disclosure is genuinely voluntary. The window closes the moment the CRA makes contact about the issue. Acting before that letter arrives is worth real money. On the record-keeping side, one rule governs what must be kept and what must be shown: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it.

Reading rules is one thing; knowing which of them your file actually triggers is another. A tax consultant closes that gap, and for cra clearance certificate assistance the gap is often wider than it looks. Before the first meeting, it helps to pull together the records that let a tax filing specialist see your situation whole.

As with everything we file: fixed fee agreed first, your review before submission, payment after service.

CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

$22,500 Cut From The Annual Tax Bill — Assessed Shareholder, Regina

A shareholder assessed on a taxable benefit in Regina, Saskatchewan was filing correctly and still overpaying. The reason was an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for. Restructuring the position cut $22,500 from the annual bill.

A shareholder assessed on a taxable benefit in Regina, Saskatchewan was compliant but paying more than it needed to. The prior year had been filed correctly. It still left an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for on the table. We modelled the current position against the alternatives before changing anything. Then we answered each query in writing with an indexed document package, so the file showed exactly what the auditor had received and on what date. The change saved $22,500 in the first year and repeats annually. Nothing about the filings became more aggressive. The position is simply the one the rules already allowed.

Case Study 2

Audit Defence Closed In 7 Weeks, $15,000 Cleared — Corporation Under GST/HST Review, Toronto

A corporation under a GST/HST review in Toronto, Ontario was under review. The issue was a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. The file closed in 7 weeks with $15,000 of proposed tax cleared.

A corporation under a GST/HST review in Toronto, Ontario was selected for review. A proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on CRA clearance certificate assistance came to $15,000. We traced each unexplained deposit to its source — loans, transfers between accounts, an insurance settlement — and reduced the net-worth assessment accordingly. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $15,000 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 3

Intergenerational Transfer Completed With $180,000 Deferred — Family Business Under Review, Saskatoon

A family transfer at a family business under a related-party review in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan would have been fully taxable. The reason was passive assets sitting inside the operating company, disqualifying the shares. Restructuring deferred $180,000.

A generational transfer at a family business under a related-party review in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan had been discussed for years without a plan. Passive assets sitting inside the operating company, disqualifying the shares meant the transfer as contemplated would have been fully taxable. We assembled the contemporaneous records, filed a structured response to each proposed adjustment with the supporting documents indexed, and had the proposal withdrawn. We sequenced the steps so each one was complete and documented before the next depended on it. $180,000 of tax was deferred through the transfer, and the successor generation took over a corporation whose records stood up to review.

Case Study 4

Reorganisation Completed Tax-Deferred, $43,000 Saved Each Year — Taxpayer Relief Applicant, Barrie

A taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Barrie, Ontario had outgrown its structure. The visible cost was six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. The reorganisation completed tax-deferred and saves $43,000 a year.

A taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Barrie, Ontario had outgrown the structure it started with. Six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file was the immediate problem. The longer-term one was that the structure blocked the next step. We mapped the current structure and modelled the target. Then we filed the Tax Court appeal inside the window and resolved the remaining adjustments before a hearing date was needed. The tax-deferred elections were filed on time and the supporting valuations documented. The reorganisation completed without triggering tax, and the new structure saves approximately $43,000 a year while removing the exposure the old one carried.

Case Study 5

11-Week Turnaround Beat The Deadline And Saved $114,000 — Director Facing Assessment, Winnipeg

An 11-week rebuild at a business owner with a director liability assessment in Winnipeg, Manitoba got the filing in with 20 days to spare. That avoided $114,000 in penalties.

A business owner with a director liability assessment in Winnipeg, Manitoba was weeks away from the deadline for CRA clearance certificate assistance. Behind that sat an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. The exposure if the date slipped was around $114,000. We kept the waiver narrowed to the issue actually under review and let the remaining years close on the normal reassessment period. The filing went in complete rather than provisional, so there was no amended return to follow. Filed with 20 days to spare. $114,000 in late-filing penalties avoided, and the working papers are ready for the following year.

Case Study 6

Instalments Rebased, $19,000 Of Cash Returned To The Business — Importer Under Audit, Red Deer

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Red Deer, Alberta was overpaying instalments. The cause was a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. Rebasing them returned $19,000 to the business.

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Red Deer, Alberta was paying instalments calculated on a prior year. That year no longer reflected the business. A net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds was tying up $19,000 of cash. We rebased the instalments on the current-year estimate rather than the prior-year default. Alongside that, we filed the disclosure through the Voluntary Disclosures Program before contact, which removed the gross-negligence penalty entirely. $19,000 of cash stayed in the business, the penalty cycle ended, and the instalment position is reviewed each quarter against actual results.

Straight Answers on CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance Filing

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance cost in Canada?

CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance services?

Our cra clearance certificate assistance services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What happens during the first meeting about cra clearance certificate assistance?

