Quick Definitions for Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Businesses Filing

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Businesses: Our Analysis

For cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses, the difference between an adequate and a strong filing is sector knowledge. Most financial services are GST/HST-exempt, which blocks input tax credits on overhead and makes cost recovery a planning exercise of its own. Everything is handled at a budget-friendly fixed price — the economical alternative to hourly billing.

What Our Financial Tax Services Service Includes

What does a tax consultant actually look for when a cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses file lands on the desk? Not the totals first — the structure. The sector shapes the return before a single figure is entered.

The first thing we verify on every engagement: A fiscal year-end cannot be changed by simply closing the books on a new date. Subsection 249.1(7) requires the CRA’s concurrence. The short transitional period is a tax year in its own right and needs its own return and its own statements.

From there, the file turns on a second question, and the rule behind it reads as follows. Capital cost allowance is permissive, not mandatory. A corporation can claim less than the maximum in a low-income year. It can leave the undepreciated capital cost in the pool for a year when the deduction is worth more, provided the schedule carries that decision forward consistently.

Send us the file. We will quote a fixed fee, do the work, and hand it back for your review — you pay when you are satisfied, not before. That confidence comes from the sector, not from salesmanship.

Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Businesses: the tax rules that actually apply

What Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Businesses need from an accountant is not what a generic small business needs. The financial services & insurance sector carries its own CRA scrutiny, its own deduction profile and its own filing calendar, and a file prepared without that context leaves money and defensibility on the table.

What the CRA looks at

Commission income reported on T4A slips is matched automatically against declared revenue, and a mismatch generates an assessment before any human reviews it.

A fintech straddling exempt financial services and taxable software must classify each revenue stream, and the wrong call compounds across every invoice.

What you can actually claim

Advisor practices buying a client list amortise it at 5% a year rather than deducting it, which materially changes the after-tax cost of the acquisition.

Licensing, errors-and-omissions coverage and regulatory filing costs are deductible; the cost of acquiring a book of business is capital recovered through Class 14.1.

The filing calendar that applies

Insurance intermediaries may face provincial premium tax obligations that sit entirely outside the income tax system and are easy to miss when expanding provinces.

Segregated fund and trust reporting deadlines fall well before the personal filing deadline, so client-facing advisors need their own calendar.

Where the planning value sits

Corporately owned life insurance interacts with the capital dividend account, and a properly structured policy can move value out of a corporation tax-free at death.

The lifetime capital gains exemption can apply to the sale of shares of an advisory corporation where the qualified small business corporation tests are met. Planning must start years ahead.

Our team works these rules year-round for Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Businesses, so the planning happens before year-end rather than being explained afterwards.

Case Study 1

$26,000 Credit Claim Filed And Accepted Without Adjustment — Financial Planning Practice, Red Deer

A financial planning practice in Red Deer, Alberta had never tested its work against the eligibility rules. The resulting $26,000 claim was accepted without adjustment.

A financial planning practice in Red Deer, Alberta assumed the credits did not apply to a business its size. Development and improvement work written off as ordinary overhead meant they had applied all along. We identified the qualifying activity and built the documentation to support it. Then we reassigned the asset classes on the CCA schedule and corrected the opening balances. $26,000 recovered. Because the eligibility analysis is on file, the same claim can be repeated each year with a fraction of the effort.

Case Study 2

Month-End Close Cut From 6 Weeks To 4 Days — Benefits Consultancy, Surrey

Closing the books at a benefits consultancy in Surrey, British Columbia took 6 weeks. The cause was industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged. It now takes 4 days.

The accounting file at a benefits consultancy in Surrey, British Columbia had a weak foundation. It was built on industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged. The year-end had taken 6 weeks each of the last three years. We documented the positions to the standard the CRA applies to this sector specifically. We also moved the reconciliations into the monthly cycle, so the year-end stopped being a rebuild. The file reconciles. Month-end closes in 4 days instead of 6 weeks, and the year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Case Study 3

$625,000 Sheltered By The Lifetime Capital Gains Exemption — Investment Advisory Firm, Toronto

An investment advisory firm in Toronto, Ontario was preparing to sell. However, no valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed disqualified the shares. Purification sheltered $625,000 under the exemption.

