Decoding Sage Accounting Support Jargon

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Sage Accounting Support: Our Analysis

The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. Our sage accounting support engagement is priced as a economical flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

An Accountant's Notes on Sage Accounting Support

What actually separates a clean sage accounting support file from a messy one? A working accountant would point to a short list of rules, and these notes walk through it.

Here is where every serious conversation about Sage Accounting Support begins: The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, in a form that allows the return to be verified. Where records cannot support the return, the CRA is entitled to assess on its own estimate — and the burden of disproving that estimate falls on the taxpayer.

Right behind it comes a rule owners rarely hear about until it bites: An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated. One more rule deserves attention, mostly because ignoring it is expensive in ways that only show up later. Inventory is valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value, applied consistently. Changing method without CRA consent reopens prior years. Obsolete stock carried at cost overstates income, and the write-down is usually taken years after it was justified.

If the rules above feel like they might interact in your situation, that instinct is usually right. Sorting out how is the core of what an accountant does on a sage accounting support engagement. The engagement goes fastest when last year’s filings and the current ledger arrive together.

We keep the commercial side simple. The fee is fixed and agreed in advance, the file is reviewed with you before filing, and you pay after the service — in that order, every time.

Sage Accounting Support Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Sage Accounting Support tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

5 Years Filed, $139,000 Removed From The Assessed Balance — Courier Subcontractor, Surrey

5 years of returns were outstanding at a courier subcontractor paid by the drop in Surrey, British Columbia. That came on top of meals and entertainment coded at full cost with the input tax credit claimed on the whole amount. Filing on real numbers removed $139,000 of assessed tax.

A courier subcontractor paid by the drop in Surrey, British Columbia had not filed for 5 years. The CRA had issued arbitrary assessments. The business was carrying meals and entertainment coded at full cost with the input tax credit claimed on the whole amount. That came on top of a growing interest balance. We started with the oldest year and worked forward so each year's closing balances fed the next. We converted the foreign-currency purchases at transaction-date rates and recorded the exchange difference at settlement instead of burying it in cost of sales. We filed the years in sequence rather than all at once. Every year is now filed and assessed on actual figures. The notional assessments were vacated and $139,000 of the estimated balance came off, with a payment arrangement covering the rest.

Case Study 2

Audit Defence Closed In 10 Weeks, $22,500 Cleared — Two-Location Cafe, Burnaby

A two-location cafe in Burnaby, British Columbia was under review. The issue was a bookkeeping file where owner draws, payroll and supplier payments all landed in the same account. The file closed in 10 weeks with $22,500 of proposed tax cleared.

A two-location cafe in Burnaby, British Columbia was selected for review. A bookkeeping file where owner draws, payroll and supplier payments all landed in the same account had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on Sage accounting support came to $22,500. We rebuilt sales from the processor settlement reports so gross sales, fees and refunds each landed in an account of their own. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $22,500 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 3

$38,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Subscription Box Retailer, Red Deer

A subscription box retailer in Red Deer, Alberta was profitable and permanently short of cash. Behind the gap sat a payroll clearing account that had never been brought to zero, carrying a balance nobody could explain. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $38,000.

A subscription box retailer in Red Deer, Alberta was profitable on paper and short of cash every month. A payroll clearing account that had never been brought to zero, carrying a balance nobody could explain explained most of the gap. We separated the owner’s personal spending out of the corporate accounts and cleared the resulting shareholder loan properly. We also built a thirteen-week cash view so tax payments stopped competing with payroll for the same dollars. $38,000 was released back into working capital. Remittances have been on time every period since, and the forecast shows the tax outflow before it lands.

Case Study 4

Desk-Review Assessment Of $70,000 Vacated — Small Law Practice, Barrie

A desk review assessed a small law practice in Barrie, Ontario $70,000. The dispute was over three years of returns filed off numbers nobody could trace back to a bank statement. Producing the records vacated the assessment.

A small law practice in Barrie, Ontario was carrying $70,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from three years of returns filed off numbers nobody could trace back to a bank statement. Much of that amount accumulated during a period the CRA itself had delayed. We rebuilt the ledger from bank and card statements and matched every receipt to a transaction. We removed duplicated input tax credits before they became a review. We framed the relief application on the specific grounds the CRA guidelines recognise rather than on general hardship. The assessment was vacated. $70,000 came off the account, and the documentation now on file makes the same position straightforward to defend next time.

Case Study 5

$230,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Equipment Rental Yard, Toronto

An equipment rental yard in Toronto, Ontario was preparing to sell. However, passive assets sitting inside the operating company, disqualifying the shares disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $230,000 under the exemption.

An equipment rental yard in Toronto, Ontario had an offer on the table and 24 months to close. The shares did not qualify for the capital gains exemption. Passive assets sitting inside the operating company, disqualifying the shares was part of the reason. We purified the corporation so the shares met the qualifying tests. We cleared the payroll and sales tax clearing accounts every month and tied each remittance to the liability it settled. All of it was done well ahead of the closing date. The sale closed on schedule with $230,000 sheltered by the lifetime capital gains exemption across the shareholders.

Case Study 6

Growth Handled Without A Missed Filing, $29,000 Freed — Specialty Coffee Roaster, Edmonton

A specialty coffee roaster in Edmonton, Alberta was scaling. The growth exposed a receivables list that included invoices collected eleven months earlier. The back office was rebuilt to match, freeing $29,000.

