CRA Payment Arrangement: Our Analysis

A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the notice of assessment, and individuals have a further year to apply for an extension. Our cra payment arrangement engagement is priced as a affordable flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

From the Desk of Your Accountant

Every week brings another round of cra payment arrangement work, and every week the same few issues account for most of the friction. Consider this a working accountant's short list for CRA Payment Arrangement.

Everything in cra payment arrangement hangs off a single anchor. The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest. That relief is available only while the CRA has not yet contacted the taxpayer about the issue.

Pair that with the next rule and most of the confusion around cra payment arrangement disappears: A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the date of the notice of assessment. Individuals can instead object up to one year after the filing due date if that is later; corporations have only the 90 days. Any taxpayer who misses the deadline can apply for an extension within the following year. One more, because it surfaces in reviews constantly: The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay.

The practical upshot is simple: every one of these rules has a version that helps you and a version that costs you, and which one applies depends on choices made before filing. That is precisely the ground an accountant covers. To keep the engagement efficient, assemble these records before we begin.

The fee is fixed and agreed before any work starts, you review every figure, and payment happens only after the work is done.

Case Study 1

Second-Province Expansion Handled, $132,000 Of Cash Released — Restaurant Under Net-Worth Audit, Surrey

A restaurant under a net-worth audit in Surrey, British Columbia expanded into a second province. The file already carried an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. Every obligation was set up in advance and $132,000 of cash released.

Revenue at a restaurant under a net-worth audit in Surrey, British Columbia was up sharply and cash was tighter than ever. Underneath it sat an audit conducted over the phone, with nothing on file showing what had been provided or when. We filed the Tax Court appeal inside the window and resolved the remaining adjustments before a hearing date was needed. Every new obligation was set up before it was triggered, not after. That covered registration, remittance frequency and provincial filing. $132,000 of cash was released from the working capital cycle. The expansion completed with every registration and filing obligation covered from day one.

Case Study 2

$88,000 In Credits Claimed That Prior Filings Had Missed — Taxpayer Facing Collections, Burnaby

6 years of filings at a taxpayer with frozen bank accounts in Burnaby, British Columbia had never claimed the incentives the work qualified for. The review recovered $88,000.

A taxpayer with frozen bank accounts in Burnaby, British Columbia had been filing for 6 years. In that time, the incentives its activity qualified for were never claimed. Behind that sat a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. We tested each activity against the eligibility criteria rather than the description on the invoice. Then we requested the auditor’s working papers and report to see how the assessment had been built before answering any of it. $88,000 in credits claimed, with the open prior years adjusted as well. The claim passed review without adjustment.

Case Study 3

$13,000 Of Arbitrary Assessments Vacated After 6 Years — Contractor Facing Reassessment, Red Deer

The CRA had assessed a contractor facing a proposed reassessment in Red Deer, Alberta on estimates across 6 unfiled years. Real filings vacated $13,000 of that tax.

6 years of unfiled returns had turned into notional assessments at a contractor facing a proposed reassessment in Red Deer, Alberta. Underneath lay a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. Collections had already started. We assembled the contemporaneous records, filed a structured response to each proposed adjustment with the supporting documents indexed, and had the proposal withdrawn. We then filed every outstanding year in chronological order so the CRA could vacate the notional assessments cleanly. All 6 years were accepted as filed. $13,000 of arbitrarily assessed tax was vacated, collections action stopped, and the account is current for the first time in 6 years.

Case Study 4

Desk-Review Assessment Of $78,000 Vacated — Family Business Under Review, Barrie

A desk review assessed a family business under a related-party review in Barrie, Ontario $78,000. The dispute was over a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. Producing the records vacated the assessment.

A family business under a related-party review in Barrie, Ontario was carrying $78,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. Much of that amount accumulated during a period the CRA itself had delayed. We brought every outstanding return current, then negotiated a payment arrangement that stopped the collections action. We framed the relief application on the specific grounds the CRA guidelines recognise rather than on general hardship. The assessment was vacated. $78,000 came off the account, and the documentation now on file makes the same position straightforward to defend next time.

Case Study 5

Books Rebuilt From Source, $19,000 In Unclaimed Input Tax Found — Long-Term Non-Filer, Toronto

The ledger at a taxpayer with eight years of unfiled returns in Toronto, Ontario could not support its own filings. The reason was a confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed. Rebuilding it surfaced $19,000 in unclaimed input tax.

A taxpayer with eight years of unfiled returns in Toronto, Ontario could not answer basic questions about its own numbers. A confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed sat between the bank statements and the ledger. We traced each unexplained deposit to its source — loans, transfers between accounts, an insurance settlement — and reduced the net-worth assessment accordingly. We then documented the process so the work does not depend on any one person remembering how it was done. Records rebuilt and reconciled, $19,000 recovered in input tax credits that the old file could not support, and a documented monthly process now in place.

Case Study 6

$36,500 Cut From The Annual Tax Bill — Importer Under Audit, Edmonton

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Edmonton, Alberta was filing correctly and still overpaying. The reason was a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. Restructuring the position cut $36,500 from the annual bill.

