Professional Corporation Tax Return: Our Analysis

The 9% federal small business rate covers the first $500,000 of active business income, with each province layering its own rate on top. Because the fee is fixed and pocket-friendly, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

What the Paperwork Teaches Us About Professional Corporation Tax Return

Clients often arrive treating professional corporation tax return as a form-filling exercise. In practice, a tax practitioner spends more time on judgment calls than on data entry — and those calls are what these notes cover.

Start with the rule that decides most files: A dividend between connected corporations is generally deductible in computing taxable income, but subsection 55(2) can recharacterise it as a capital gain where it exceeds safe income and no permitted purpose applies. The safe-income analysis belongs before the dividend is paid, not after.

The second point follows directly from the first. A CCPC files its T2 within six months of year-end, with the balance due two months after (three where the small business deduction is claimed). The 9% federal small business rate applies to the first $500,000 of active business income. The filing and payment deadlines differ, and interest runs from the payment date. Filing on time while paying late still costs money. The documentation side matters just as much. Planning has to be in place before the transaction. The salary-versus-dividend mix, the timing of a capital purchase and the choice of year-end all change the outcome, but only prospectively. Almost every planning opportunity we see missed was available and simply not taken in time; very few are recoverable after year-end.

The common thread in these rules is that they punish assumptions and reward verification. Engaging a tax practitioner for professional corporation tax return is, at bottom, a way of replacing assumptions with checked answers. To move quickly, have your ledger exports, bank statements and prior filings ready when we start.

Every professional corporation tax return engagement carries the same commitments: a fixed fee settled before we begin, your sign-off before anything is filed, and payment only after the service is complete.

Case Study 2

$36,500 Of Penalties And Interest Cancelled On Relief — Import and Distribution Corporation, Barrie

An import and distribution corporation in Barrie, Ontario was carrying $36,500 of penalties and interest from a loss year carried forward by default when carrying it back would have produced a refund cheque. A relief application cancelled it.

Case Study 3

Growth Handled Without A Missed Filing, $38,500 Freed — Holding and Operating Companies, London

Scaling exposed dividends moved up to a holding company year after year with no safe-income support on file at a holding company and its operating subsidiary in London, Ontario. The back office was rebuilt to match, freeing $38,500.

Case Study 4

Corporate Structure Rebuilt For $72,000 Of Annual Savings — First-Profit Technology CCPC, Vancouver

The structure at a technology CCPC approaching its first profitable year in Vancouver, British Columbia no longer fitted the business, and passive investment income that had crossed the $50,000 grind threshold unnoticed showed it. Rebuilding it saves $72,000 a year.

Case Study 5

$30,000 Cut From The Annual Tax Bill — Non-Calendar Year-End Corporation, Victoria

A corporation with a non-calendar fiscal year-end in Victoria, British Columbia was filing correctly and still overpaying because of retained earnings building in the operating company with no plan for extracting them. Restructuring the position cut $30,000 from the annual bill.

Case Study 6

4 Years Filed, $54,000 Removed From The Assessed Balance — Incorporated Consultancy, Surrey

4 years of returns were outstanding at an incorporated consultancy in Surrey, British Columbia, on top of a distribution treated as tax-free capital dividend with no election ever filed. Filing on real numbers removed $54,000 of assessed tax.

Professional Corporation Tax Return Questions We Hear Most Often

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Professional Corporation Tax Return cost in Canada?

Professional Corporation Tax Return starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Professional Corporation Tax Return?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Professional Corporation Tax Return take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Professional Corporation Tax Return?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Professional Corporation Tax Return different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Professional Corporation Tax Return services?

Our professional corporation tax return services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Professional Corporation Tax Return services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What does a tax expert actually check during professional corporation tax return?

A CCPC’s T2 is due six months after year-end, but the balance owing is due two months after year-end — three for many small CCPCs claiming the small business deduction. Filing on time does not stop interest running on an unpaid balance. We flag this early with every client it touches, because finding it out at filing time leaves you far fewer options than finding it out now.

What records should I gather before starting professional corporation tax return?

The honest starting point is this: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it. Everything else we would tell you is tailoring, and tailoring requires seeing your file.

