Key Terms in Antique & Specialty Retailers Filing

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Antique & Specialty Retailers: Our Analysis

The tax file of antique & specialty retailers looks nothing like a generic small business return. Selling into BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec can create separate provincial sales tax registrations on top of GST/HST. Our sector team files antique & specialty retailers at low-cost flat rates with pay-after-service.

What the Paperwork Teaches Us About Antique & Specialty Retailers

Owners in the antique & specialty retailers sector tend to ask us the same handful of questions, in roughly the same order. That repetition is useful: it tells a tax consultant exactly where the sector's confusion lives, and these notes start there.

Start with the rule that decides most files: Accrued but unbilled revenue belongs in income in the year the work was performed. Deferring it to the invoice date understates taxable income and is a standard reassessment adjustment.

From there, the file turns on a second question, and the rule behind it reads as follows. Shareholder loan balances must be repaid within one year of the corporation’s following year-end. If they are not, the amount is included in the shareholder’s personal income under subsection 15(2).

What should you expect from us? A fee that does not move after quoting, a completed file you inspect before paying anything, and answers that come from sector repetition rather than a manual opened for the occasion.

Antique & Specialty Retailers: the tax rules that actually apply

Accounting for Antique & Specialty Retailers is a specialist job because the CRA treats this part of the e-commerce sector differently. These are the rules that actually change the number at the bottom of the return.

What the CRA looks at

Marketplace facilitator rules make platforms collect GST/HST on many sales, but a seller still needs its own registration where it holds inventory or exceeds the small-supplier threshold.

Inventory stored in a fulfilment warehouse can create a permanent establishment in that province, pulling the seller into provincial filing obligations it never intended.

What you can actually claim

Landed cost — freight, duty and brokerage — belongs in inventory rather than expensed on arrival, which shifts the deduction to the period the goods actually sell.

GST paid at the border on imported goods is recoverable as an input tax credit, but only by the importer of record. The customs paperwork therefore has to name the right party.

The filing calendar that applies

A seller crossing $30,000 in taxable supplies over four consecutive quarters must register for GST/HST effective almost immediately, not at the next year-end.

Foreign currency sales are translated at the transaction date, and the CRA expects a consistent method rather than a year-end average applied retroactively.

Where the planning value sits

US sales can create state-level economic nexus with no Canadian equivalent, so growth south of the border is a compliance decision before it is a tax one.

Writing down obsolete or unsellable stock to net realisable value is a legitimate deduction that most sellers take far too late.

This is the level of sector detail built into every fixed-fee engagement we run for Antique & Specialty Retailers, with payment due only after you have approved the work.

Case Study 1

$36,000 Cut From The Annual Tax Bill — Consumer Electronics Reseller, Burnaby

A consumer electronics reseller in Burnaby, British Columbia was filing correctly and still overpaying. The reason was a previous accountant with no experience of this sector. Restructuring the position cut $36,000 from the annual bill.

A consumer electronics reseller in Burnaby, British Columbia was compliant but paying more than it needed to. The prior year had been filed correctly. It still left a previous accountant with no experience of this sector on the table. We modelled the current position against the alternatives before changing anything. Then we rebuilt the chart of accounts around how an antique & specialty retailers business actually earns and spends. The change saved $36,000 in the first year and repeats annually. Nothing about the filings became more aggressive. The position is simply the one the rules already allowed.

Case Study 2

Audit Defence Closed In 6 Weeks, $143,000 Cleared — Shopify Store Shipping Nationwide, Victoria

A Shopify store shipping nationwide in Victoria, British Columbia was under review. The issue was sector deductions claimed on a general-business basis rather than the antique & specialty retailers rules. The file closed in 6 weeks with $143,000 of proposed tax cleared.

A Shopify store shipping nationwide in Victoria, British Columbia was selected for review. Sector deductions claimed on a general-business basis rather than the antique & specialty retailers rules had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on antique & specialty retailers accounting and tax came to $143,000. We aligned the reporting calendar with the sector’s own seasonal cycle rather than a generic year-end. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $143,000 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 3

Share Sale Restructured, $640,000 Less Tax On Closing — Handmade Goods Marketplace Seller, Guelph

Due diligence at a handmade goods marketplace seller in Guelph, Ontario surfaced no valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed. Restructuring the sale saved $640,000 against the original terms.