The honest starting point is this: The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay. Everything else we would tell you is tailoring, and tailoring requires seeing your file.

How do you price cra clearance certificate assistance for a small business?

It depends less on opinion than owners assume. A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the date of the notice of assessment. Individuals can instead object up to one year after the filing due date if that is later; corporations have only the 90 days. Any taxpayer who misses the deadline can apply for an extension within the following year. Once you know that, the practical question becomes timing and documentation — both of which we handle inside the engagement.

What Canadians Search About CRA Clearance Certificate Assistance

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Pay through your bank's online banking by adding the CRA as a payee and choosing the right account and year, through My Payment with a debit card, by pre-authorised debit scheduled in My Account, by credit card through a third-party provider that charges its own fee, or at a bank counter with a remittance voucher. For 2025 personal returns the payment deadline was 30 April 2026, including for the self-employed, and interest runs daily on anything unpaid after that.

Most enquiries are settled without a phone call in My Account, My Business Account or Represent a Client, where assessments, balances, slips and CRA mail all sit. When you need a person, use the enquiries line for your programme from the contact page on canada.ca, and have your social insurance or business number plus a figure from a recent return ready for identity checks. Written enquiries go to the tax centre named on your notice of assessment.

You can pay through CRA My Business Account or My Payment, through your own financial institution's online banking by adding the CRA GST/HST payment as a payee under your business number, or by pre-authorised debit arranged in My Business Account. Third-party providers accept credit cards for a fee. Payment is due by the deadline for your reporting period, and filing the return does not by itself move the money, so schedule the two separately.

Check My Account, which shows your current balance, any instalment requirement and the assessment for every year. The notice of assessment for your last filed return also states the balance, and the CRA's individual enquiries line can confirm it once you verify your identity. If returns are missing, the balance is not final until those years are filed. A representative can review it for you once authorised through Represent a Client or form AUT-01.

Call the CRA enquiries line for your situation, whether individual, benefits, business or collections, from the contact page on canada.ca, then work through the automated menu to reach an agent. Have your social insurance or business number, your address and a figure from a recently assessed return ready, because the agent cannot discuss the account without them. Early morning is usually quieter. To have someone speak for you, file an authorisation such as the AUT-01 first.

No. CRA collections officers cannot arrest anyone. What they can do, after sending a legal warning, is garnish wages, freeze and take funds from bank accounts, register a lien against property and offset your benefit payments. Arrest belongs to criminal tax evasion or fraud cases, which are investigated separately, charged by police and prosecuted in court. If you cannot pay a balance, contact the CRA about a payment arrangement before collection action starts.

Tax benefits come in two forms. Deductions and credits reduce what you owe on the return itself, including RRSP contributions, childcare, tuition, medical expenses and donations. Benefit payments are separate cash amounts the CRA pays based on that return, such as the Canada Child Benefit, the GST/HST credit and provincial supplements. Both require a filed return, and most benefit payments require each spouse to file. Miss a year and payments usually stop until the return arrives.

Scholarships, fellowships and bursaries are income, but a scholarship exemption usually removes the tax. A student enrolled full time in a qualifying educational program can generally exempt the whole amount received for that program, so nothing is added to taxable income. Part-time students get a narrower exemption tied to tuition and program costs. Amounts that are really payment for work, such as a stipend for research services, do not qualify and stay taxable.

An RRSP contribution is a deduction, so it lowers taxable income and saves tax at your marginal rate: the higher your top bracket, the more each dollar contributed is worth. Lower net income can also lift income-tested benefits. Each year's new room is 18% of prior-year earned income, capped at that year's dollar limit — $32,490 for 2025 and $33,810 for 2026 — then reduced by any pension adjustment; unused room carried forward from earlier years is added on top of that cap, so banked room can put your total well above the annual limit. You may contribute now and claim the deduction in a later, higher-income year.

HST applies only in Ontario at 13%, Nova Scotia at 14% since 1 April 2025, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island at 15%. Everywhere else the federal GST of 5% applies on its own or beside a separate provincial tax: British Columbia PST 7%, Saskatchewan 6%, Manitoba RST 7%, and Quebec QST 9.975% charged on the pre-GST price. Alberta and the three territories charge GST only.

The principal you repay is never deductible, so clearing the balance faster brings no tax saving of its own. Only the interest portion of payments on an eligible federal or provincial student loan counts, and it produces a non-refundable credit rather than a deduction. Ask your loan servicer for the annual interest statement, because a bank record of the payment does not show the split. Interest you cannot use this year carries forward.

File the return on time regardless. The late-filing penalty is charged for filing late, not for paying late, so filing protects you even when you can send nothing with it. Then contact the CRA to set up a payment arrangement based on what you can genuinely afford; interest continues to accrue, but collection action generally holds while you keep to the schedule. Form RC4288 asks for relief from penalties and interest where circumstances beyond your control caused the delay.
