Payroll Audit Support: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. Remitter frequency follows average monthly withholding — new employers generally remit monthly by the 15th of the following month. Because the fee is fixed and low-cost, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

Practitioner’s Notes on Payroll Audit Support

The pattern in payroll audit support files repeats often enough that a tax preparation specialist can usually tell early on where a file will need work. What follows is that read, written down for Payroll Audit Support.

If a client remembers only one point from this page, it should be this one: Taxable benefits including employer-paid parking, personal use of a company vehicle and most gift cards must be reported on the T4 and carry CPP and, in some cases, EI.

The next point is the one a tax preparation specialist checks before quoting any timeline: Each employer withholds CPP and EI up to the annual maximum on its own account. An employee who changes employers mid-year, including a move between two related payroll accounts, is over-deducted, and the excess comes back only through the personal return. The documentation side matters just as much. Salary or a bonus accrued at year-end but not paid within 180 days of the corporation’s year-end is denied as a deduction until the year it is actually paid, under subsection 78(4). An accrual booked to reduce a tax bill and then left unpaid moves the deduction rather than creating one.

For you, the takeaway is less about memorizing rules and more about timing the conversation. Bringing a tax preparation specialist in early on payroll audit support means the rules shape the file instead of correcting it. Gather whatever records touch the numbers — statements, ledgers, prior-year filings — and we take it from there.

Start whenever suits you; the structure is already set. You will know the fixed fee before work begins, approve the file before it is filed, and pay only once the service is delivered.

Incentive Review Recovered $108,000 Across 6 Open Years — Seasonal Landscaping Employer, Ottawa

Case Study 3

Holding Structure Added, $68,000 Saved Annually — High-Turnover Restaurant, Halifax

Books Rebuilt From Source, $13,500 In Unclaimed Input Tax Found — Multi-Province Driver Fleet, Brampton

The ledger at a logistics operator with drivers in three provinces in Brampton, Ontario could not support its own filings because of an employee over-deducted for CPP and EI after being moved between two related payroll accounts mid-year. Rebuilding it surfaced $13,500 in unclaimed input tax.

Case Study 5

Second-Province Expansion Handled, $63,000 Of Cash Released — Mixed-Crew Construction Firm, Victoria

Payroll Audit Support Questions We Hear Most Often

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Payroll Audit Support cost in Canada?

Payroll Audit Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Payroll Audit Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Payroll Audit Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We are a cloud-based practice serving every province and territory, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Payroll Audit Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Payroll Audit Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Payroll Audit Support services?

Our payroll audit support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Payroll Audit Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What goes wrong most often when owners handle payroll audit support themselves?

You are asking the right question, and it has a real answer. Late payroll remittances draw a penalty of 3% to 10% depending on how late, doubling to 20% for a repeat failure with gross negligence in the same calendar year. What we add on top of that is the paperwork discipline that makes the answer stand up if anyone ever asks you to prove it.

What will you need from me to get payroll audit support started?

Our answer starts where the legislation starts. Remitter frequency follows average monthly withholding. A business that grows into the accelerated threshold keeps remitting monthly at its peril — the deadline moves before the CRA writes to say so. From there it is a matter of applying it to your year — and that application, not the rule itself, is where a tax specialist earns the fee.

People Also Ask About Payroll Audit Support

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

EI benefits are taxable income. Service Canada withholds income tax before each payment reaches you, and the total benefits plus the tax withheld appear on your T4E for the year. That withholding follows a basic calculation rather than your full marginal rate, so people who also worked during the year often end up with a balance owing at filing. Asking Service Canada to withhold more, or setting money aside yourself, avoids a surprise. Higher-income claimants can also have to repay part of their regular benefits through the return.

Not in the way a US employee can. Canadian employers must withhold based on the personal tax credits return you complete when hired, and claiming the credits you are entitled to there lowers the deduction. Where withholding will still exceed your real tax because of large RRSP contributions, support payments or deductible expenses, you can ask the CRA in writing to authorise reduced deductions at source. Otherwise the excess comes back as a refund after filing.

Salary or dividends, or a blend of both. A salary is deductible to the corporation, is reported on a T4, creates RRSP room, and needs a payroll account with CPP at 5.95% from each side for 2026. A dividend needs no payroll account but gives the company no deduction, and builds no CPP or RRSP room. Taking cash without recording either creates a shareholder loan that becomes taxable in your hands if it stays outstanding too long.

Payroll treats each cheque as though you earned that amount every period, so a bonus, overtime, retroactive raise or an extra shift makes the cheque look like a higher annual income and more tax comes off it. A change in pay frequency, a new TD1, or a taxable benefit added mid-year does the same. CPP and EI stop for the year once their maximums are reached, so take-home often rises later on. Your return reconciles the total.

Yes. Employers withhold federal and provincial income tax from every pay, along with CPP and EI. The tax amount depends on your gross pay, how often you are paid, and the personal tax credits return you filled in for your employer, so it is only an estimate of your yearly bill. For 2026, CPP is 5.95% on earnings between the $3,500 exemption and the $74,600 ceiling, and EI is $1.63 per $100 of insurable earnings.

No. Box 14 is employment income, and a retiring allowance is reported in its own boxes on the T4, split between the eligible portion that can be transferred to an RRSP and the non-eligible portion. Salary continuance is different: it is regular employment income and does sit in box 14. If a lump-sum severance shows up in box 14, ask the employer to check the coding, since it affects CPP, EI and any RRSP transfer.

Your employer withholds income tax, CPP and EI. For 2026, CPP is 5.95% on earnings between the $3,500 basic exemption and the $74,600 ceiling, plus CPP2 at 4% on earnings up to $85,000, and EI is $1.63 per $100 of insurable earnings up to $68,900. Income tax withheld depends on your pay, your province and the credits you claimed on the personal tax credits return given to your employer. Federal rates for 2026 start at 14%.

Payments for hosting a student are taxable where they exceed what you spend on that student's room, meals and utilities and the arrangement is run for profit. Where the fee only covers your costs, the CRA generally treats it as cost recovery with nothing to report and nothing to deduct. Keep a record of the fee and of what you spent, because the answer turns on those figures rather than on the label homestay.

Federally, no. Employer contributions to a private health services plan covering medical, dental and hospital care are not a taxable benefit, so they do not show up in your income. Quebec taxes them provincially, which is why a Quebec slip can show an amount the federal one does not. Premiums you pay yourself, including the employee share deducted from pay, can count as medical expenses on your T1. Group life and some wage-loss plans are treated differently.

The age amount is a non-refundable credit for people who reach the qualifying age by the end of the tax year. It is reduced once net income passes a set threshold and disappears above a higher one, so it is aimed at lower-income retirees. Any portion you cannot use, because your tax is already nil, can be transferred to a spouse or common-law partner. The amount and both thresholds are indexed yearly and appear on the federal schedule.

Controlled tips do. Amounts the restaurant collects and controls, such as a mandatory service charge or a pool the house allocates, run through the books as revenue and then as wage expense when paid out, and a mandatory service charge on a taxable meal is generally subject to GST/HST. Voluntary tips passed straight to staff are not the restaurant's revenue and no GST/HST applies. Keep the two streams separate in your bookkeeping.

Severance is not subject to a special higher rate of tax. A retiring allowance has tax withheld at flat lump-sum withholding rates that step up with the size of the payment, and because the full amount lands in a single year it can carry you into a higher bracket. The withholding is only an estimate. Everything is reconciled on your return, so tax taken off in excess comes back as a refund.
