The Language of Internal Controls Review Filing, Explained

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Internal Controls Review: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. A review engagement under CSRE 2400 delivers limited assurance at a fraction of audit cost — often exactly what a bank covenant requires. Because the fee is fixed and low-cost, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

Practitioner Notes on Internal Controls Review

No two internal controls review files are identical, but the rules that govern them are stable. A tax services provider who works with Internal Controls Review weekly keeps returning to the same anchors, and they are set out below.

The starting point is not a strategy but a constraint: Only an audit gives an opinion on whether the statements are free of material misstatement. A review provides limited assurance and a compilation provides none, and which one is needed is set by the user of the statements, not by whoever prepares them.

A related rule tends to get overlooked precisely because the first one draws all the attention: Under CSRS 4200 the practitioner has to consider whether the compiled information is misleading and cannot issue it where it is. An unusual revenue or inventory policy has to be described plainly in the basis-of-accounting note rather than left for the reader to infer. And on timing: A CCPC files its T2 within six months of year-end, with the balance due two months after (three where the small business deduction is claimed). The 9% federal small business rate applies to the first $500,000 of active business income. The filing and payment deadlines differ, and interest runs from the payment date. Filing on time while paying late still costs money.

What this means for you depends entirely on facts we have not seen yet — which is the honest answer, and the reason a tax services provider starts every internal controls review engagement with questions rather than conclusions. Think of this list as the raw material a tax services provider works from on internal controls review.

Every file we prepare is reviewed with you before anything is filed, the fee is fixed and agreed up front, and you pay only after the service is delivered. If internal controls review is on your list, the conversation costs nothing to start.

Common Questions Before Starting Internal Controls Review Work

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Internal Controls Review cost in Canada?

Internal Controls Review starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Internal Controls Review?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Internal Controls Review take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Internal Controls Review?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Internal Controls Review different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Internal Controls Review services?

Our internal controls review services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Internal Controls Review services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What does a tax professional actually check during internal controls review?

We get this one a lot, and the answer is more concrete than people expect. CSRS 4200 replaced the old Notice to Reader. Every compilation now carries a basis-of-accounting note, and it must state whether the statements are for a specific user with a specific purpose. Bring your documents and we will show you where it lands in your numbers.

What records should I gather before starting internal controls review?

The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, in a form that allows the return to be verified. Where records cannot support the return, the CRA is entitled to assess on its own estimate — and the burden of disproving that estimate falls on the taxpayer. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

People Also Ask About Internal Controls Review

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline moves to 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest starts the day after the payment deadline, and a late-filing penalty applies on top when a return with a balance owing is filed late. File on time even with nothing owing, because income-tested benefits are recalculated from the filed return.

A tax return is the annual filing that reports your income, deductions and credits to the CRA so the final tax for the year can be settled. Payers withhold tax during the year and the return reconciles that against what you actually owe, producing either a refund or a balance to pay. For 2025 returns filed in 2026, refunds usually arrive in about two weeks for an online return, while a paper return runs on a considerably longer standard because it is handled manually.

Yes. Most people file electronically through NETFILE using CRA-certified software, which submits the return directly and confirms receipt immediately. Filing online is also what makes a fast refund possible: for 2025 returns filed in 2026 the CRA service standard is about two weeks online, against a considerably longer standard for a paper return, and registering direct deposit removes the cheque step. CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened 23 February 2026 and closes 29 January 2027.

A non-refundable credit reduces the tax you owe to zero but no further, so any unused part is lost, carried forward, or transferred to a spouse or parent where the rule allows it. A refundable credit is paid to you even when no tax is owed, which is how benefit-style payments reach people with little or no income. Most personal credits on the federal return, including the basic personal amount, are non-refundable.

Call the enquiry line for your situation, listed by topic on the CRA contact pages at canada.ca, then follow the automated menu to the option for speaking with an agent. Have your social insurance number or business number, your latest return and a recent notice of assessment ready, because the agent must verify you before discussing anything. Waits peak around the filing deadline and early calls connect faster. The CRA runs no walk-in tax counters.

By the last day of February following the calendar year the pay relates to. The same date applies to giving employees their copy and to filing the T4 information return with the CRA, and filing late brings a penalty that scales with the number of slips. Filed slips usually appear in CRA My Account within a few weeks. If yours has not arrived, ask your employer first, then fall back on My Account or your own pay records.

Not alone. A municipal council sets the property tax rate when it votes the annual budget and levy, and the mayor holds one vote, though a few provinces give mayors added budget powers that council can still override. Your bill is the assessed value of the property multiplied by that rate, plus an education portion the province sets. Assessments come from a provincial assessment body, not from the mayor.

Tax is owing because the amounts withheld or paid by instalments during the year fell short of the tax your return calculates. Usual causes are a second job or pension where each payer withholds as if it were your only income, self-employment or gig income with nothing deducted at source, investment or rental profit, and CPP payable on self-employed earnings. Compare the tax deducted on your slips against the total tax on the return to find the gap.

The buyer pays land transfer tax, and the lawyer or notary collects it on closing and remits it when the transfer is registered. The tax and its rates vary by province, some cities add a municipal charge on top, and Alberta and Saskatchewan charge land title registration fees instead of a transfer tax. First-time buyer rebates exist in several provinces. Budget for it as a cash closing cost, since in most cases it cannot be rolled into the mortgage.

Tax evasion is a criminal offence, prosecuted separately from an ordinary reassessment. On conviction a court can impose a fine set as a share of the tax evaded and, in serious cases, imprisonment, and the tax, interest and civil penalties remain owing on top. The CRA can also apply a gross negligence penalty for a false statement without any prosecution. Correcting a past return before the CRA contacts you can reduce or avoid penalties through the Voluntary Disclosures Program.

A genuine CRA call can show as blocked, private or an unfamiliar number, so the display proves nothing either way. Judge the call by its content. The CRA will not demand payment by gift card, cryptocurrency or e-transfer, will not threaten immediate arrest or deportation, and will not ask for a passport or banking password. Hang up, then call an enquiry line published on canada.ca or check My Account for a real balance.

The principal you repay is never deductible, so clearing the balance faster brings no tax saving of its own. Only the interest portion of payments on an eligible federal or provincial student loan counts, and it produces a non-refundable credit rather than a deduction. Ask your loan servicer for the annual interest statement, because a bank record of the payment does not show the split. Interest you cannot use this year carries forward.
