CRA Review Letter Response: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the notice of assessment, and individuals have a further year to apply for an extension. Our cra review letter response engagement is priced as a budget-friendly flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

What the Paperwork Teaches Us About CRA Review Letter Response

A few notes from the files we actually work on, because cra review letter response is decided by details that never make it into a brochure.

If you remember one thing from this page, make it this: Collections action can proceed while an objection is outstanding for GST/HST and payroll amounts. That is why a filed objection is not by itself protection against a bank freeze.

Layer a second constraint on top and the picture sharpens: Taxpayer relief applications can cancel penalties and interest arising from CRA delay, serious illness or a natural disaster. The CRA is limited to the ten prior calendar years. Then there is the matter of timing, which forgives very little: The normal reassessment period runs three years from the original notice of assessment for an individual or a CCPC and four years for other corporations. A waiver signed at an auditor’s request removes that limit for the issue it describes. It stays open until it is revoked.

What this means for you: the value in cra review letter response is not the filing itself, it is having a tax expert apply these rules to your numbers before anything is submitted. Every cra review letter response file rests on documentation, so start by collecting.

We keep the commercial side simple. The fee is fixed and agreed in advance, the file is reviewed with you before filing, and you pay after the service — in that order, every time.

Case Study 1

$26,500 Late-Filing Penalty Cancelled On Relief Application — Employer Under Payroll Review, Saskatoon

A company facing a payroll trust examination in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan had already been penalised. The issue was a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. A relief application cancelled $26,500 of that penalty.

A company facing a payroll trust examination in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan had already missed one deadline and was about to miss a second. Behind it sat a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. A penalty of $26,500 was accruing. We split the work into what had to happen before the deadline and what could follow it. Then we assembled the contemporaneous records, filed a structured response to each proposed adjustment with the supporting documents indexed, and had the proposal withdrawn. The outstanding return was accepted as filed, and the taxpayer relief application cancelled $26,500 of the penalty already assessed on the earlier year.

Case Study 2

$131,000 In Credits Claimed That Prior Filings Had Missed — Taxpayer Relief Applicant, Brampton

6 years of filings at a taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Brampton, Ontario had never claimed the incentives the work qualified for. The review recovered $131,000.

A taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Brampton, Ontario had been filing for 6 years. In that time, the incentives its activity qualified for were never claimed. Behind that sat an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. We tested each activity against the eligibility criteria rather than the description on the invoice. Then we requested the auditor’s working papers and report to see how the assessment had been built before answering any of it. $131,000 in credits claimed, with the open prior years adjusted as well. The claim passed review without adjustment.

Case Study 3

14 Months Reconciled And $12,500 Of Input Tax Recovered — Taxpayer Facing Collections, Red Deer

14 months of records at a taxpayer with frozen bank accounts in Red Deer, Alberta had never been reconciled. That left a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. Rebuilding recovered $12,500.

Nothing reconciled at a taxpayer with frozen bank accounts in Red Deer, Alberta. Every filing started with 14 months of cleanup. The file was carrying a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. We rebuilt from source rather than correcting on top of the existing file. We filed the Tax Court appeal inside the window and resolved the remaining adjustments before a hearing date was needed. Then we set the routine that keeps it clean. 14 months reconciled to the bank. The close now takes 4 days, and $12,500 of previously unclaimable input tax was recovered in the process.

Case Study 4

Intergenerational Transfer Completed With $320,000 Deferred — Restaurant Under Net-Worth Audit, Moncton

A family transfer at a restaurant under a net-worth audit in Moncton, New Brunswick would have been fully taxable. The reason was retained cash well above what the business needed to operate. Restructuring deferred $320,000.

A generational transfer at a restaurant under a net-worth audit in Moncton, New Brunswick had been discussed for years without a plan. Retained cash well above what the business needed to operate meant the transfer as contemplated would have been fully taxable. We kept the waiver narrowed to the issue actually under review and let the remaining years close on the normal reassessment period. We sequenced the steps so each one was complete and documented before the next depended on it. $320,000 of tax was deferred through the transfer, and the successor generation took over a corporation whose records stood up to review.

Case Study 5

$55,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Family Business Under Review, Guelph

A family business under a related-party review in Guelph, Ontario was profitable and permanently short of cash. Behind the gap sat an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $55,000.

A family business under a related-party review in Guelph, Ontario was profitable on paper and short of cash every month. An objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for explained most of the gap. We answered each query in writing with an indexed document package, so the file showed exactly what the auditor had received and on what date. We also built a thirteen-week cash view so tax payments stopped competing with payroll for the same dollars. $55,000 was released back into working capital. Remittances have been on time every period since, and the forecast shows the tax outflow before it lands.

Case Study 6

4 Years Filed, $80,000 Removed From The Assessed Balance — Contractor Facing Reassessment, Calgary

4 years of returns were outstanding at a contractor facing a proposed reassessment in Calgary, Alberta. That came on top of six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. Filing on real numbers removed $80,000 of assessed tax.

A contractor facing a proposed reassessment in Calgary, Alberta had not filed for 4 years. The CRA had issued arbitrary assessments. The business was carrying six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. That came on top of a growing interest balance. We started with the oldest year and worked forward so each year's closing balances fed the next. We filed the disclosure through the Voluntary Disclosures Program before contact, which removed the gross-negligence penalty entirely. We filed the years in sequence rather than all at once. Every year is now filed and assessed on actual figures. The notional assessments were vacated and $80,000 of the estimated balance came off, with a payment arrangement covering the rest.

