Interim CFO Services: Our Analysis

A fractional CFO typically costs a fraction of a $200,000-plus full-time hire while still covering forecasting, banking and pricing decisions. Because the fee is fixed and affordable, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

What the Paperwork Teaches Us About Interim CFO Services

Good interim cfo services work is mostly about sequencing: which questions to settle before which. These notes lay out the sequence an accountant follows on Interim CFO Services engagements.

The starting point is not a strategy but a constraint: Interest is deductible where the borrowed money is used to earn income from a business or property, and the test is what the money actually funded. The paper trail linking each borrowing to its use is what supports the deduction when the loan and the spending sit years apart.

There is a companion rule that changes how the first one plays out in practice: Amounts received for services not yet performed are included in income when received, with a reserve available only where the statutory conditions are met. A cash balance built out of customer prepayments can carry a tax liability inside it, which is why deferred revenue is not a financing source. One more rule deserves attention, mostly because ignoring it is expensive in ways that only show up later. Working capital, not profit, is what constrains growth. A business scaling receivables faster than it collects them runs out of cash while the income statement looks healthy.

You do not need to hold all of this in your head. You need someone who does — and an accounting firm handling interim cfo services week after week keeps these rules current so you do not have to. The smoothest files are the ones where the client arrives with these records already assembled.

No surprises is the operating principle: the fee is agreed and fixed before we start, you review everything before it is filed, and payment comes after the work, not before.

Interim CFO Services Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Interim CFO Services cost in Canada?

Interim CFO Services starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Interim CFO Services?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Interim CFO Services take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Interim CFO Services?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Interim CFO Services different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Interim CFO Services?

Our interim cfo services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Interim CFO Services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How is your approach to interim cfo services different from doing it through software?

There is a widespread assumption here, and the actual position is worth stating plainly. Bank covenants are tested on ratios, not on profit. A business can be comfortably profitable and still breach a working-capital covenant. If your current setup was built on the assumption instead of the rule, that is fixable — but sooner is better than later.

What records should I gather before starting interim cfo services?

Working capital, not profit, is what constrains growth. A business scaling receivables faster than it collects them runs out of cash while the income statement looks healthy. We flag this early with every client it touches, because finding it out at filing time leaves you far fewer options than finding it out now.

Commonly Searched Interim CFO Services Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse were self-employed, the filing deadline moves to 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest starts the day after the payment deadline, and a late-filing penalty applies on top when a return with a balance owing is filed late. File on time even with nothing owing, because income-tested benefits are recalculated from the filed return.

For the 2025 tax year the filing and payment deadline is 30 April 2026. If you or your spouse carried on a business, the return itself is due 15 June 2026, but any balance owing is still due 30 April 2026. Interest runs on unpaid amounts after the payment deadline, and a late-filed return with a balance owing also attracts a late-filing penalty. Filing on time keeps benefit and credit payments flowing.

Income tax is tax charged on the income you earn in a year, levied by both the federal government and your province or territory. Rates are graduated, so successive slices of taxable income are taxed at higher rates, and credits such as the basic personal amount reduce the tax calculated. Employment income is taxed through payroll withholding and settled on your T1 return. Quebec residents also file a separate provincial return with Revenu Quebec.

Multiply the pre-tax price by the combined sales tax rate for the province where the sale takes place, then add that amount to the price. In HST provinces it is one rate; elsewhere GST and the provincial tax are applied separately, and in Quebec the QST is calculated on the price before GST rather than on a GST-included amount. Zero-rated and exempt items get nothing added. The place of supply decides the rate, not where your business is based.

You can file a Canadian personal return at no cost using CRA-certified free tax software, which sends the return through NETFILE. Volunteer clinics run by community organisations also prepare simple returns free of charge for people with modest income. Paper filing costs only postage. Free software suits straightforward employment and pension income; self-employment, rental or foreign property usually needs a preparer. CRA online filing for 2025 returns opened 23 February 2026 and closes 29 January 2027.

Insurance premiums themselves are generally not subject to GST/HST, because insurance is treated as a financial service, though provinces levy their own taxes on certain premiums. On the income side, premiums your employer pays for group life or accidental death coverage are a taxable benefit reported on your T4, while employer contributions to a private health or dental plan generally are not. Check the CRA's guide to employer benefits and allowances.

Total your income, subtract deductions such as RRSP contributions and child care, apply your credits, then compare the resulting tax with the tax already withheld on your slips and any instalments paid. Tax software runs that comparison as you enter slips and shows a running balance before you submit. After filing, the notice of assessment confirms the figure, and CRA My Account shows the refund or amount owing and where it stands.

Zero-rated sales are taxable supplies that carry GST/HST at 0%. Basic groceries, prescription drugs, most medical devices, agricultural products and many exports are the common examples. The difference from exempt sales matters: on zero-rated sales you charge no tax but can still claim input tax credits on the GST/HST you paid on related costs, and those sales count toward the $30,000 small-supplier threshold for 2026. Exempt sales give you no input tax credits.

You need your social insurance number and current address, every income slip you received such as T4, T4A, T5 and T3, and your revenue and expense records if you are self-employed. Add support for deductions and credits: RRSP contributions, tuition, medical expenses, childcare, donations, moving costs and any provincial credit you claim. Bring last year's notice of assessment and your direct deposit details. Most slips can be pulled straight from your CRA account into tax software approved by the CRA.

There is no single rate. On purchases, GST is 5%, with HST of 13% in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 14% in Nova Scotia since 1 April 2025; Quebec adds 9.975% QST, British Columbia 7% PST, Saskatchewan 6% PST and Manitoba 7% RST. On income, the 2026 federal brackets begin at 14% and rise through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33%, with provincial tax charged on top.

Rent on your own home is not deductible on a federal return, so on its own it changes nothing. What it can do is feed a provincial credit: Ontario's energy and property tax credit, paid through the Ontario Trillium Benefit, is calculated partly from rent paid, and Manitoba and Quebec have their own renter measures. Keep receipts and your landlord's name. Separately, employees and self-employed people working from home deduct a share of rent as workspace cost.

Federal tax for 2026 starts at 14% on the lowest bracket and rises through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33% on the highest, and your province adds its own bracketed rate on top. Only the income above each threshold is taxed at that higher rate. The federal basic personal amount of $16,452 for 2026 shelters the first slice, tapering for high earners. Sales tax, CPP and EI are charged separately.
