Mining & Exploration Companies Terms Worth Knowing

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Mining & Exploration Companies: Our Analysis

Mining & Exploration Companies carry their own CRA profile, and generic bookkeeping misses it. The qualified farm property capital gains exemption shelters over $1 million per owner when land and quota change hands within the family. We price the whole engagement as one low-cost fixed fee, quoted before work begins.

Mining & Exploration Companies: Notes From Our Practice

What does a tax preparation specialist actually look for when a mining & exploration companies file lands on the desk? Not the totals first — the structure. The sector shapes the return before a single figure is entered.

One rule does more work than the rest combined, so it goes first. A small corporation still carries the full compliance set: T2, GST/HST, payroll, and the annual return with the incorporating jurisdiction. The annual corporate return is separate from the T2 and is the one most often forgotten, which can lead to administrative dissolution.

Once that is settled, the next question answers itself less often than clients expect. An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated.

If any of this maps onto your situation, the next step is deliberately low-stakes: we quote a fixed fee up front, prepare the work, and you review everything before you pay. Sector files are what we do all week — bring us yours.

Mining & Exploration Companies: the tax rules that actually apply

What Mining & Exploration Companies need from an accountant is not what a generic small business needs. The agriculture, natural resources & energy sector carries its own CRA scrutiny, its own deduction profile and its own filing calendar, and a file prepared without that context leaves money and defensibility on the table.

What the CRA looks at

Farmers may report on the cash basis, which is unique in Canadian tax and allows income to be managed through the timing of sales and purchases.

Deferred grain tickets move income to the following year only where the elevator issues them correctly, and the CRA verifies the paperwork.

What you can actually claim

The qualified farm or fishing property capital gains exemption shelters over $1 million per owner when land, quota or a fishing licence changes hands within the family.

Livestock deferral elections allow income from forced sales to be pushed into the next year in prescribed drought or flood regions.

The filing calendar that applies

Farmers who file by June 15 still owe any balance by April 30, and the AgriInvest and AgriStability programmes carry their own reporting deadlines.

Most farm sales are zero-rated for GST/HST, which puts the operation in a permanent refund position worth filing frequently to collect.

Where the planning value sits

Resource operators access separate pools for exploration and development expense, and flow-through shares push those deductions to investors.

The intergenerational farm transfer rules allow a rollover at cost to a child, deferring tax entirely — but only where the property was used principally in farming.

None of this is charged as extra advice. It is simply what a properly prepared file for Mining & Exploration Companies includes, at the fixed fee agreed up front.

Case Study 1

$96,000 Reassessment Reduced To Nil On Review — Logging Contractor, Guelph

A $96,000 reassessment was proposed against a logging contractor in Guelph, Ontario. It followed a chart of accounts that told the owner nothing about mining & exploration companies margin. The documented response reduced it to nil.

A review notice arrived at a logging contractor in Guelph, Ontario, covering mining & exploration companies accounting and tax for two tax years. The auditor's working position was an adjustment of $96,000. It was driven by a chart of accounts that told the owner nothing about mining & exploration companies margin. Rather than negotiate, we rebuilt the record. We reviewed every sector-specific deduction against the current rules and claimed the ones that had been missed. We then submitted a point-by-point response that answered each proposed adjustment with the document behind it. The auditor accepted the documented position and closed the review without adjustment, protecting $96,000 and leaving the prior filings undisturbed.

Case Study 2

Incentive Review Recovered $93,000 Across 4 Open Years — Solar Installation Company, Halifax

An incentive review at a solar installation company in Halifax, Nova Scotia recovered $93,000 across 4 open years. It found provincial credits left unclaimed alongside every federal filing.

An incentive review at a solar installation company in Halifax, Nova Scotia started from a simple question: what has never been claimed? The answer ran to 4 years. It was driven by provincial credits left unclaimed alongside every federal filing. We documented the positions to the standard the CRA applies to this sector specifically. We documented eligibility to the standard a reviewer would apply rather than the standard a claim form requires. The credits produced $93,000 across the open years. The tracking now in place means the following year's claim is documented as the work happens rather than reconstructed afterwards.