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Edmonton, Alberta was compliant but paying more than it needed to. The prior year had been filed correctly. It still left a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date on the table. We modelled the current position against the alternatives before changing anything. Then we filed the disclosure through the Voluntary Disclosures Program before contact, which removed the gross-negligence penalty entirely. The change saved $36,500 in the first year and repeats annually. Nothing about the filings became more aggressive. The position is simply the one the rules already allowed.

CRA Payment Arrangement: Straight Answers to Common Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Payment Arrangement cost in Canada?

CRA Payment Arrangement starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Payment Arrangement?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Payment Arrangement take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Payment Arrangement?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Payment Arrangement different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Payment Arrangement services?

Our cra payment arrangement services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Payment Arrangement services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What happens during the first meeting about cra payment arrangement?

There is a widespread assumption here, and the actual position is worth stating plainly. The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay. If your current setup was built on the assumption instead of the rule, that is fixable — but sooner is better than later.

How do you price cra payment arrangement for a small business?

A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the date of the notice of assessment. Individuals can instead object up to one year after the filing due date if that is later; corporations have only the 90 days. Any taxpayer who misses the deadline can apply for an extension within the following year. We flag this early with every client it touches, because finding it out at filing time leaves you far fewer options than finding it out now.

Commonly Searched CRA Payment Arrangement Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

There is no single tax-free amount that applies to everyone. Federal and provincial basic personal amounts each shelter a band of income, so someone whose income stays within those amounts pays no income tax. The federal amount is reduced for higher earners, and every province sets its own figure that changes each year. Look up the basic personal amount for your province and tax year, and remember CPP and EI still come off employment income.

No. If you cannot pay the full balance, file on time anyway and then ask the CRA for a payment arrangement - instalments over a period you can manage, set up in My Account or by phone. Interest keeps accruing on the unpaid amount, but filing on time avoids the separate late-filing penalty. If your income is largely untaxed at source, the CRA may also ask you to pay next year's tax by quarterly instalments.

Not on a Canadian personal return. Net income there is total income minus deductions such as RRSP contributions and union dues, worked out before any tax is applied, and it is the figure used to test income-tested benefits and credits. In everyday payroll language, net pay does mean what reaches your account after tax and other withholdings. For a corporation it depends on the statement: accounting net income is normally after tax, while the return starts from income before tax.

Revenue Canada is the former name of the Canada Revenue Agency. The CRA is the federal body that administers income tax, GST/HST, payroll deductions and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit, and it collects provincial income tax for every province except Quebec, which runs its own personal system through Revenu Québec. The old name is still in everyday use, so paying Revenue Canada means paying the CRA, and a letter from either is the same agency.

The CRA publishes its numbers on the Contact the Canada Revenue Agency page, with separate lines for individual enquiries, business enquiries and benefits. We do not quote them here because they change and vary by service. Have your social insurance number or business number, a recent return and your postal code ready, since the agent will verify your identity before discussing your account. Automated self-service handles balances, and My Account answers many questions without a call.

The CRA does not usually move a due date, but you can ask for a payment arrangement that spreads the balance over time. Interest keeps running while you pay. Apply through My Account, My Business Account, or the CRA's debt management call centre. Where interest or penalties arose from circumstances beyond your control, ask for relief using form RC4288. British Columbia's property tax deferment program is a separate provincial scheme with its own application.

Yes. GST/HST you charge customers is collected on the government's behalf, so it sits as a liability until you remit it. Input tax credits on your purchases reduce that balance, and the net amount is what the GST/HST return reports. Record the tax in its own account at the point of sale; treating collected tax as revenue overstates sales and hides what you owe. Reconcile the account every filing period against the return.

It means the sales tax that applies where the sale takes place. Federal GST is 5%. In Ontario the HST is 13%; in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island it is 15%; Nova Scotia is 14% from 1 April 2025. British Columbia adds 7% PST and Saskatchewan 6% on top of GST, Manitoba adds 7% RST, and Quebec charges 9.975% QST on the pre-GST price for 14.975% combined. Alberta and the territories have GST only.

Canada runs a self-assessment system: you report your own income, deductions and credits, and the CRA checks the return afterwards. The agency receives your slips but not your rent, medical costs, childcare, donations, tuition or business expenses, so a return prepared for you from slips alone would miss deductions. The CRA does help part way, filling slip data into approved tax software automatically and inviting some filers with simple, lower-income situations to file by phone or online.

Adjusted family net income is your net income plus your spouse's or common-law partner's net income, minus any universal child care benefit and registered disability savings plan income received, plus any of those amounts repaid. CRA uses the figure to test income-based benefits such as the Canada child benefit, the GST/HST credit and the Canada workers benefit. It is taken from the previous year's returns, which is why both partners have to file each year to keep payments flowing.

Sometimes, as a credit rather than a deduction. Examination fees paid to a professional body can qualify for the tuition tax credit when the exam is required to obtain a professional status or licence recognised by statute, and the fee is above the CRA minimum. Study materials, travel and annual membership dues do not count. You need a receipt or official tax slip from the body. Check the CRA page on examination fees for licensing or certification.

Tax free means no tax is payable on the amount at all, as with growth inside a TFSA, most gifts and inheritances, lottery winnings and certain non-taxable employee benefits. It differs from tax-deferred, where an RRSP only postpones tax until withdrawal. In sales tax it means something narrower again: zero-rated supplies are taxed at nil while exempt supplies sit outside GST/HST, which decides whether the seller can recover tax paid on costs.