A handmade goods marketplace seller in Guelph, Ontario was preparing to sell. Due diligence surfaced no valuation on file to support the price the parties had agreed. That would have reduced the price or killed the deal outright. We cleaned up the historical file. We reviewed every sector-specific deduction against the current rules and claimed the ones that had been missed. Then we prepared the due-diligence package the buyer's advisers actually asked for. The deal closed at the agreed price. $640,000 of tax was saved against the structure originally proposed, with no post-closing adjustment.

Case Study 4

Holding Structure Added, $65,000 Saved Annually — Direct-To-Consumer Apparel Brand, Mississauga

A direct-to-consumer apparel brand in Mississauga, Ontario needed a holding structure. It had to deal with equipment and asset classes assigned by guesswork rather than the CCA schedule. The reorganisation was tax-neutral and removed $65,000 of annual exposure.

The structure at a direct-to-consumer apparel brand in Mississauga, Ontario needed fixing. The file was carrying equipment and asset classes assigned by guesswork rather than the CCA schedule. Every option for fixing it ran through a reorganisation that had to be done without triggering tax. We worked with the client's lawyer. Together, we reassigned the asset classes on the CCA schedule and corrected the opening balances. We also prepared the elections, resolutions and valuations the structure needed to stand up. The structure now matches the business. Annual saving of $65,000, and the reorganisation itself was tax-neutral.

Case Study 5

$87,000 Late-Filing Penalty Cancelled On Relief Application — Print-On-Demand Business, Surrey

A print-on-demand business in Surrey, British Columbia had already been penalised. The issue was industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged. A relief application cancelled $87,000 of that penalty.

A print-on-demand business in Surrey, British Columbia had already missed one deadline and was about to miss a second. Behind it sat industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged. A penalty of $87,000 was accruing. We split the work into what had to happen before the deadline and what could follow it. Then we documented the positions to the standard the CRA applies to this sector specifically. The outstanding return was accepted as filed, and the taxpayer relief application cancelled $87,000 of the penalty already assessed on the earlier year.

Case Study 6

Remittance Schedule Corrected, $90,000 Refunded — Pet Products Retailer, Brampton

Remittances at a pet products retailer in Brampton, Ontario were chronically late. It came down to seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it. Fixing the schedule refunded $90,000.

Remittances at a pet products retailer in Brampton, Ontario were consistently late by a few days. That was enough to trigger penalties every quarter. Behind it sat seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it. We rebuilt the chart of accounts around how an antique & specialty retailers business actually earns and spends. Then we moved the remittance dates into a scheduled process rather than a monthly decision. Penalties stopped from the following remittance onwards, and $90,000 of overpaid instalments was refunded.

Common Questions Before Starting Antique & Specialty Retailers Work

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

What happens if a antique & specialty retailers business files late?

The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month the return is late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles those figures. Interest compounds daily from the balance-due date regardless of when the return is filed.

Can a antique & specialty retailers business deduct vehicle costs?

Yes, in proportion to business use, and the logbook is what supports it. The CRA accepts a full-year log, or a three-month sample backed by a complete prior-year log. Travel between home and a regular place of work is personal; travel between work locations is business.

Should a antique & specialty retailers business incorporate?

Incorporation usually pays once profit consistently exceeds what the owner draws personally, because the retained amount is taxed at small business rates rather than personal rates. Where the entire profit is withdrawn each year, incorporation often costs more in filing and compliance than it saves.

What triggers a CRA audit for a antique & specialty retailers business?

Ratios that sit outside sector norms, repeated losses, large or round-numbered expense claims, and mismatches between filed slips and reported income. Most reviews are resolved on documentation alone, which is why contemporaneous records matter more than the size of any single claim.

How are employees and subcontractors treated differently for a antique & specialty retailers business?

The CRA looks at control, ownership of tools, chance of profit and risk of loss rather than what the contract is titled. Where a worker is reclassified as an employee, the unremitted CPP, EI and withholding land on the payer, together with penalties and interest.

