What a Tax Preparation Specialist Checks First in Thunder Bay

If you run a business in Thunder Bay, your filings answer to both the federal rules and Ontario's own. The notes below walk through the provincial half — the part owners most often learn about the hard way.

The very first line item we confirm for any Thunder Bay client: Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. Everything downstream — invoicing, bookkeeping, the year-end file — inherits that setup.

The question is never just what the corporation owes — it is what the corporation should do before year-end so the answer is sensible. Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. That is the constraint a tax preparation specialist plans around for Thunder Bay companies.

Before a Thunder Bay business runs its first pay cycle, we check the provincial levy position. Employer Health Tax (EHT) applies above a $1,000,000 annual payroll exemption for eligible employers. Knowing where you stand against it determines how the payroll accounts get set up.

Ask your tax preparation specialist to walk the provincial program list against your year. Programs such as Ontario Innovation Tax Credit, Ontario Made Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit, Ontario Regional Opportunities Investment Tax Credit exist precisely for activities many Ontario businesses already do; the only way to know whether yours qualify is to check. Most Thunder Bay owners meet this rule for the first time at their first year-end with us.

Because Thunder Bay’s economy leans toward finance, professional services, manufacturing, technology and healthcare, those are the engagements we prepare most for local clients.

The thing your postal code will never change is our price. We serve all of Canada at the same fixed fee — no location premium — and payment only happens after you have reviewed the finished work. For a Thunder Bay business, that is the ground floor of the filing.

Corporate tax and accounting in Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay sits at the head of Lake Superior, and its economy blends forestry, the grain terminals and port, healthcare and a growing education and research sector. As a Northern Ontario hub, its businesses face a distinct mix of tax issues.

Forestry and processing corporations carry significant equipment and often qualify for manufacturing-and-processing capital cost allowance, where class and timing drive the deduction. Businesses moving goods through the port deal with freight, fuel and sometimes cross-border considerations. Healthcare and professional corporations, meanwhile, need the passive-income and salary-dividend planning common to incorporated practitioners.

Ontario administers the T2 federally, so there is no separate provincial return, but EHT and WSIB apply, and Northern Ontario firms should review regional program eligibility. We bring the CCA schedule, payroll and any professional-corporation planning into one filing.

Common Questions About Thunder Bay Tax Filing

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does a tax accountant in Thunder Bay cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and monthly bookkeeping at $10, the same fixed rates we charge nationally. Thunder Bay businesses pay no location premium, and the quote is agreed before work starts. See the full pricing breakdown.

Do I need to meet my Thunder Bay accountant in person?

No. Everything runs through a secure portal with e-signatures, so documents never travel by mail and nothing is lost in transit. Clients across Thunder Bay complete an entire filing without a single in-person meeting, though calls are always available.

Which tax deadlines apply to Thunder Bay businesses?

Corporate T2 returns are due six months after your fiscal year-end, with any balance owing payable within two or three months depending on your CCPC status. Personal T1 returns are due April 30, and June 15 for the self-employed. GST/HST depends on your filing frequency.

Can you handle both my corporate and personal returns?

Yes, and doing both together is where most of the planning value sits. Salary-versus-dividend mix, shareholder loans and RRSP room interact across the two returns, and treating them separately is how owners overpay. Explore all our services.

What if my books are behind by several years?

That is routine work for us. We rebuild the ledger year by year, file the outstanding returns in sequence, and where eligible apply to the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties and interest.

Are you taking on new clients in Thunder Bay?

Yes, we are actively taking on new corporate and personal clients in Thunder Bay, including mid-season transfers from another accountant. Transferring is straightforward and we request the prior files on your behalf.

What industries do you serve in Thunder Bay?

Construction, healthcare and medical practices, restaurants, e-commerce, real estate, transportation, professional services, technology startups and registered non-profits. Each carries a distinct deduction profile. See our industry specialisms.

How do I switch to your firm from my current accountant?

Tell us who currently holds your files and we handle the professional handover, including requesting working papers and prior-year returns. There is no gap in your compliance and no awkward conversation required on your side.

What services do you offer for cross-border tax issues?

We offer comprehensive solutions for cross-border tax issues, including tax planning, compliance, and advisory services for both Canadian and U.S. tax systems.

How can I benefit from your tax services in Thunder Bay?

Our services help you navigate complex tax regulations, ensuring compliance and maximizing your tax benefits, particularly in cross-border situations.

Do you offer services for international students in Canada?

Yes, we provide tax filing services for international students, helping them understand their tax obligations and claim eligible refunds.

What sales tax does a Thunder Bay business charge?

Ontario uses a single 13% HST administered by the CRA, so you file one combined return rather than separate federal and provincial ones. It is the first thing we walk Thunder Bay owners through.