Case Study 3

$440,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Cattle Ranch, Barrie

A cattle ranch in Barrie, Ontario was preparing to sell. However, no valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $440,000 under the exemption.

A cattle ranch in Barrie, Ontario had an offer on the table and 34 months to close. The shares did not qualify for the capital gains exemption. No valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed was part of the reason. We purified the corporation so the shares met the qualifying tests. We aligned the reporting calendar with the sector’s own seasonal cycle rather than a generic year-end. All of it was done well ahead of the closing date. The sale closed on schedule with $440,000 sheltered by the lifetime capital gains exemption across the shareholders.

Case Study 4

6 Years Filed, $110,000 Removed From The Assessed Balance — Grain Farm Corporation, Hamilton

6 years of returns were outstanding at a grain farm corporation in Hamilton, Ontario. That came on top of seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it. Filing on real numbers removed $110,000 of assessed tax.

A grain farm corporation in Hamilton, Ontario had not filed for 6 years. The CRA had issued arbitrary assessments. The business was carrying seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it. That came on top of a growing interest balance. We started with the oldest year and worked forward so each year's closing balances fed the next. We reassigned the asset classes on the CCA schedule and corrected the opening balances. We filed the years in sequence rather than all at once. Every year is now filed and assessed on actual figures. The notional assessments were vacated and $110,000 of the estimated balance came off, with a payment arrangement covering the rest.

Case Study 5

Corporate Structure Rebuilt For $23,000 Of Annual Savings — Greenhouse Grower, Windsor

The structure at a greenhouse grower in Windsor, Ontario no longer fitted the business. Industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged showed it. Rebuilding it saves $23,000 a year.

The structure at a greenhouse grower in Windsor, Ontario dated from years earlier. It had been set up for a business that no longer existed. Industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged had become expensive. We rebuilt the chart of accounts around how a mining & exploration companies business actually earns and spends. The reorganisation used the rollover provisions rather than a taxable transfer, so no tax fell due on the restructuring itself. $23,000 of annual saving, achieved on a tax-deferred basis. The minute book, elections and valuations are all in the file.

Case Study 6

Notice Of Objection Allowed In Full, $41,000 Reversed — Mining Services Supplier, Ottawa

A $41,000 reassessment landed at a mining services supplier in Ottawa, Ontario. It rested on equipment and asset classes assigned by guesswork rather than the CCA schedule. The objection was allowed in full.

A mining services supplier in Ottawa, Ontario had been reassessed for $41,000. 13 days were left on the objection deadline. The reassessment rested on equipment and asset classes assigned by guesswork rather than the CCA schedule. We filed the objection inside the deadline with a complete submission rather than a placeholder. Alongside it, we reviewed every sector-specific deduction against the current rules and claimed the ones that had been missed. The appeals officer allowed the objection in full. $41,000 was reversed and the account returned to a nil balance.

Common Questions Before Starting Mining & Exploration Companies Work

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

Should a mining & exploration companies business incorporate?

Incorporation usually pays once profit consistently exceeds what the owner draws personally, because the retained amount is taxed at small business rates rather than personal rates. Where the entire profit is withdrawn each year, incorporation often costs more in filing and compliance than it saves.

What triggers a CRA audit for a mining & exploration companies business?

Ratios that sit outside sector norms, repeated losses, large or round-numbered expense claims, and mismatches between filed slips and reported income. Most reviews are resolved on documentation alone, which is why contemporaneous records matter more than the size of any single claim.

How are employees and subcontractors treated differently for a mining & exploration companies business?

The CRA looks at control, ownership of tools, chance of profit and risk of loss rather than what the contract is titled. Where a worker is reclassified as an employee, the unremitted CPP, EI and withholding land on the payer, together with penalties and interest.

What instalments does a mining & exploration companies business have to pay?

Individuals pay quarterly instalments once net tax owing passes $3,000 in the current year and either of the two preceding years. Corporations generally pay monthly, with many small CCPCs eligible for quarterly instalments instead. Basing them on a current-year estimate avoids overpaying after a strong year.

