CRA Tax Problem Resolution: Our Analysis

The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest — but only while the CRA has not yet contacted you. We quote cra tax problem resolution as one low-cost fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

What We Notice Preparing CRA Tax Problem Resolution Files

CRA Tax Problem Resolution can look routine from the outside. Sit on the practitioner's side of the desk for a while and you learn which parts genuinely are routine — and which parts reward an accounting firm's full attention.

The first thing worth pinning down is this: Taxpayer relief applications can cancel penalties and interest arising from CRA delay, serious illness or a natural disaster, and the CRA is limited to the ten prior calendar years.

There is a second layer to this. The normal reassessment period runs three years from the original notice of assessment for an individual or a CCPC and four years for other corporations. A waiver signed at an auditor’s request removes that limit for the issue it describes, and it stays open until it is revoked. And on timing: Once the CRA confirms an assessment or reassesses following an objection, the next step is an appeal to the Tax Court of Canada within 90 days. An extension has to be applied for rather than assumed, and the merits of the position do not extend the deadline.

What this means in practice: the rules themselves are public, but applying them to your situation is where an accounting firm earns the fee. Two files can read the same rules and land in very different places. The engagement goes fastest when last year’s filings and the current ledger arrive together.

The last note is about how we work rather than the rules: every engagement comes with a fixed fee agreed up front, a review with you before filing, and payment after — not before — the service.

Questions Owners Ask About CRA Tax Problem Resolution

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Tax Problem Resolution cost in Canada?

CRA Tax Problem Resolution starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Tax Problem Resolution?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Tax Problem Resolution take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Tax Problem Resolution?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Tax Problem Resolution different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Tax Problem Resolution services?

Our cra tax problem resolution services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Tax Problem Resolution services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What records should I gather before starting cra tax problem resolution?

The honest answer comes down to one rule. A review is won on documentation created at the time, not explanations offered afterwards. An unsupported claim is simply disallowed, however correct it was. That is the part we verify before anything is filed.

How is your approach to cra tax problem resolution different from doing it through software?

In our files, this is the deciding factor: The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest, but only while the CRA has not yet contacted the taxpayer about the issue. A tax professional applies it to your numbers before submission.

More CRA Tax Problem Resolution Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

For 2025 returns filed in 2026, most online returns are processed in about two weeks, and a non-resident return can take up to sixteen weeks. A paper return runs on a considerably longer standard because it is handled manually. Those timeframes assume a complete return that is not pulled for review. Register direct deposit and track progress in CRA My Account rather than waiting on a posted cheque.

If you owe nothing, no penalty applies, but a refund and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit and the GST/HST credit are held up until the return is processed. If you owe, a late-filing penalty is charged and interest runs on the balance and compounds daily from the day after the due date. For the 2025 tax year the deadline was 30 April 2026. File even if you cannot pay, because the penalty is driven by filing, not payment.

The CRA charges compound daily interest on an unpaid balance from the day after the payment deadline until the balance is cleared. The charge uses the prescribed rate, which the CRA resets every calendar quarter, so it moves with market rates rather than staying fixed. Arrears interest is not deductible. Look up the current quarter on the CRA's prescribed interest rates page, and pay something against the balance to slow the daily charge.

A taxpayer is any person or entity with tax obligations to the CRA: an individual, a corporation, a trust or an estate. For individuals the test is residency rather than citizenship, so a Canadian resident reports worldwide income while a non-resident reports Canadian-source income only. You can be a taxpayer with a filing obligation in a year you owe nothing, and filing is what secures credits and benefits, so the label is not limited to people who pay.

Most account questions are answered faster in My Account or My Business Account, where balances, notices, slips, benefit payments and instalment records are all visible without waiting on hold. For anything the portal will not show, call the individual or business enquiries line published on canada.ca, and have your social insurance or business number, a figure from a recent return and your address ready for the identity checks. An authorised representative can be added with the AUT-01.

The CRA publishes its numbers on the Contact the Canada Revenue Agency page, with separate lines for individual enquiries, business enquiries and benefits. We do not quote them here because they change and vary by service. Have your social insurance number or business number, a recent return and your postal code ready, since the agent will verify your identity before discussing your account. Automated self-service handles balances, and My Account answers many questions without a call.

The individual and business enquiry numbers, along with their hours, are listed on the CRA contact page. Have your social insurance number or business number and a figure from a recent return ready, because the agent must verify you before discussing anything. Many tasks never need a call: CRA My Account and My Business Account show balances, assessments, slips and instalments, and let you file a dispute, change a return or set up a payment arrangement.

No. Filing and paying are legal obligations, not choices. What is voluntary is the self-assessment design: you report your own income and calculate the tax, and the CRA verifies afterwards. Ignoring the obligation leads to penalties, compounding interest, an assessment raised without your figures, and collection action such as garnishing wages. Arguments that income tax does not apply to individuals have failed in court every time. If you have unfiled years, ask about the CRA's voluntary disclosure route before it contacts you.

Several receipts fall outside income entirely: lottery and casual gambling winnings, GST/HST credit and Canada child benefit payments, most gifts and inheritances, life insurance death benefits, growth and withdrawals inside a TFSA, and the gain on a home that qualifies as your principal residence. Strike pay and most personal injury damages are also excluded. Nearly everything else is taxable, including tips, side income and crypto gains. The CRA publishes a list of amounts that are not taxed.

A real CRA agent will ask you to confirm identifying details, including your social insurance number, once you have called them or after they reach you about a known file. What the CRA does not do is demand your SIN, banking details or a payment over a call you were not expecting, threaten arrest, or ask for gift cards or crypto. If a call feels wrong, hang up and phone the CRA back on a number from canada.ca.

These are calculated lines rather than amounts you enter. Line 40600 is federal tax on your taxable income; line 42000 is net federal tax after non-refundable credits, the federal foreign tax credit and any additions. Line 43700 totals the income tax already deducted from your slips, and line 48200 totals your credits and withholdings. Subtracting line 48200 from total payable produces either a refund on line 48400 or a balance owing on line 48500. Carry-forward amounts are listed in CRA My Account.

Canadian sellers advertise pre-tax prices and add GST, HST or provincial sales tax at the till. Nothing requires tax-included pricing, rates differ by province, and taxability depends on what is sold: one trip to the till can mix fully taxable goods, zero-rated goods such as basic groceries, and exempt supplies. Fuel is the exception — the price posted at the pump already contains the fuel taxes and the GST or HST, so nothing is added when you pay.