A specialty coffee roaster in Edmonton, Alberta was opening in a second province. That meant different filing obligations and a different payroll regime. A receivables list that included invoices collected eleven months earlier already sat in the file. We recoded the meals and entertainment accounts to the statutory limit and reversed the over-claimed input tax credits before the next return went in. We then put monthly reporting in place. That let the owner see the cash effect of growth while there was still time to act on it. Growth was absorbed without a compliance failure. $29,000 of cash was released, and the monthly reporting now flags a problem while it is still small.

Sage Accounting Support Questions We Hear Most Often

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Sage Accounting Support cost in Canada?

Sage Accounting Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Sage Accounting Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Sage Accounting Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Sage Accounting Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Sage Accounting Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Sage Accounting Support services?

Our sage accounting support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Sage Accounting Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What goes wrong most often with sage accounting support?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, in a form that allows the return to be verified. Where records cannot support the return, the CRA is entitled to assess on its own estimate — and the burden of disproving that estimate falls on the taxpayer. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

What does an accounting firm actually check during sage accounting support?

An accounting firm answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. Foreign-currency amounts have to be converted at the exchange rate for the day the transaction occurred. Applying one year-end rate to twelve months of purchases distorts the recorded cost and hides the exchange gain or loss on settlement. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

You can pay through CRA My Business Account or My Payment, through your own financial institution's online banking by adding the CRA GST/HST payment as a payee under your business number, or by pre-authorised debit arranged in My Business Account. Third-party providers accept credit cards for a fee. Payment is due by the deadline for your reporting period, and filing the return does not by itself move the money, so schedule the two separately.

Divide the total by one plus the rate. At Ontario's 13% in 2026, a $113 tax-included total is $113 divided by 1.13, or $100 before tax and $13 of HST. Use 1.14 in Nova Scotia, 1.15 in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 1.05 where only the 5% GST applies. Multiplying the total by 13 over 113 gives the Ontario tax directly.

Call the CRA's individual enquiries line and ask to have the account unlocked; the number is on the Contact the Canada Revenue Agency page. Accounts lock after repeated failed sign-ins, and the CRA also revokes access itself when it suspects credentials were compromised. The agent verifies you with your social insurance number, date of birth, address and a figure from a recently filed return, so have a copy of it in front of you.

For the 2025 tax year the balance was due 30 April 2026, including for self-employed filers whose return itself was not due until 15 June 2026. Interest runs on anything unpaid after that date and compounds daily, so the amount grows while you wait. If you cannot pay in full, contact the CRA to set up a payment arrangement; it does not stop interest, but it holds off collection action while you keep to it.

Because GST/HST follows the place of supply, not the seller's address. For goods, the rate is set by the province they are delivered to; for most services, by the customer's address on file. So an Ontario business billing Halifax charges 14% in 2026, Moncton 15%, and Calgary 5%. Getting it wrong means under-collecting or over-collecting, and the Canada Revenue Agency assesses any shortfall against the seller.

Because you remit the tax you charged customers, less the GST/HST you paid on business purchases. Tax you collect was never your money, so when collections exceed your input tax credits, the difference is payable. The usual reasons a bill feels large are missed input tax credits, receipts too thin to support a claim, the quick method applying to your sales, or the collected tax having been spent as working capital. Bank it separately.

Personal income tax is the tax an individual pays on income from all sources: employment and self-employment earnings, pensions, investment income and the taxable portion of capital gains. Canada applies graduated federal rates with a provincial or territorial layer on top, reduced by credits such as the basic personal amount. Residents are taxed on worldwide income, non-residents only on certain Canadian-source income. You report it on a T1 return each year, and employers withhold tax as you are paid.

Medical costs give a non-refundable credit rather than a deduction, so they reduce tax owing instead of income. Only the portion of eligible expenses above an income-linked threshold counts, which is why small claims often produce nothing. Eligible items include prescription medication, dental work, eyeglasses, many practitioner fees, and travel for treatment unavailable near home. Cosmetic procedures and most products bought over the counter do not qualify. Pool the family receipts on one return and keep them all.

The refund or balance owing sits in the summary section at the end of the T1, after total credits are set against total tax payable. That is your own calculation, though, not the final word. The amount the CRA actually pays appears on your notice of assessment and in CRA My Account, and it can differ if slips, credits or an older balance changed the result. The notice sets out any change it made.

In Canada the federal return for individuals is the T1, filed with the CRA, and it calculates your provincial or territorial tax in the same package, so there is no separate provincial return except in Quebec, where a second return goes to Revenu Quebec. Corporations file the T2 instead. To check a filed return or a refund, sign in to CRA My Account and read the notice of assessment, which shows what was accepted and any change the CRA made.

Nothing comes back federally, because there is no federal deduction or credit for rent on your home. Some provinces do pay a benefit that takes rent into account, including Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec, and the amount turns on your income, family size, age and the rent actually paid in the year. You claim it on the provincial schedule attached to your return, so it is worth filing even in a year with little or no income.

Day camps and day sports schools qualify as child care when you paid them so you could work, run a business or study, and the child meets the age and residency conditions. Overnight camps and boarding schools also qualify, but only up to a weekly limit per child rather than the whole fee. A program that is mainly instruction, such as music lessons or skills coaching, may not count. Keep the receipt showing the child's name and the care amount.
