Terms Worth Knowing Before Professional Tax Return

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Professional Tax Return: Our Analysis

T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed — though any balance owing still accrues interest from April 30. We quote professional tax return as one budget-friendly fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

Field Notes: Professional Tax Return

Every week brings another round of professional tax return work, and every week the same few issues account for most of the friction. Consider this a working accountant's short list for Professional Tax Return.

One rule does most of the work here. Moving expenses are deductible where the new home is at least 40 kilometres closer to the new work location, and the deduction is limited to income earned at the new location.

Pair that with the next rule and most of the confusion around professional tax return disappears: Capital losses can be carried back three years against capital gains already reported, which turns a bad year into a refund rather than a carry-forward. The documentation side matters just as much. Charitable donations can be carried forward for up to five years and claimed by either spouse, and the credit rate steps up above the first $200 of total gifts in a year. Small receipts claimed one year at a time sit in the low tier every time.

None of this is exotic — but each point has to be applied to your facts, which is exactly what you are paying a tax consultant to do. Here is what to have on hand so the professional tax return work starts moving on day one.

As with everything we file: fixed fee agreed first, your review before submission, payment after service.

What Clients Ask Us About Professional Tax Return

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Professional Tax Return cost in Canada?

Professional Tax Return starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Professional Tax Return?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Professional Tax Return take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Professional Tax Return?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Professional Tax Return different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Professional Tax Return services?

Our professional tax return services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Professional Tax Return services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What should I look for when choosing a provider for professional tax return?

Capital losses can be carried back three years against capital gains already reported, which turns a bad year into a refund rather than a carry-forward. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

How do I know if my business actually needs professional tax return?

The short answer comes straight from our working notes: Moving expenses are deductible where the new home is at least 40 kilometres closer to the new work location, and the deduction is limited to income earned at the new location. How that plays out on your file depends on the specifics, which is exactly what the engagement is for.

What Canadians Search About Professional Tax Return

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

A tax deduction is an amount subtracted from your income before tax is worked out, so it reduces the income being taxed rather than the tax bill directly. Its worth depends on your marginal rate: the higher the rate, the more the deduction saves. Common examples are RRSP contributions, child care costs, union dues, moving expenses and business expenses. Credits work the other way, reducing the tax calculated on that income.

For 2025 returns filed in 2026, most online returns are processed in about two weeks, and a non-resident return can take up to sixteen weeks. A paper return runs on a considerably longer standard because it is handled manually. Those timeframes assume a complete return that is not pulled for review. Register direct deposit and track progress in CRA My Account rather than waiting on a posted cheque.

Income up to the basic personal amount is effectively untaxed, because that credit offsets the federal tax on it, and each province and territory has its own equivalent amount. Both figures change every year with indexation, so look up the amount for the tax year in question. Other credits, such as the age amount, tuition, or the disability amount, lift the point where tax actually starts. Tax withheld at source below that point comes back as a refund.

The basic personal amount is a non-refundable credit that shelters a base level of income from federal tax, so income below it carries no federal tax. The amount is indexed every year, and the enhanced portion is phased out across the second-highest federal bracket, so taxpayers in the top bracket receive only the base amount. Each province and territory sets its own version. On Form TD1 you claim it so your employer withholds less; claim it with one employer only, or too little tax is withheld.

Often, yes. A first return has no filing history behind it, so the CRA may verify your identity, address and date of birth before assessing it, and setting up direct deposit for the first time adds a step. Once assessed, timing matches any other return: about two weeks for one filed online. Opening My Account and registering direct deposit before you file removes most of the delay.

A GST cheque is the GST/HST credit, a tax-free quarterly payment from the CRA that offsets sales tax for people with modest incomes. You do not apply for it: filing your T1 return is the application, and the CRA works out entitlement from your family net income, marital status and number of children. Payments arrive in July, October, January and April, by direct deposit or cheque. File every year even with no income, or the payments stop.

All of it, at your own marginal rate rather than a special tip rate. Tips are added to your other income, so the tax depends on the bracket that income falls into: federal rates for 2026 start at 14% and rise through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33%, with provincial tax on top. Controlled tips paid through payroll already have income tax, CPP and EI withheld; tips received directly you report yourself.

Not everyone owes income tax, though almost everyone touches the system. Income tax starts once taxable income passes your personal credits; the federal basic personal amount for 2026 is $16,452, tapering to $14,829 at higher net income. Filing still matters with nothing owing, because benefits and credits are calculated from the return. Sales tax, payroll contributions and fuel or tobacco taxes reach people who pay no income tax at all.

Zero-rated supplies are taxable at a rate of zero, so you charge no GST/HST but can still claim input tax credits on the costs of making them; basic groceries, prescription drugs and most exports sit here. Exempt supplies are outside the tax entirely: you charge nothing and cannot claim input tax credits on related costs, which covers most residential rent, many health services and financial services. The distinction decides whether the tax on your own purchases is recoverable.

Every province and territory sets its own income tax brackets, rates and credits, and they apply on top of the federal brackets to produce your combined marginal rate. Alberta uses fewer bands than British Columbia, for example, and most jurisdictions index their thresholds each year. Your province of residence on 31 December decides which table applies to the whole year, so look up that province's schedule for the year you are filing rather than a national figure.

A T4A reports amounts that are not employment income, such as pension or annuity payments, certain benefits and fees paid for services to someone who is not your employee. Payroll slips for a calendar year are due to the recipient and to CRA by the end of February following that year. Employment income belongs on a T4 instead, where controlled tips paid through the business are included; tips a customer hands directly to staff are not, but the employee still reports them.

Yes, when the trip is for business. Accommodation on a business trip is fully deductible, unlike business meals and entertainment, where the Act allows only a portion of what you spend, and it holds whether you are self-employed or a corporation reimbursing an employee. Keep the folio, note the business purpose and who you met, and separate out any personal days you added. A hotel near your ordinary workplace, or an event you attend for personal interest, does not qualify.
