Government Grant Financial Support: Our Analysis

SR&ED refunds reach 35% federally for CCPCs on the first $3 million of qualified expenditures, with provincial top-ups in most provinces. Because the fee is fixed and budget-friendly, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

What We Notice Preparing Government Grant Financial Support Files

A few notes from the files we actually work on, because government grant financial support is decided by details that never make it into a brochure.

One rule does more work than the rest combined, so it goes first. SR&ED eligibility turns on technological uncertainty and systematic investigation, not on novelty or commercial success. Routine engineering is excluded no matter how difficult it was.

There is a companion rule that changes how the first one plays out in practice: A CCPC can claim SR&ED at the enhanced 35% refundable rate on the first $6 million of qualified expenditures (tax years beginning after 15 December 2024; $3 million before), where a non-CCPC gets 15% non-refundable. A file is only as strong as what backs it up, which brings us to the next rule: Contemporaneous documentation is what carries a SR&ED claim through review. Project notes, test logs and version histories created during the work outweigh a narrative written a year later.

If the rules above feel like they might interact in your situation, that instinct is usually right. Sorting out how is the core of what a tax expert does on a government grant financial support engagement. Here is what to have on hand so the government grant financial support work starts moving on day one.

Our terms are the same for every engagement: a fixed fee agreed before work begins, a full review with you before filing, and payment only after the service is complete.

Government Grant Financial Support Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Government Grant Financial Support cost in Canada?

Government Grant Financial Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Government Grant Financial Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Government Grant Financial Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Government Grant Financial Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Government Grant Financial Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Government Grant Financial Support services?

Our government grant financial support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Government Grant Financial Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

Can I switch to your firm for government grant financial support partway through the year?

Contemporaneous documentation is what carries a SR&ED claim through review. Project notes, test logs and version histories created during the work outweigh a narrative written a year later. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

What happens during the first meeting about government grant financial support?

We get this one a lot, and the answer is more concrete than people expect. Provincial digital media, innovation and investment credits stack on top of the federal SR&ED claim, and they are frequently missed because they sit outside the T2 schedules. Bring your documents and we will show you where it lands in your numbers.

What Canadians Search About Government Grant Financial Support

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Canadian income tax is built up in layers. You total your income for the year, subtract the deductions you qualify for to arrive at taxable income, then apply the federal brackets and your province's brackets to that figure. Each bracket rate applies only to the income sitting inside it, so earning more never retaxes the dollars below. Non-refundable credits, starting with the basic personal amount, come off the tax afterwards. Look up the CRA bracket table for the tax year you are filing.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse carried on a business, the return itself is due 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest runs on unpaid amounts after the payment deadline, and a late-filed return with a balance owing also attracts a late-filing penalty. Filing on time keeps benefit and credit payments flowing.

Rent on your home is not deductible on a Canadian return. Two situations change that. Self-employed people, and employees who meet the work-space-in-the-home conditions, may claim the share of rent tied to the area used for work. Several provinces also run a property tax or rent based credit, applied for on the provincial schedule filed with your T1, where rent paid affects the amount. Keep receipts and your landlord's details either way.

CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened on 23 February 2026 and stays open until 29 January 2027. You can prepare a return before the service opens, but it cannot be transmitted, and slips such as T4s and T5s often arrive only in late February. Filing early makes sense if you expect a refund. If you expect a balance owing, you can still file early and pay by 30 April 2026.

As the rules stand for the 2025 tax year filed in 2026, the late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% of that balance for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months, so 17% at worst. It rises to 10% plus 2% per month for up to 20 months, a 50% maximum, but only where the CRA formally demanded the return and had already charged a late-filing penalty for any of the three preceding tax years. Interest compounds daily.

Most tax saving comes from a short list of levers: contributing to an RRSP or a spousal RRSP, holding investments inside a TFSA, FHSA or RESP so growth is sheltered, claiming every deduction and credit you actually qualify for, and splitting income where the rules allow, such as pension income splitting. Business owners add expense timing and salary versus dividend planning. Order matters, so decide before year end rather than at filing time.

Most enquiries are settled without a phone call in My Account, My Business Account or Represent a Client, where assessments, balances, slips and CRA mail all sit. When you need a person, use the enquiries line for your programme from the contact page on canada.ca, and have your social insurance or business number plus a figure from a recent return ready for identity checks. Written enquiries go to the tax centre named on your notice of assessment.

Most residential rentals produce property income, not business income: you collect rent, pay the bills and report the net amount. The rental becomes a business when you provide services well beyond heat, light, parking and laundry, such as meals, cleaning, security or daily turnover, or run enough units with enough activity that it looks like a trade. The distinction matters for capital cost allowance, CPP on the earnings, and how losses are treated.

The slip reporting employment insurance benefits is issued in February following the year you received them, ahead of the filing deadline. Look for it in your My Service Canada Account and in CRA My Account; a paper copy is mailed if you have not chosen electronic delivery. EI benefits are taxable, and the tax withheld at source is often less than the tax finally due, so expect a balance owing if you had other income that year.

No. Canada has no income tax exemption based on disability status. Relief comes through the disability tax credit, which reduces tax payable for someone with a severe and prolonged impairment once a medical practitioner certifies the impairment and the CRA approves the claim. Unused credit can often be transferred to a supporting spouse or parent, and approval also opens access to other programs. Check the CRA's disability tax credit pages for the current amounts and the certification steps.

Tips are taxable income. Controlled tips your employer distributes are already inside the employment income on your T4, so you do not add them again. Direct tips and cash tips customers hand you are not on a T4, and you report them yourself as other employment income on your T1. Keep a daily record of amounts received. Declared tips can also raise your CPP contributions and the benefits based on them, so the record matters.

The Canada child benefit is a monthly tax-free payment based on how many children are in your care, their ages, whether a child qualifies for the disability benefit, and your adjusted family net income. Amounts are recalculated every July from the previous year's returns, so you and your spouse or common-law partner must both file each year to keep payments flowing. Apply through birth registration or in CRA My Account, and use the CRA's online calculator to estimate the amount.
