Immigrant Tax Return: Our Analysis

CRA interest on unpaid balances compounds daily at the prescribed rate plus 4%, which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay yet. Because the fee is fixed and pocket-friendly, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

Practitioner Notes on Immigrant Tax Return

Most of what goes wrong with immigrant tax return goes wrong before anyone opens the software. As a tax specialist, that is where these notes on Immigrant Tax Return begin.

Start with the rule that decides most files: A payment to a non-resident for services performed in Canada is subject to 15 percent withholding under Regulation 105 whether or not the non-resident ends up owing Canadian tax. A waiver has to be applied for before the payment is made, and the payer that withheld nothing is the one assessed.

From there, the file turns on a second question, and the rule behind it reads as follows. Part XIII withholding of 25 percent applies to dividends, rents, royalties and certain interest paid to non-residents, reduced only by the rate the applicable treaty allows. The Canadian payer is liable for tax it failed to withhold, and the amounts are reported on an NR4 information return. A file is only as strong as what backs it up, which brings us to the next rule: The rate charged follows the customer's province, not the seller's: 13% into Ontario, 15% into New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI, 14% into Nova Scotia (since 1 April 2025), 5% plus provincial tax elsewhere. A seller charging its own province's rate nationally is under-collecting on some sales and over-collecting on others, and owes the difference on the under-collected ones.

The common thread in these rules is that they punish assumptions and reward verification. Engaging a tax specialist for immigrant tax return is, at bottom, a way of replacing assumptions with checked answers. Gather whatever records touch the numbers — statements, ledgers, prior-year filings — and we take it from there.

When you are ready, the process is straightforward — we agree a fixed fee up front, prepare the work, walk you through it before filing, and you pay once the service is delivered.

Common Questions About Immigrant Tax Return

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Immigrant Tax Return cost in Canada?

Immigrant Tax Return starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Immigrant Tax Return?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Immigrant Tax Return take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Immigrant Tax Return?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Immigrant Tax Return different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Immigrant Tax Return services?

Our immigrant tax return services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Immigrant Tax Return services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What records do I need before starting immigrant tax return?

We get this one a lot, and the answer is more concrete than people expect. The rate charged follows the customer's province, not the seller's: 13% into Ontario, 15% into New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI, 14% into Nova Scotia (since 1 April 2025), 5% plus provincial tax elsewhere. A seller charging its own province's rate nationally is under-collecting on some sales and over-collecting on others, and owes the difference on the under-collected ones. Bring your documents and we will show you where it lands in your numbers.

How long does immigrant tax return usually take from start to finish?

A CCPC files its T2 within six months of year-end, with the balance due two months after (three where the small business deduction is claimed). The 9% federal small business rate applies to the first $500,000 of active business income. The filing and payment deadlines differ, and interest runs from the payment date. Filing on time while paying late still costs money. That is the part most owners have not heard before they sit down with us, and it usually changes what they do next.

More Immigrant Tax Return Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline moves to 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest starts the day after the payment deadline, and a late-filing penalty applies on top when a return with a balance owing is filed late. File on time even with nothing owing, because income-tested benefits are recalculated from the filed return.

Work out the tax you actually owe for the year, then compare it with what has already been paid. Total your income, subtract deductions to reach taxable income, apply the federal and provincial brackets, take off your credits, and set the result against the tax withheld on your T4 and other slips plus any instalments. If more was withheld than you owe, the difference is your refund. Tax software approved for NETFILE runs the same arithmetic once your slips are entered.

An exemption trust is an American estate planning structure that preserves a deceased spouse's federal estate tax exemption, so there is no direct Canadian equivalent. Canada levies no estate or inheritance tax. Instead, capital property is treated as sold at fair market value on death and the resulting gains are reported on the final return, while a qualifying transfer or spousal trust can defer that tax until the surviving spouse dies. Families with United States ties need advice on both systems.

Call the CRA's individual or business enquiries line, both listed on the Contact the CRA page at canada.ca. Have your social insurance number or business number, your date of birth, and a line amount from a recent return ready, because the agent verifies you before discussing anything. Lines are quietest early in the morning and outside filing season. You can also authorise someone to call on your behalf using form AUT-01.

Most are. CPP, Old Age Security, employer pensions, annuity and RRIF payments and RRSP withdrawals all go into income at your marginal rate. TFSA withdrawals are not taxable and do not affect benefits. OAS is clawed back once net income passes a threshold set each year, so check the current figure on the CRA site. Pension income splitting with a spouse and the pension income credit can cut the total, and tax can be withheld at source.

Yes. Cash tips are taxable income even when no employer records them and no slip is issued, and they are reported as other employment income on your T1 for the year received. Keep a simple daily log, because the CRA can estimate tips from sales, hours and industry patterns if it reviews your return. Reporting tips also builds CPP contributions, which raises the pension you eventually collect.

Zero-rated. Goods and services exported from Canada are taxable at 0%, meaning you charge the customer no tax yet still claim input tax credits on what you bought to make the sale. Exempt supplies work differently: no tax charged and no credits either. The distinction drives cash flow, since a mainly export business often files for refunds rather than remittances. Keep evidence that the goods left Canada or that the customer is non-resident.

The notice of assessment is issued the moment the CRA finishes assessing your return, so its timing tracks the assessment: about two weeks for a 2025 personal return filed online, up to sixteen weeks for a non-resident return, and a considerably longer standard on paper. It appears in CRA My Account first, ahead of any paper copy. Turn on email notifications so you know when it lands, and read it against what you filed.

Land valuation is the assessed value that a provincial or municipal assessment body assigns to a property, normally based on what it would have sold for on a set valuation date. Your municipality multiplies that assessment by its own tax rate to produce the property tax bill, so the valuation drives the bill rather than being a tax itself. Assessments can usually be appealed within a fixed window. Assessed value is not the cost figure used to work out a capital gain on sale.

All of it. Tips are fully taxable, so there is no percentage a server is allowed to declare instead of the full amount, whether it arrived by card, in cash, or through a tip pool. There is no special rate either: tips are added to your other income and taxed at your marginal rate. Controlled tips paid out by the employer appear on your T4; direct and pooled tips usually do not, so keep a daily record.

Taxable income covers employment income and taxable benefits, self-employment and side income, tips, pensions and registered plan withdrawals, EI and most government support payments, interest, dividends, the taxable part of capital gains, rental profit, and foreign income earned while resident here. Residents report worldwide income, and the absence of a slip does not make an amount exempt. Taxable income is what remains after the deductions you qualify for, and the rates apply to that figure.

Employment income is taxed at source, so the levers are deductions and credits rather than avoidance. RRSP contributions reduce taxable income, and Form T1213 asks the CRA to lower the tax withheld from your pay for deductions you know you will claim. The CRA publishes no processing standard for it, so allow several weeks and send the request in the autumn before the year it applies to; a letter of authority covers one tax year only. Union dues, professional fees, child care and employer-approved employment expenses also help.
