American Moving to Canada Tax Planning: Our Analysis

The T1135 foreign income verification statement applies once specified foreign property passes $100,000 in cost — late-filing penalties start at $25 a day. We quote american moving to canada tax planning as one budget-friendly fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

Working Notes From Our American Moving to Canada Tax Planning Files

A few notes from the files we actually work on, because american moving to canada tax planning is decided by details that never make it into a brochure.

The foundation is simple to state and easy to trip over: Part XIII withholding of 25 percent applies to dividends, rents, royalties and certain interest paid to non-residents, reduced only by the rate the applicable treaty allows. The Canadian payer is liable for tax it failed to withhold, and the amounts are reported on an NR4 information return.

There is a companion rule that changes how the first one plays out in practice: The rate charged follows the customer's province, not the seller's: 13% into Ontario, 15% into New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI, 14% into Nova Scotia (since 1 April 2025), 5% plus provincial tax elsewhere. A seller charging its own province's rate nationally is under-collecting on some sales and over-collecting on others, and owes the difference on the under-collected ones. Then there is the matter of timing, which forgives very little: A CCPC files its T2 within six months of year-end, with the balance due two months after (three where the small business deduction is claimed). The 9% federal small business rate applies to the first $500,000 of active business income. The filing and payment deadlines differ, and interest runs from the payment date. Filing on time while paying late still costs money.

The practical upshot is simple: every one of these rules has a version that helps you and a version that costs you, and which one applies depends on choices made before filing. That is precisely the ground a tax professional covers. To move quickly, have your ledger exports, bank statements and prior filings ready when we start.

No surprises is the operating principle: the fee is agreed and fixed before we start, you review everything before it is filed, and payment comes after the work, not before.

Questions American Moving to Canada Tax Planning Clients Ask, With Our Answers

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does American Moving to Canada Tax Planning cost in Canada?

American Moving to Canada Tax Planning starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for American Moving to Canada Tax Planning?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does American Moving to Canada Tax Planning take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for American Moving to Canada Tax Planning?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes American Moving to Canada Tax Planning different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in American Moving to Canada Tax Planning services?

Our american moving to canada tax planning services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with American Moving to Canada Tax Planning services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What happens during the first meeting about american moving to canada tax planning?

A CCPC files its T2 within six months of year-end, with the balance due two months after (three where the small business deduction is claimed). The 9% federal small business rate applies to the first $500,000 of active business income. The filing and payment deadlines differ, and interest runs from the payment date. Filing on time while paying late still costs money. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

Can I switch to your firm for american moving to canada tax planning partway through the year?

We get this one a lot, and the answer is more concrete than people expect. The rate charged follows the customer's province, not the seller's: 13% into Ontario, 15% into New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI, 14% into Nova Scotia (since 1 April 2025), 5% plus provincial tax elsewhere. A seller charging its own province's rate nationally is under-collecting on some sales and over-collecting on others, and owes the difference on the under-collected ones. Bring your documents and we will show you where it lands in your numbers.

What Canadians Search About American Moving to Canada Tax Planning

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Sign in to CRA My Account, or use the CRA's mobile app, where the return shows as received, in process or assessed, and the refund amount and payment date appear once it has been assessed. The CRA also runs an automated telephone service giving the same information. A representative you have authorised through Represent a Client can check it for you. If the status has not moved past the published processing time, the return is probably under review.

Income tax is tax charged on the income you earn in a year, levied by both the federal government and your province or territory. Rates are graduated, so successive slices of taxable income are taxed at higher rates, and credits such as the basic personal amount reduce the tax calculated. Employment income is taxed through payroll withholding and settled on your T1 return. Quebec residents also file a separate provincial return with Revenu Quebec.

Most people file electronically with software the CRA approves for NETFILE, or have a preparer send the return through EFILE. Paper filing is still accepted and takes far longer to process. Before starting, set up My Account, confirm your direct deposit details, and download the slips the CRA already holds so your return matches its records. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026, with any balance owing due the same day; a 2025 return not yet filed is late, so file it now to stop the late-filing penalty growing.

A refund is the tax already paid minus the tax actually owed. Add the income tax withheld on your slips to any instalments you paid, work out tax payable on your total income after deductions and credits, and the difference comes back if the first figure is larger. Large refunds usually trace to over-withholding on employment income, RRSP contributions, or credits transferred to you. Run the numbers through the CRA's or a commercial estimator before you file.

Multiply the pre-tax price by the combined sales tax rate for the province where the sale takes place, then add that amount to the price. In HST provinces it is one rate; elsewhere GST and the provincial tax are applied separately, and in Quebec the QST is calculated on the price before GST rather than on a GST-included amount. Zero-rated and exempt items get nothing added. The place of supply decides the rate, not where your business is based.

The notice of assessment is issued once the CRA finishes assessing your return, usually about two weeks after an online filing, and up to 16 weeks for a non-resident return. The quickest way to get it is My Account, where current and prior-year notices can be viewed and downloaded. Paper copies go to the address on file unless you have chosen electronic mail only. If a notice never arrives, ask the CRA to reissue it.

Canada has no tax called VAT. The equivalent is GST at 5% for 2025 and 2026, combined with the provincial part as HST in Ontario at 13%, Nova Scotia at 14% since 1 April 2025, and New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island at 15%. Other provinces add a separate provincial sales tax or Quebec's QST. Foreign VAT you paid abroad cannot be recovered through a Canadian GST/HST return.

The RESP lifetime contribution limit is $50,000 per beneficiary, unchanged since 2007 and still the figure for 2026, and there is no annual limit. Contributions are not deductible. If total contributions for one child go over $50,000, each subscriber pays tax of 1% per month on their share of the excess for every month it stays in a plan, so track deposits across every plan for that child.

There is no minimum income that switches filing on. You must file if you owe tax, if the CRA asks you to, if you disposed of capital property, or if you have to repay benefits. Below the federal basic personal amount, $16,452 for 2026 and reduced at higher incomes, you generally owe no federal tax. Filing is still how you claim the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit and provincial credits, so file anyway.

A penalty plus interest. For the 2025 and 2026 tax years the late-filing penalty is 5% of the tax still unpaid at the due date, plus 1% of that unpaid tax for each complete month the return is late, to twelve months — up to 17%. Interest then runs on both the tax and the penalty. A repeated-failure penalty of 10% plus 2% a month to twenty months applies only where the CRA served a demand to file and a late-filing penalty was charged in one of the three preceding years.

Yes. Service Canada withholds federal and provincial tax from Employment Insurance payments, but the amount held back is often less than the tax finally owed, because the withholding takes no account of your other income for the year. Benefits are reported to you on a T4E slip and go on your T1 return. You can ask Service Canada to withhold more if you want to avoid a balance owing at filing time.

A treaty exemption is relief given by a tax treaty between Canada and another country so the same income is not taxed twice. Depending on the article relied on, it can remove Canadian tax entirely, cap a withholding rate, or give taxing rights to only one of the two countries. The relief is not automatic: you usually certify your residence to the payer or claim it on a Canadian return, and keep the supporting documents.
