Timmins: Our Analysis

Timmins is one of Canada's great gold camps: mine payrolls with bonuses and shift premiums, contractors billing the majors, and exploration juniors issuing flow-through shares — whose renounced expenses and Mineral Exploration Tax Credit land on local investors' returns. Households claim the Northern Ontario Energy Credit, and incorporated contractors keep about 12.2% combined tax under Ontario's 3.2% small business rate.

A Tax Consultant's Notes on Timmins

Think of this as the pre-meeting briefing we give new Timmins clients: the Ontario specifics a tax consultant wants sorted before anyone signs a return.

Before anything else, sales tax: Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. Every Timmins file we prepare starts from that reality.

Year-end planning in Ontario starts from an anchor. Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. A tax consultant uses it to work backwards: how much to bonus out, what to defer, and what the corporation should retain. It is the first thing we walk Timmins owners through.

Before a Timmins business runs its first pay cycle, we check the provincial levy position. Employer Health Tax (EHT) applies above a $1,000,000 annual payroll exemption for eligible employers. Knowing where you stand against it determines how the payroll accounts get set up.

Do any of Ontario Innovation Tax Credit, Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, Ontario Regional Opportunities Investment Tax Credit touch your business? The honest answer: it depends entirely on your circumstances. What we can say from the files we see is that Ontario owners far more often skip the question than receive a no. Every Timmins file we prepare starts from that reality.

Timmins's business mix runs through finance, professional services, manufacturing, technology and healthcare, and each of those sectors files differently. An accountant working locally learns those patterns quickly, because they arrive in the inbox every week.

Documents move on secure cloud software, the fee is the same across Canada, and payment follows your approval. For a Timmins business, that is the ground floor of the filing.

Timmins Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Timmins tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Growth Handled Without A Missed Filing, $108,000 Freed — Optometry Practice, Timmins

An optometry practice in Timmins, Ontario was scaling. The growth exposed 13% HST charged on every sale regardless of where the customer was located. The back office was rebuilt to match, freeing $108,000.

An optometry practice in Timmins, Ontario was opening in a second province. That meant different filing obligations and a different payroll regime. 13% HST charged on every sale regardless of where the customer was located already sat in the file. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 12.2% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. We then put monthly reporting in place. That let the owner see the cash effect of growth while there was still time to act on it. Growth was absorbed without a compliance failure. $108,000 of cash was released, and the monthly reporting now flags a problem while it is still small.

Case Study 2

Corporate Structure Rebuilt For $51,000 Of Annual Savings — Cybersecurity Firm, Timmins

The structure at a cybersecurity firm in Timmins, Ontario no longer fitted the business. Instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown showed it. Rebuilding it saves $51,000 a year.

The structure at a cybersecurity firm in Timmins, Ontario dated from years earlier. It had been set up for a business that no longer existed. Instalments still calculated on a year the business had long outgrown had become expensive. We rebuilt the sales ledger by customer location, applied the correct place-of-supply rate to each stream, and filed the adjusted HST returns. The reorganisation used the rollover provisions rather than a taxable transfer, so no tax fell due on the restructuring itself. $51,000 of annual saving, achieved on a tax-deferred basis. The minute book, elections and valuations are all in the file.

Case Study 3

$67,000 Saved By Correcting What Prior Filings Had Missed — Textile Manufacturer, Timmins

A second opinion for a textile manufacturer in Timmins, Ontario recovered $67,000 a year. It found sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before in prior filings.

A textile manufacturer in Timmins, Ontario asked for a second opinion on its ON tax and accounting file. That followed three years of rising tax. The review found sector-specific exposure the previous accountant had not seen before. We built the comparison first: current structure against two alternatives. Then we assessed and claimed Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit alongside the federal return. First-year saving of $67,000, with the same benefit recurring. Every position taken is documented and supported in the file.

Case Study 4

Collections Halted And $123,000 Cut From A 6-Year Backlog — Plastics Moulder, Timmins

Collections had begun against a plastics moulder in Timmins, Ontario over 6 years of unfiled returns. Bringing them current cut $123,000 from the balance.

By the time a plastics moulder in Timmins, Ontario called, 6 years were outstanding. The CRA had assessed on estimates. Underneath it sat a provincial payroll levy that had never been registered for or remitted. We reconstructed the records year by year. We assessed and claimed Ontario Innovation Tax Credit alongside the federal return. Each filing replaced an arbitrary assessment with a real one. The account is current. Filing on real numbers rather than CRA estimates reduced the balance by $123,000, and a relief application addressed part of the accumulated interest.

Case Study 5

Instalments Rebased, $140,000 Of Cash Returned To The Business — Marketing Agency, Timmins

A marketing agency in Timmins, Ontario was overpaying instalments. The cause was out-of-province sales billed at the ON rate instead of the customer’s. Rebasing them returned $140,000 to the business.

A marketing agency in Timmins, Ontario was paying instalments calculated on a prior year. That year no longer reflected the business. Out-of-province sales billed at the ON rate instead of the customer’s was tying up $140,000 of cash. We rebased the instalments on the current-year estimate rather than the prior-year default. Alongside that, we registered the provincial payroll account, caught up the outstanding remittances, and applied for relief on the penalty. $140,000 of cash stayed in the business, the penalty cycle ended, and the instalment position is reviewed each quarter against actual results.

Case Study 6

$575,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Benefits Consultancy, Timmins

A benefits consultancy in Timmins, Ontario was preparing to sell. However, passive assets sitting inside the operating company, disqualifying the shares disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $575,000 under the exemption.