Searched Questions About Professional Corporation Tax Return

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Online banking is the simplest route: add the CRA as a payee, select the account and tax year precisely, and pay from your chequing account. CRA My Payment takes debit card payments, and pre-authorised debit can be scheduled in My Account or My Business Account for a single amount or a run of instalments. Corporations and GST/HST registrants use the same channels under their business number. Keep the confirmation number and allow several days for the payment to post.

For personal income tax, your account number is your social insurance number. For a business it is the nine-digit business number plus the two-letter program identifier and four-digit reference, so corporation tax, GST/HST and payroll each have their own account. Select the matching payment type and the correct tax year or period as well: a payment posted to the wrong program or year leaves the balance you meant to clear still outstanding and still accruing interest.

An incorporated small business generally pays the federal small business rate of 9% on its first $500,000 of active business income for 2026 instead of the 15% general rate, plus a reduced provincial rate, in Ontario 3.2% and falling to 2.2% from 1 July 2026. Unincorporated businesses deduct reasonable expenses on a T2125 instead. Both can claim capital cost allowance, home-office and vehicle costs, and targeted incentives exist for research and hiring.

Often yes. An inground pool is a permanent improvement, so your provincial assessment authority can add it to the assessed value of the property, and a higher assessment means a higher municipal tax bill. The increase reflects what the pool adds to market value, not what you spent building it. Permits for excavation and fencing are usually how the assessor finds out. Your assessment notice sets out the review process if the addition looks overstated.

Yes. A bank or other payer that issues you a T5 also files a copy with the Canada Revenue Agency, so your investment income is on file whether or not the slip reaches you. Issued slips generally show up in My Account, which is worth checking before you file. Report the income even when a slip is missing or late, because omitting it invites a reassessment with interest, and interest income is taxable in full at your marginal rate.

Tax preparation fees are deductible when they relate to earning income. A self-employed person or a partner deducts the accounting fee on the business statement, Form T2125, and a rental owner deducts it on the rental statement, Form T776. A salaried employee with a straightforward T1 generally cannot claim it. Fees paid to prepare an objection or an appeal of an assessment are also deductible, and fees for investment advice may qualify as carrying charges.

Only if you are authorised first. The CRA will not discuss an account with anyone who is not on file as a representative, even a spouse or adult child. The taxpayer can add you online through My Account, or you can submit an AUT-01 with their signature. For someone who cannot sign, the CRA needs legal documents such as a power of attorney or estate paperwork. Authorisation can be limited to view-only access.

Call the CRA enquiries line for individuals or businesses published on canada.ca, and have your social insurance number, date of birth and a figure from a recent return ready, because the agent verifies your identity before discussing your file. Waits are shortest early in the morning and outside the spring filing rush. Someone else can only speak for you if you authorise them, which is done through My Account or an AUT-01.

Yes. Canadian Armed Forces members are taxed like other employees, with pay and taxable allowances reported on a T4 and income tax, CPP and EI withheld at source. Relief is targeted rather than general: members deployed on designated international missions can claim a deduction for the deployment period, and some allowances are not taxable. Your province of residence for tax follows your posting and family circumstances, which matters when you move mid-year. CRA's page for Armed Forces members has the current limits.

Yes. Dividends and most other investment income are taxable in the year received, but interest is reported as it accrues each year, so a compound GIC or strip bond produces taxable interest annually even though nothing is paid out until maturity; the amounts usually appear on a T5 slip, and income below the slip-issuing threshold still has to be reported. A share's rise in value is taxed only when you sell, and only part of the resulting capital gain is included in income.

Travel insurance is only partly claimable. The medical portion of a travel policy generally counts as a private health services plan premium and can be included with your medical expenses, while trip cancellation, baggage and interruption coverage cannot. Ask the insurer to break the premium down, because a single quoted price will not support the claim. Insurance bought for a genuine business trip is deductible against business income instead.

Payments from a registered source, such as an annuity bought with RRSP or pension money, are fully taxable as income in the year received. A non-registered annuity is taxed only on its interest element, because the rest of each payment returns your own capital: a prescribed annuity spreads that interest evenly across the payments, while a non-prescribed one reports more of it in the early years. Slips report the taxable portion annually.