What tax deductions are mining & exploration companies businesses most likely to miss?

The recurring ones are capital cost allowance on equipment placed in service late in the year, the business-use portion of vehicle and home-office costs, and professional development. Each is defensible when documented at the time and difficult to defend when reconstructed later.

How much does accounting for mining & exploration companies businesses cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and bookkeeping at $10 per month, quoted as a fixed fee before work begins. Sector complexity does not trigger a surcharge. Review the full price list.

Do mining & exploration companies businesses need to register for GST/HST?

Registration is mandatory once taxable revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive quarters. Registering voluntarily below that threshold is often worthwhile, because it lets you recover input tax credits on startup and equipment purchases.

Should I incorporate my mining & exploration companies business?

Incorporation usually pays off once profit consistently exceeds what you draw personally, because retained earnings are taxed at the small business rate rather than your marginal rate. Below that point the added compliance cost often outweighs the benefit. We model both before you decide.

What does "Pay After Service" mean?

Our Pay After Service model means you review and approve all deliverables before making any payment. We prepare your returns or financial files, you review them, and only then do you pay. This ensures 100% satisfaction.

How does price matching work?

If you find a lower verified quote from another accounting firm in Canada for the same scope of services, we will match it immediately. Simply provide a verified quote.

How do I submit my tax documents?

We support completely secure digital uploads via our client portal, or you can email them to us. We support files from QuickBooks, Xero, Excel, and scan/photo documents.

What tax issues come up most often in the mining & exploration companies sector?

The honest answer comes down to one rule. A small corporation still carries the full compliance set: T2, GST/HST, payroll, and the annual return with the incorporating jurisdiction. The annual corporate return is separate from the T2 and is the one most often forgotten, which can lead to administrative dissolution. That is the part we verify before anything is filed.

Do businesses in mining & exploration companies need a different kind of bookkeeping setup?

Our answer starts where the legislation starts. An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated. From there it is a matter of applying it to your year — and that application, not the rule itself, is where an accounting firm earns the fee.

A write-off is simply a deductible expense. You subtract it from the income it helped earn, so the saving equals the expense multiplied by your marginal tax rate, not the full amount spent. To qualify, the cost must be incurred to earn business or employment income, be reasonable in amount, and be backed by a receipt. Purely personal costs never qualify, and mixed-use items such as a vehicle or a home office are split by business-use proportion.

Land transfer tax is provincial and is charged on the purchase price, usually on a graduated scale, so the cost depends on the province and the price. Buyers in Toronto pay a municipal land transfer tax on top of Ontario's. Alberta, Saskatchewan and the territories charge registration or transfer fees instead of a full tax. Several provinces offer first-time buyer rebates, and non-resident buyers can face extra tax. Use your province's own calculator before closing.

Total income is measured before tax. On a T1 it is the sum of your income sources for the year, such as employment income from your T4, self-employment, investment, and pension amounts, added up before deductions and before any tax withheld. Tax withheld at source is a payment toward your final bill, not a reduction in income. Deductions take total income down to net income, and further deductions give taxable income, which the rates apply to.

Your purchase price does not set your property tax directly, but it becomes part of the sales evidence assessment authorities use to value comparable homes, so paying well above market can pull your assessment up at the next valuation. A private appraisal done for a mortgage or refinancing is not shared with the assessor and changes nothing on its own. The assessed value on your notice, times the municipal rate, is what drives the bill.

The owner. Municipalities bill the registered owner, so the landlord is responsible and any arrears become a charge against the property rather than the tenant. In practice residential rent is set to cover it, so tenants fund it indirectly. Commercial leases work differently: a net lease commonly requires the tenant to reimburse the property tax directly. For a landlord, property tax on a rental property is a deductible expense against the rental income it relates to.

No, in most cases. Rent from a property is property income rather than self-employment income, so it goes on the rental statement instead of the T2125 business form, it creates no CPP contributions, and it does not count as earned income for the child care expense deduction. Net rental income does count as earned income for RRSP room. Where you provide substantial services beyond a basic tenancy, the CRA may instead treat the activity as a business.