An investment advisory firm in Toronto, Ontario had an offer on the table and 14 months to close. The shares did not qualify for the capital gains exemption. No valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed was part of the reason. We purified the corporation so the shares met the qualifying tests. We rebuilt the chart of accounts around how a cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses business actually earns and spends. All of it was done well ahead of the closing date. The sale closed on schedule with $625,000 sheltered by the lifetime capital gains exemption across the shareholders.

Case Study 4

Remittance Schedule Corrected, $19,500 Refunded — Captive Insurance Manager, Victoria

Remittances at a captive insurance manager in Victoria, British Columbia were chronically late. It came down to sector deductions claimed on a general-business basis rather than the cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses rules. Fixing the schedule refunded $19,500.

Remittances at a captive insurance manager in Victoria, British Columbia were consistently late by a few days. That was enough to trigger penalties every quarter. Behind it sat sector deductions claimed on a general-business basis rather than the cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses rules. We aligned the reporting calendar with the sector’s own seasonal cycle rather than a generic year-end. Then we moved the remittance dates into a scheduled process rather than a monthly decision. Penalties stopped from the following remittance onwards, and $19,500 of overpaid instalments was refunded.

Case Study 5

6 Years Filed, $102,000 Removed From The Assessed Balance — Bookkeeping and Payroll Bureau, Halifax

6 years of returns were outstanding at a bookkeeping and payroll bureau in Halifax, Nova Scotia. That came on top of equipment and asset classes assigned by guesswork rather than the CCA schedule. Filing on real numbers removed $102,000 of assessed tax.

A bookkeeping and payroll bureau in Halifax, Nova Scotia had not filed for 6 years. The CRA had issued arbitrary assessments. The business was carrying equipment and asset classes assigned by guesswork rather than the CCA schedule. That came on top of a growing interest balance. We started with the oldest year and worked forward so each year's closing balances fed the next. We reviewed every sector-specific deduction against the current rules and claimed the ones that had been missed. We filed the years in sequence rather than all at once. Every year is now filed and assessed on actual figures. The notional assessments were vacated and $102,000 of the estimated balance came off, with a payment arrangement covering the rest.

Case Study 6

Remuneration Review Saved $30,500 Across Corporate And Personal Returns — Wealth Management Practice, Calgary

A remuneration review at a wealth management practice in Calgary, Alberta saved $30,500 across the corporate and personal returns. It found seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it.

Nothing was wrong at a wealth management practice in Calgary, Alberta. The filings were on time and accurate. What they were not was planned. Seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it had never been reviewed. We reassigned the asset classes on the CCA schedule and corrected the opening balances. We ran the numbers across both the corporate and personal returns, so the saving was real rather than deferred into someone else's hands. $30,500 came off the combined corporate and personal tax bill, and the structure holds for future years without further work.

What Clients Ask Us About Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Businesses

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

What records do cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses need to keep?

The CRA requires six years of books and records from the end of the tax year they relate to: invoices, receipts, bank statements, payroll records and contracts. Digital copies are acceptable provided they are legible and complete.

How do you handle payroll for cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses?

We run the cycle, remit source deductions on schedule, and issue T4s ahead of the February deadline. Late remittances draw a penalty of up to 10% and repeat lateness raises it to 20%, so timing is the whole game. See our payroll service.

Can you work with my existing bookkeeping software?

Yes. We work in QuickBooks, Xero, Wave, Sage, spreadsheets, and plain scanned documents. You are not required to migrate systems to become a client, and we never charge a conversion fee.

What if my cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses business operates in more than one province?

Multi-province operations allocate taxable income by permanent establishment and payroll, and sales tax rules differ by jurisdiction. We handle the allocation schedules and the differing GST, HST, PST and QST obligations in one engagement.

When should a cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses business register for GST/HST?

Registration becomes mandatory once taxable supplies pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, and the obligation starts almost immediately rather than at the next year-end. Registering voluntarily below that threshold is often worthwhile when you are buying equipment, because it makes the tax on those purchases recoverable.

