Hubdoc Setup and Support Terms Worth Knowing

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Hubdoc Setup and Support: Our Analysis

Monthly reconciliation is what keeps input tax credits claimable — unmatched receipts are the first thing disallowed in a GST/HST review. Because the fee is fixed and cheap, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

Observations From Our Hubdoc Setup and Support Files

No two hubdoc setup and support files are identical, but the rules that govern them are stable. A tax specialist who works with Hubdoc Setup and Support weekly keeps returning to the same anchors, and they are set out below.

Before anything else, one rule sets the frame. Personal expenses run through a corporate account are shareholder benefits, taxable to the shareholder personally whether or not they were ever labelled as such.

Once that is settled, the next question answers itself less often than clients expect. Cash-basis records are not acceptable for a corporation. Income must be reported on the accrual basis, with receivables and payables recognised when they arise rather than when the money moves. Calendars matter more than most people expect in hubdoc setup and support, and this is the rule that proves it: Bank feeds are not a bookkeeping system. Auto-categorised transactions still need reconciliation to statements, because a duplicated feed entry is indistinguishable from a real expense on the face of the ledger.

None of this requires you to become an expert — that is what engaging a tax professional is for. What it does require is recognizing that hubdoc setup and support will reward preparation over improvisation. What you bring to the table determines how quickly the hubdoc setup and support work proceeds — start with the items below.

Our terms are the same for every engagement: a fixed fee agreed before work begins, a full review with you before filing, and payment only after the service is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions on Hubdoc Setup and Support

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Hubdoc Setup and Support cost in Canada?

Hubdoc Setup and Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Hubdoc Setup and Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Hubdoc Setup and Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Hubdoc Setup and Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Hubdoc Setup and Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Hubdoc Setup and Support services?

Our hubdoc setup and support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Hubdoc Setup and Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

Can I switch to your firm for hubdoc setup and support partway through the year?

A tax professional answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. Foreign-currency amounts have to be converted at the exchange rate for the day the transaction occurred. Applying one year-end rate to twelve months of purchases distorts the recorded cost and hides the exchange gain or loss on settlement. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

How long does hubdoc setup and support usually take from start to finish?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. Meals and entertainment are deductible at 50 percent of the lesser of the amount paid and a reasonable amount under subsection 67.1, and the recoverable share of the GST/HST on those costs is restricted in the same proportion, with the excess recaptured. Coding them at full value overstates both the deduction and the credit. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

Searched Questions About Hubdoc Setup and Support

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

You can pay through CRA My Business Account or My Payment, through your own financial institution's online banking by adding the CRA GST/HST payment as a payee under your business number, or by pre-authorised debit arranged in My Business Account. Third-party providers accept credit cards for a fee. Payment is due by the deadline for your reporting period, and filing the return does not by itself move the money, so schedule the two separately.

Make it routine rather than an April scramble. Record income and expenses monthly, keep receipts and statements for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, and check CRA My Account for slips, notices, balances and instalment reminders. Pay instalments when the CRA asks for them. Set aside a share of self-employment income as it arrives, and register for direct deposit. A mid-year review is when planning can still change the result.

A refund liability is the amount a business expects to pay back to customers for returns, rebates, price adjustments or unused credits, recognised when the sale is recorded rather than when the money goes out. Revenue is reported net of that estimate, and a separate asset is set up for goods expected to come back. Revisit the estimate each period end against actual return rates, and adjust the sales tax reported on refunded sales as well.

No. Revenue is income you have earned and belongs on the income statement, not among liabilities. Money taken before you deliver the goods or service is different: unearned or deferred revenue is a liability until you perform the work. Sales tax you collect is also a liability rather than revenue. Booking customer deposits straight to sales is a common error that overstates profit and distorts the figures on your GST/HST return.

Usually yes. Severance, retiring allowances, bonuses, back pay, commuted pensions and RRSP withdrawals are taxable in the year received, and the payer withholds at a flat lump-sum rate that may be higher or lower than your real marginal rate, so a refund or balance can appear at filing. A qualifying retroactive lump sum covering earlier years can be spread back over them on request. Amounts transferred directly to an RRSP defer the tax.

Largely by self-assessment. Employers withhold income tax, CPP and EI from each pay and send it to the CRA; people with other income pay quarterly instalments; then everyone files a return that reconciles the year into a refund or a balance owing. Businesses collect GST/HST from customers and remit it on their own schedule. The CRA administers federal tax and most provincial income tax, while Quebec collects its own through Revenu Quebec.

A transmitter number identifies whoever sends information returns, such as T4 or T5 slips, to the CRA electronically. Many filers never need one, because internet file transfer accepts a web access code tied to the business number on the return. If you transmit for several businesses or use software that demands the identifier, request it through the CRA's electronic services helpdesk. Start from the CRA's pages on filing information returns electronically, which set out what each return type requires.

Not for owing money. A balance is collected civilly through interest, garnishment, liens and set-off against benefits. Imprisonment is only possible for criminal offences such as tax evasion or making false statements, and that takes an investigation, a prosecution and a conviction in court. Filing late or making mistakes is not evasion. Correcting the record yourself, by amending returns or using the voluntary disclosures route, is treated far better than waiting to be found.

No GST/HST applies. Menstrual products, including pads, tampons, cups and liners, are zero-rated, so neither the federal GST of 5% for 2025 and 2026 nor the provincial part of the HST is charged on them. The provincial sales tax provinces generally exempt them as well, though each keeps its own exemption list. If a receipt shows tax on these items, ask the retailer to correct it and check the CRA's zero-rated guidance.

Owing tax does not disqualify you, though it can complicate approval. Lenders ask for filed returns and notices of assessment, and a self-employed applicant is usually assessed on the income reported there. An unpaid balance shows on the notice, and where the CRA has registered a lien against the property the lender will want it cleared first. Filed returns, a documented payment arrangement and a record of keeping to it all help. Requirements vary by lender.

Yes. The CRA runs a leads programme for reporting suspected tax cheating, and you can submit online, by phone or by mail, anonymously if you prefer. Give facts, names, dates and amounts where you have them, because the CRA cannot come back with questions if you stay anonymous. It will never tell you the outcome, since confidentiality rules cover the other taxpayer. A separate offshore informant programme can pay an award on large international cases.

Either of you can claim it, or you can split it between you, but the total claimed for one qualifying home cannot exceed the maximum allowed for that home, so there is no doubling up. It is usually simplest for the spouse with enough tax payable to claim the whole amount. You also must not have lived in a home you or your spouse owned during a defined look-back period; the window and the current amount are on CRA's home buyers' amount page.