A benefits consultancy in Timmins, Ontario had an offer on the table and 10 months to close. The shares did not qualify for the capital gains exemption. Passive assets sitting inside the operating company, disqualifying the shares was part of the reason. We purified the corporation so the shares met the qualifying tests. We recalculated the corporate tax at the 12.2% combined small business rate and rebased the instalments on the current year. All of it was done well ahead of the closing date. The sale closed on schedule with $575,000 sheltered by the lifetime capital gains exemption across the shareholders.

Your Timmins Tax Filing Questions, Answered

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Timmins cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Timmins businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Timmins accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Timmins complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Timmins businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Timmins?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Timmins, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Timmins?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What is the deadline for filing corporate taxes in Timmins?

In Timmins, corporate tax returns (T2) are due within six months of the corporation's fiscal year-end. If you owe tax, the balance must be paid within 2 or 3 months of the year-end.

How much do tax accountants in Timmins charge?

Our personal tax filing services in Timmins start from $25, and corporate tax returns start from $90, offered under our 100% Risk-Free price match guarantee.

Does your accounting firm handle CRA audits for clients in Timmins?

Yes! We provide direct CRA audit defense and representation services for businesses and individuals throughout Ontario and across Canada.

Do you have an office in Timmins?

We do not have a storefront in Timmins. Documents are exchanged on secure cloud software and everything is signed electronically, and the fee is the same in Timmins as anywhere else in Canada, with no location premium. Our head office is at 381 Front St W, Toronto, and you can reach the team on +1-416-619-0068.

What sales tax does a Timmins business charge?

Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. For a Timmins business, that is the ground floor of the filing.

What corporate tax rates apply to a Timmins corporation?

Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. We build every Timmins engagement around that fact.

More Timmins Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Your employer withholds federal and Ontario income tax using the pay period, your annual rate of pay and the claim codes from the TD1 forms you signed, then adds CPP contributions and EI premiums until the yearly maximums are reached. Because the tax portion follows brackets, the percentage held back rises as pay rises. For an exact figure, run your gross pay through the CRA's Payroll Deductions Online Calculator, which applies the current year's tables.

Medical costs give a non-refundable credit rather than a deduction. Eligible items include prescription drugs, dental work, eyeglasses and contact lenses, fees paid to medical practitioners authorised to practise, private health plan premiums, attendant care and travel for treatment unavailable locally. Over-the-counter products and most cosmetic procedures do not qualify. Only the portion above an income-based threshold counts, the claim period may end at any point in the tax year rather than following the calendar year, and pooling the family claim on one spouse usually helps.

There is no single income floor that triggers a return. Filing is required if you owe tax, if the CRA asks you to file, if you disposed of property, or if you have to repay a benefit. Filing with little or no income is usually still worth doing, because that return is how the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit and provincial benefits are calculated, and how RRSP room and unused credits get recorded for later years.

Up to $4,000 of provincial land transfer tax, the maximum since 1 January 2017. That cancels the tax completely on a home of roughly $368,000 and reduces it on anything dearer. You must be at least 18, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and have never owned a home anywhere in the world; your spouse or common-law partner must not have owned a home anywhere in the world at any time while you were spouses; and you must occupy the home within nine months.

No single legal definition exists. The CRA does not publish a low-income line; instead each benefit and credit has its own income test, and payments such as the GST/HST credit, the Canada workers benefit and the Ontario Trillium Benefit phase out as family net income rises. Statistics Canada's low-income measures vary by household size and community. File a return even on very little income, because those benefits are calculated from the return.

If you are incorporated, you can take salary, dividends, or a mix of both. Salary is deductible to the corporation, builds RRSP room and CPP entitlement, and requires payroll registration and regular remittances. Dividends need no payroll but come out of after-tax corporate income and create no RRSP room. Sole proprietors and partners simply draw money and pay tax on the business profit. The right mix depends on your cash needs and the corporation's tax position, so model both.

Ontario does not issue its own refund; the Canada Revenue Agency assesses your T1 and pays the combined federal and Ontario amount. A return filed online is usually processed in about two weeks, and a non-resident return can take up to 16 weeks. Filing for the 2025 tax year opened 23 February 2026. Register for direct deposit and watch My Account for the assessment, and note that amounts you owe the CRA or certain other agencies can be applied against a refund.

Yes, and it is usually worth doing. Filing with little or no income keeps benefits flowing, because the GST/HST credit, the Canada Child Benefit and provincial credits are all recalculated from a filed return. It also lets you carry forward tuition and other unused amounts. Report EI benefits, severance and any RRSP withdrawals: those slips are income even in a year you were not working. New RRSP room needs earned income.

File T5 slips and the related summary electronically through the CRA's internet file transfer or web forms service, reached from My Business Account, and give each recipient a copy of their own slip. The filing is due by the end of February for the previous calendar year. Web forms suits a handful of slips; internet file transfer suits an XML file exported from accounting software. Late slips draw a penalty that scales with slip count and lateness.

Most goods and services carry GST or HST: 5% GST, or 13% HST in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025. Basic groceries, prescription drugs and medical devices are zero-rated, so no tax applies but the seller still claims input credits. Rent, most health care and tuition are exempt. Provincial sales taxes add a second layer in some provinces.

The annual statement or receipt from your municipality shows the total billed and paid for the year. A municipal online tax account normally lists payments by year and by instalment, and where property tax is collected with your mortgage, the lender's year-end statement reports what was remitted. Municipal property records are usually searchable by address or roll number. Keep that figure if you are claiming a rental, business or workspace share, or a provincial property tax credit.

Different deductions, not different rules. Withholding follows the TD1 forms you filed, so a colleague claiming more credits, tuition or a disability amount has less tax taken off. Other causes are a different province of employment, a second job where each employer applies the basic personal amount, taxable benefits added to your pay, a higher salary reaching the next bracket, and pay-period timing. CPP and EI also stop at their annual maximums, which higher earners reach sooner.
