Invoicing and Billing Support: Our Analysis

Compilation engagements now follow CSRS 4200, which sets out the basis-of-accounting note every lender expects to see attached to the statements. We quote invoicing and billing support as one affordable fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

Working Notes From Our Invoicing and Billing Support Files

Good invoicing and billing support work is mostly about sequencing: which questions to settle before which. These notes lay out the sequence an income tax specialist follows on Invoicing and Billing Support engagements.

The foundation is simple to state and easy to trip over: The CRA expects the trial balance behind a T2 to reconcile to the GIFI schedules filed with it. A statement set that does not tie to the return is the first thing a reviewer notices.

That rule rarely travels alone; alongside it sits another: Compilation engagements follow CSRS 4200, which requires a basis-of-accounting note describing exactly how the statements were prepared. Lenders read that note, and an omitted one is the fastest way to have a financing package sent back. Calendars matter more than most people expect in invoicing and billing support, and this is the rule that proves it: An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated.

Reading rules is one thing; knowing which of them your file actually triggers is another. A tax services provider closes that gap, and for invoicing and billing support the gap is often wider than it looks. Here is what to have on hand so the invoicing and billing support work starts moving on day one.

The fee is fixed and agreed before any work starts, you review every figure, and payment happens only after the work is done.

Case Study 2

$139,000 In Credits Claimed That Prior Filings Had Missed — Quarterly-Close Practice, Kitchener

4 Years Filed, $16,000 Removed From The Assessed Balance — Regional Courier Operator, Edmonton

Answers to Frequent Invoicing and Billing Support Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Invoicing and Billing Support cost in Canada?

Invoicing and Billing Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Invoicing and Billing Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Invoicing and Billing Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Invoicing and Billing Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Invoicing and Billing Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Invoicing and Billing Support services?

Our invoicing and billing support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Invoicing and Billing Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

Can I switch to your firm for invoicing and billing support partway through the year?

In our files, this is the deciding factor: The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, in a form that allows the return to be verified. Where records cannot support the return, the CRA is entitled to assess on its own estimate — and the burden of disproving that estimate falls on the taxpayer. A tax consultant applies it to your numbers before submission.

How long does invoicing and billing support usually take from start to finish?

The short answer comes straight from our working notes: A fiscal year-end cannot be changed by simply closing the books on a new date; subsection 249.1(7) requires the CRA’s concurrence. The short transitional period is a tax year in its own right and needs its own return and its own statements. How that plays out on your file depends on the specifics, which is exactly what the engagement is for.

Invoicing and Billing Support: The Questions People Search

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

File a T1 return for the year, sending it electronically with CRA-certified software or mailing a paper return. Gather your slips and receipts first and check them against the ones listed in My Account. For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline was 30 April 2026, or 15 June 2026 to file if you or your spouse were self-employed, with payment still due 30 April 2026. CRA online filing for 2025 returns closes 29 January 2027.

Canadian income tax is built up in layers. You total your income for the year, subtract the deductions you qualify for to arrive at taxable income, then apply the federal brackets and your province's brackets to that figure. Each bracket rate applies only to the income sitting inside it, so earning more never retaxes the dollars below. Non-refundable credits, starting with the basic personal amount, come off the tax afterwards. Look up the CRA bracket table for the tax year you are filing.

There is no fixed percentage. Your employer withholds federal income tax, where 2026 brackets start at 14%, plus provincial tax, CPP at 5.95% on earnings between the $3,500 exemption and the $74,600 ceiling, and EI at $1.63 per $100 of insurable earnings up to $68,900. Credits claimed on your TD1 reduce the income tax part. Higher earners also pay CPP2 at 4% on earnings between the ceiling and $85,000 for 2026.

Not on a Canadian personal return. Net income there is total income minus deductions such as RRSP contributions and union dues, worked out before any tax is applied, and it is the figure used to test income-tested benefits and credits. In everyday payroll language, net pay does mean what reaches your account after tax and other withholdings. For a corporation it depends on the statement: accounting net income is normally after tax, while the return starts from income before tax.

The CRA mails an income tax package to people who filed on paper the year before, usually in February. Anyone else can order one online or by phone, or download and print the forms. Filing online is faster: a refund on an electronically filed return usually arrives in about two weeks. Slips such as T4 and T5 come from your employer or financial institution, not from the CRA, though filed copies show in CRA My Account.

Payments for hosting a student are taxable where they exceed what you spend on that student's room, meals and utilities and the arrangement is run for profit. Where the fee only covers your costs, the CRA generally treats it as cost recovery with nothing to report and nothing to deduct. Keep a record of the fee and of what you spent, because the answer turns on those figures rather than on the label homestay.

Child care paid so you could work, run a business or study is generally deductible, and it normally has to be claimed by the lower-income spouse. Eligible costs include daycare, a nanny, day camps and some overnight camp or boarding school fees. The amount is capped per child by the child's age and by a share of earned income; the current limits are on the CRA's child care expenses page. Keep receipts showing the provider's name and, for an individual caregiver, their SIN.

Yes. Tips are income whether they come as cash, on a card, or out of a pooling arrangement, and they are reportable even when no slip shows them. Controlled tips that run through the employer appear on your T4 with tax, CPP and EI already withheld. Direct and pooled cash tips are not withheld on, so you add them to your return yourself and may owe a balance. Keep a daily log and set money aside.

From 1 October 2026, British Columbia applies 7% PST to several services that were previously untaxed: accounting and bookkeeping, architectural, engineering and geoscience, security and private investigation, and non-residential real estate services. Architectural, engineering and geoscience fees are taxed on 30% of the purchase price rather than the full amount. Providers not already collecting PST must register online, and can do so up to six months before their first taxable sale.

Canada has no gift tax, so moving money to a spouse is not a taxable event in itself. The catch is the attribution rules: income and capital gains earned on cash or property you gift to your spouse are generally taxed back to you rather than to them. Two routes sidestep that, giving your spouse money to contribute to their own TFSA, and a documented loan at the prescribed rate with the interest genuinely paid each year.

Property tax on the home you live in is not deductible. It becomes deductible only where the property earns income or supports a business: a landlord deducts it against rental income, and a self-employed person with a qualifying work space at home deducts the portion tied to that space, while a salaried employee working from home cannot claim property tax at all and only an employee paid by commission can. Tax on vacant investment land is often added to the land's cost instead. Keep the municipal bills.

Land transfer tax is a tax the buyer pays on closing when title changes hands, levied by most provinces — Alberta and Saskatchewan instead charge land title registration fees, and in Nova Scotia the deed transfer tax is set municipally. Where a province does levy it, the scale is usually graduated and applied to the purchase price, so a higher price attracts a higher effective rate. Some municipalities charge a second land transfer tax of their own, and several provinces, including Ontario and British Columbia, offer first-time buyer relief, as does the City of Toronto on its own municipal tax. Your lawyer collects and remits it at closing, so check your province's current schedule before you budget.