How long does the CRA expect a cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses business to keep records?

Six years from the end of the tax year the records relate to. That covers invoices, receipts, bank statements, payroll records and the working papers behind the return. Records supporting the purchase of a capital asset must be kept six years past the year the asset is finally sold.

What happens if a cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses business files late?

The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles those figures. Interest compounds daily from the balance-due date regardless of when the return is filed.

Can a cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses business deduct vehicle costs?

Yes, in proportion to business use, and the logbook is what supports it. The CRA accepts a full-year log, or a three-month sample backed by a complete prior-year log. Travel between home and a regular place of work is personal; travel between work locations is business.

What does "Pay After Service" mean?

Our Pay After Service model means you review and approve all deliverables before making any payment. We prepare your returns or financial files, you review them, and only then do you pay. This ensures 100% satisfaction.

How does price matching work?

If you find a lower verified quote from another accounting firm in Canada for the same scope of services, we will match it immediately. Simply provide a verified quote.

How do I submit my tax documents?

We support completely secure digital uploads via our client portal, or you can email them to us. We support files from QuickBooks, Xero, Excel, and scan/photo documents.

How much of your work is with cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses clients specifically?

A small corporation still carries the full compliance set: T2, GST/HST, payroll, and the annual return with the incorporating jurisdiction. The annual corporate return is separate from the T2 and is the one most often forgotten, which can lead to administrative dissolution. We flag this early with every client it touches, because finding it out at filing time leaves you far fewer options than finding it out now.

Are there deductions or credits that cryptocurrency & blockchain businesses commonly overlook?

There is a widespread assumption here, and the actual position is worth stating plainly. An expense is deductible where it was incurred to earn income and is reasonable in the circumstances. The business-use portion must be supported, which for vehicles means a logbook. The CRA rarely argues that an expense category is wrong; it argues that the proportion claimed was never substantiated. If your current setup was built on the assumption instead of the rule, that is fixable — but sooner is better than later.

Most municipalities do not take credit cards for property tax directly. They accept pre-authorised debit, online or telephone banking, cheque, and in-person payment. Third-party payment processors will charge a property tax bill to a card for a service fee, which normally costs more than the rewards earned. The CRA works the same way for income tax and GST/HST: no direct card payment, but authorised third-party providers accept cards for a fee.

A real CRA agent will ask you to confirm identifying details, including your social insurance number, once you have called them or after they reach you about a known file. What the CRA does not do is demand your SIN, banking details or a payment over a call you were not expecting, threaten arrest, or ask for gift cards or crypto. If a call feels wrong, hang up and phone the CRA back on a number from canada.ca.

Different deductions, not different rules. Withholding follows the TD1 forms you filed, so a colleague claiming more credits, tuition or a disability amount has less tax taken off. Other causes are a different province of employment, a second job where each employer applies the basic personal amount, taxable benefits added to your pay, a higher salary reaching the next bracket, and pay-period timing. CPP and EI also stop at their annual maximums, which higher earners reach sooner.

Total income is measured before tax. On a T1 it is the sum of your income sources for the year, such as employment income from your T4, self-employment, investment, and pension amounts, added up before deductions and before any tax withheld. Tax withheld at source is a payment toward your final bill, not a reduction in income. Deductions take total income down to net income, and further deductions give taxable income, which the rates apply to.

Your municipality sets that, not the CRA. Most Canadian municipalities issue an interim bill and a final bill each year, each payable in one or more instalments, and many also offer a monthly pre-authorised plan spread across the year. If your mortgage lender pays the tax on your behalf, you contribute a portion with each mortgage payment instead. Your tax bill or your municipality's website lists the exact instalment dates for your property.

The lowest federal bracket applies to the first band of taxable income. Its upper limit is indexed to inflation each year, while the rate itself changes only when Parliament legislates a change, so check the CRA rate table for the year you are filing. Each province and territory adds its own lowest bracket on top, so the combined rate depends on where you lived on 31 December. The basic personal amount, a non-refundable credit, eliminates federal tax only for someone whose income is at or under that amount.