Before You Call: CRA Review Letter Response FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Review Letter Response cost in Canada?

CRA Review Letter Response starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Review Letter Response?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Review Letter Response take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Review Letter Response?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Review Letter Response different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Review Letter Response services?

Our cra review letter response services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Review Letter Response services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

Is cra review letter response something I can catch up on if I have fallen behind?

In our files, this is the deciding factor: The normal reassessment period runs three years from the original notice of assessment for an individual or a CCPC and four years for other corporations. A waiver signed at an auditor’s request removes that limit for the issue it describes. It stays open until it is revoked. A tax practitioner applies it to your numbers before submission.

What information will you ask me for once the cra review letter response work is underway?

The honest answer comes down to one rule. Taxpayer relief applications can cancel penalties and interest arising from CRA delay, serious illness or a natural disaster. The CRA is limited to the ten prior calendar years. That is the part we verify before anything is filed.

What Canadians Search About CRA Review Letter Response

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Most people file electronically with software the CRA approves for NETFILE, or have a preparer send the return through EFILE. Paper filing is still accepted and takes far longer to process. Before starting, set up My Account, confirm your direct deposit details, and download the slips the CRA already holds so your return matches its records. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026, with any balance owing due the same day; a 2025 return not yet filed is late, so file it now to stop the late-filing penalty growing.

Not indefinitely. Property tax is collected by your municipality, which charges interest on arrears and can eventually register a tax arrears certificate and sell the property under provincial tax-sale rules. The permitted period of arrears is set by provincial legislation and varies, so ask your municipality for its schedule and payment options. Municipal arrears are separate from anything owing to the CRA, and paying one does not clear the other.

Yes. A prior-year return can be filed at any time, and electronic filing stays open for several past years, so a 2024 return usually still goes through software rather than on paper. If a balance is owing, the late-filing penalty has already run to its twelve-month maximum and interest is still accumulating daily, so there is nothing to gain from waiting. If you cannot pay in full, file anyway and then arrange payment, because the penalty is tied to filing rather than paying.

No. The CRA's agent-staffed phone lines run on set weekday hours, with extended hours during the personal filing season, and they close on public holidays; the exact times for each line are published on the CRA's Contact us page. Some automated telephone services, along with My Account, My Business Account and Represent a Client, are available around the clock, so you can check a balance, a benefit payment or a notice without speaking to anyone.

Two separate charges apply. Filing late costs 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of 12 months. Paying late costs compound daily interest on the unpaid balance at the CRA's prescribed rate, which is reset every quarter. Interest also runs on the penalty itself. Check the current quarterly rate on the CRA's prescribed interest rates page before estimating what you owe.

Pay through your bank's online bill payment, CRA My Payment, pre-authorised debit set up in My Account, a credit card through a third-party provider, or at a Canadian financial institution with a remittance voucher. Interest runs daily on an unpaid balance from the due date, so pay what you can even if you cannot clear it all. If you cannot pay in full, call the CRA to arrange a payment plan; penalty and interest relief is requested on form RC4288.

A refund only arises when the tax withheld and instalments you paid exceed the tax you actually owe. If your employer withheld close to the right amount, or you have self-employment, investment or gig income with nothing withheld, there is nothing to give back. Non-refundable credits cut tax to zero but never below it. Compare the tax deducted on your slips with the total payable on your notice of assessment.

It is the mailing address the CRA holds for you, the one shown on your return and used for notices of assessment, benefit letters and cheques. Keep it current: mail sent to an old address still counts as delivered, and benefit payments can be held up when the CRA cannot reach you. Update it in My Account, by phone, or on your next return. A business address is tracked separately from a personal one.

Start with the notice that created the balance. If a slip or claim was simply missed, request a change to the return online in CRA My Account or on a T1-ADJ, which is quicker than a formal dispute. To challenge the CRA's position, file a notice of objection by the deadline shown on your notice of assessment, with reasons and documents. Relief from penalties and interest is a separate request on form RC4288. Interest keeps running, so arrange payment meanwhile.

GST/HST applies to wholesale sales the same as retail, since Canada has no resale exemption certificate. A registered buyer charges tax on its own sales and recovers the tax it paid on inventory as an input tax credit, so the tax washes out through the chain and only the final consumer bears it. Provincial sales tax works differently: in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, goods bought for resale are generally exempt if you give the vendor your registration number.

Double taxation is lawful, and relief comes through credits and treaties rather than exemption. A Canadian resident taxed abroad on foreign income normally claims a foreign tax credit, while Canada's tax treaties cap withholding and decide which country taxes first. Inside Canada, corporate profits paid out as dividends carry a gross-up and dividend tax credit so the combined burden approximates a single level of tax. US LLCs are a common trap, since Canada usually treats one as a corporation.

There is no single percentage. Federal and provincial income tax both apply in graduated brackets to your taxable income, so each extra dollar is taxed at your marginal rate while your overall effective rate stays lower than that. Your pay stub also shows CPP and EI, which are contributions rather than income tax. For your own number, divide total tax on your notice of assessment by your total income.