What instalments does a antique & specialty retailers business have to pay?

Individuals pay quarterly instalments once net tax owing passes $3,000 in the current year and either of the two preceding years. Corporations generally pay monthly, with many small CCPCs eligible for quarterly instalments instead. Basing them on a current-year estimate avoids overpaying after a strong year.

What tax deductions are antique & specialty retailers businesses most likely to miss?

The recurring ones are capital cost allowance on equipment placed in service late in the year, the business-use portion of vehicle and home-office costs, and professional development. Each is defensible when documented at the time and difficult to defend when reconstructed later.

How much does accounting for antique & specialty retailers businesses cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and bookkeeping at $10 per month, quoted as a fixed fee before work begins. Sector complexity does not trigger a surcharge. Review the full price list.

What does "Pay After Service" mean?

Our Pay After Service model means you review and approve all deliverables before making any payment. We prepare your returns or financial files, you review them, and only then do you pay. This ensures 100% satisfaction.

How does price matching work?

If you find a lower verified quote from another accounting firm in Canada for the same scope of services, we will match it immediately. Simply provide a verified quote.

How do I submit my tax documents?

We support completely secure digital uploads via our client portal, or you can email them to us. We support files from QuickBooks, Xero, Excel, and scan/photo documents.

How is preparing a return for a antique & specialty retailers business different from a general business return?

You are asking the right question, and it has a real answer. A fiscal year-end cannot be changed by simply closing the books on a new date. Subsection 249.1(7) requires the CRA’s concurrence. The short transitional period is a tax year in its own right and needs its own return and its own statements. What we add on top of that is the paperwork discipline that makes the answer stand up if anyone ever asks you to prove it.

Do businesses in antique & specialty retailers need a different kind of bookkeeping setup?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. Capital cost allowance is permissive, not mandatory. A corporation can claim less than the maximum in a low-income year. It can leave the undepreciated capital cost in the pool for a year when the deduction is worth more, provided the schedule carries that decision forward consistently. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

What Canadians Search About Antique & Specialty Retailers

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Most municipalities do not take credit cards for property tax directly. They accept pre-authorised debit, online or telephone banking, cheque, and in-person payment. Third-party payment processors will charge a property tax bill to a card for a service fee, which normally costs more than the rewards earned. The CRA works the same way for income tax and GST/HST: no direct card payment, but authorised third-party providers accept cards for a fee.

Taxation is the compulsory collection of money by government to pay for public services. In Canada it operates at three levels: federal and provincial income and sales taxes, and municipal property taxes. Income tax is self-assessed, meaning you report your own income and claim your own deductions, and the CRA verifies afterwards through assessment and review. Rates are progressive, so later slices of income are taxed more heavily while the earlier slices stay at lower rates.

Service Canada issues the T4E, not your employer. The quickest route is My Service Canada Account, where the slip sits under tax information and can be printed. A paper copy also goes to the address on file, and the slip is loaded into CRA My Account, so tax software using Auto-fill my return can pull it in directly. If nothing appears, call Service Canada, and report the benefits on your return even while waiting for the slip.

The CRA does use text and email for limited purposes: one-time passcodes when you sign in, and notifications telling you that mail is waiting in your account. It does not text you a refund offer, a payment demand or a link asking for banking details, a SIN or a card number. Never tap a link in an unexpected message; open canada.ca yourself and sign in to My Account to see whether anything is actually outstanding.

Caller ID proves nothing either way. Genuine CRA calls can show a blocked or unfamiliar number, and scammers routinely spoof real CRA lines, toll-free prefixes and even local mobile numbers, so treat the display as no evidence at all. Verify instead: ask for the agent's name and office, hang up, and call back on a number published on canada.ca. Genuine files also show in My Account, and a real agent never demands immediate payment.

Not everyone owes income tax, though almost everyone touches the system. Income tax starts once taxable income passes your personal credits; the federal basic personal amount for 2026 is $16,452, tapering to $14,829 at higher net income. Filing still matters with nothing owing, because benefits and credits are calculated from the return. Sales tax, payroll contributions and fuel or tobacco taxes reach people who pay no income tax at all.