What corporate tax rates apply to a Thunder Bay corporation?

Ontario applies a 3.2% small business rate on the first $500,000 of active business income, giving a 12.2% combined federal-provincial rate. Every Thunder Bay file we prepare starts from that reality.

More Thunder Bay Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Your employer withholds federal and Ontario income tax using the pay period, your annual rate of pay and the claim codes from the TD1 forms you signed, then adds CPP contributions and EI premiums until the yearly maximums are reached. Because the tax portion follows brackets, the percentage held back rises as pay rises. For an exact figure, run your gross pay through the CRA's Payroll Deductions Online Calculator, which applies the current year's tables.

Non-taxable income is money you receive that never enters taxable income. Common examples are lottery and most gambling winnings, gifts and inheritances, growth and withdrawals inside a TFSA, the GST/HST credit and Canada child benefit, most life insurance death benefits, and child support under current-rule agreements. A few amounts are reported and then deducted, such as workers' compensation and social assistance, because they still affect benefit calculations, so report anything that arrives on a slip even when no tax results.

Two different categories carry no tax. Zero-rated supplies are taxed at nil, including basic groceries, prescription drugs, medical devices and most agricultural products, and the seller can still claim input tax credits. Exempt supplies, such as most residential rent, health and dental care and financial services, carry no tax and no input tax credits. Small suppliers below the $30,000 threshold, unchanged for 2025 and 2026, also charge nothing until they register. The CRA lists both categories.

Rent from an Ontario property is taxed the same way as anywhere else in Canada: you report gross rent, deduct allowable expenses, and pay tax on the net amount at your combined federal and Ontario rates. Residential rent charged to a tenant carries no HST, though commercial rent generally does at 13%. Ontario landlords also cannot deduct the cost of the building itself, only capital cost allowance, which can affect a later sale.

Withhold three things from each pay: income tax, CPP and EI. For 2026, CPP is 5.95% from the employee and 5.95% from the employer on pensionable earnings between the $3,500 basic exemption and the $74,600 ceiling, plus CPP2 at 4% up to $85,000. EI is $1.63 per $100 of insurable earnings for the employee, and the employer pays 1.4 times that. Use the CRA payroll deductions online calculator, then remit by your assigned due date.

If you are incorporated, you can take salary, dividends, or a mix of both. Salary is deductible to the corporation, builds RRSP room and CPP entitlement, and requires payroll registration and regular remittances. Dividends need no payroll but come out of after-tax corporate income and create no RRSP room. Sole proprietors and partners simply draw money and pay tax on the business profit. The right mix depends on your cash needs and the corporation's tax position, so model both.

Not automatically. Property tax is set by your municipality on assessed value and does not fall because of your age. Relief programs do exist: British Columbia lets qualifying owners defer tax until the home is sold, Ontario municipalities may grant deferrals or cancellations for low-income seniors, and several provinces run rebates or grants. You apply, usually every year, and nothing happens on its own. Income-tested credits on your T1 return may also change once pension income starts.

Total your income, subtract deductions such as RRSP contributions and child care, apply your credits, then compare the resulting tax with the tax already withheld on your slips and any instalments paid. Tax software runs that comparison as you enter slips and shows a running balance before you submit. After filing, the notice of assessment confirms the figure, and CRA My Account shows the refund or amount owing and where it stands.

Most insurance is an exempt financial service, so no GST or HST is charged on the premium. That covers auto, home and life policies. Because the premium is exempt, a business cannot claim an input tax credit on it, although it may still deduct the premium as a business expense where the coverage relates to earning income. Some provinces tax certain premiums under their own system, outside GST/HST. Check each line on the insurer's statement.

Tourism tax and hospitality tax are loose labels for the levies added to accommodation and travel spending in Canada: a municipal accommodation tax, a destination marketing fee set by a hotel association, or a provincial accommodation levy. None is a federal tax, so the rate and the name depend on where you stay. GST/HST applies to the accommodation as well. Charges labelled a marketing fee may be voluntary rather than a tax, so ask the property.

The CRA does use text and email for limited purposes: one-time passcodes when you sign in, and notifications telling you that mail is waiting in your account. It does not text you a refund offer, a payment demand or a link asking for banking details, a SIN or a card number. Never tap a link in an unexpected message; open canada.ca yourself and sign in to My Account to see whether anything is actually outstanding.

It can. Property tax follows assessed value, and a shed, deck, finished basement or addition that adds usable space or quality usually raises the assessment at the next valuation. Provincial assessment authorities pick up permitted work through building permit data, then your municipality applies its own rate to the new value. Property tax is municipal, not a CRA matter, so ask your municipality and read your assessment notice before you build.
