A Short Glossary for Digital Marketplaces & Platforms Clients

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Digital Marketplaces & Platforms: Our Analysis

Digital Marketplaces & Platforms carry their own CRA profile, and generic bookkeeping misses it. For SaaS and digital products, GST/HST place-of-supply rules decide which rate applies to each subscriber, not where the company sits. We price the whole engagement as one pocket-friendly fixed fee, quoted before work begins.

Reading Between the Lines on Digital Marketplaces & Platforms

What does a tax practitioner actually look for when a digital marketplaces & platforms file lands on the desk? Not the totals first — the structure. The sector shapes the return before a single figure is entered.

The first thing we verify on every engagement: A fiscal year-end cannot be changed by simply closing the books on a new date. Subsection 249.1(7) requires the CRA’s concurrence. The short transitional period is a tax year in its own right and needs its own return and its own statements.

A related rule tends to get overlooked precisely because the first one draws all the attention: The CRA requires business records to be kept for six years from the end of the tax year they relate to, in a form that allows the return to be verified. Where records cannot support the return, the CRA is entitled to assess on its own estimate — and the burden of disproving that estimate falls on the taxpayer.

What should you expect from us? A fee that does not move after quoting, a completed file you inspect before paying anything, and answers that come from sector repetition rather than a manual opened for the occasion.

Digital Marketplaces & Platforms: the tax rules that actually apply

What Digital Marketplaces & Platforms need from an accountant is not what a generic small business needs. The technology sector carries its own CRA scrutiny, its own deduction profile and its own filing calendar, and a file prepared without that context leaves money and defensibility on the table.

What the CRA looks at

Contractor-versus-employee classification is the recurring exposure for engineering teams hired remotely; the payer carries the CPP and EI liability when the CRA reclassifies.

SR&ED claims live or die on contemporaneous records: the CRA expects project descriptions, time tracking and evidence of technological uncertainty written as the work happened, not reconstructed afterwards.

What you can actually claim

Stock option benefits are taxable to the employee, and the 50% deduction is capped at $200,000 of annual vesting for non-CCPC options. CCPC options defer the benefit until the shares are sold.

Federal SR&ED gives a CCPC a 35% refundable credit on the first $6 million of qualified expenditures (tax years beginning after 15 December 2024; $3 million before). Most provinces layer their own credit on top of that.

The filing calendar that applies

The T661 SR&ED claim must reach the CRA within 18 months of the fiscal year-end. That deadline cannot be extended, and a late claim is simply lost.

A company with employees crosses into accelerated payroll remittance as average monthly withholdings grow, and the schedule tightens without any notice from the CRA.

Where the planning value sits

Holding intellectual property in the operating company simplifies SR&ED but complicates a later share sale; separating it early is cheaper than restructuring under an offer.

Founder shares issued at incorporation, while the company is worth almost nothing, are what makes the lifetime capital gains exemption available on an eventual sale.

Our team works these rules year-round for Digital Marketplaces & Platforms, so the planning happens before year-end rather than being explained afterwards.

Case Study 1

Holding Structure Added, $50,000 Saved Annually — Fintech Startup, Vancouver

A fintech startup in Vancouver, British Columbia needed a holding structure. It had to deal with industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged. The reorganisation was tax-neutral and removed $50,000 of annual exposure.

The structure at a fintech startup in Vancouver, British Columbia needed fixing. The file was carrying industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged. Every option for fixing it ran through a reorganisation that had to be done without triggering tax. We worked with the client's lawyer. Together, we rebuilt the chart of accounts around how a digital marketplaces & platforms business actually earns and spends. We also prepared the elections, resolutions and valuations the structure needed to stand up. The structure now matches the business. Annual saving of $50,000, and the reorganisation itself was tax-neutral.

Case Study 2

$76,000 Late-Filing Penalty Cancelled On Relief Application — Data Analytics Consultancy, Saskatoon

A data analytics consultancy in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan had already been penalised. The issue was seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it. A relief application cancelled $76,000 of that penalty.

A data analytics consultancy in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan had already missed one deadline and was about to miss a second. Behind it sat seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it. A penalty of $76,000 was accruing. We split the work into what had to happen before the deadline and what could follow it. Then we reviewed every sector-specific deduction against the current rules and claimed the ones that had been missed. The outstanding return was accepted as filed, and the taxpayer relief application cancelled $76,000 of the penalty already assessed on the earlier year.

Case Study 3

$112,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — B2B SaaS Company, Windsor

A B2B SaaS company in Windsor, Ontario was profitable and permanently short of cash. Behind the gap sat a previous accountant with no experience of this sector. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $112,000.

A B2B SaaS company in Windsor, Ontario was profitable on paper and short of cash every month. A previous accountant with no experience of this sector explained most of the gap. We documented the positions to the standard the CRA applies to this sector specifically. We also built a thirteen-week cash view so tax payments stopped competing with payroll for the same dollars. $112,000 was released back into working capital. Remittances have been on time every period since, and the forecast shows the tax outflow before it lands.

Case Study 4

Growth Handled Without A Missed Filing, $67,000 Freed — Cybersecurity Firm, Mississauga

A cybersecurity firm in Mississauga, Ontario was scaling. The growth exposed sector deductions claimed on a general-business basis rather than the digital marketplaces & platforms rules. The back office was rebuilt to match, freeing $67,000.

A cybersecurity firm in Mississauga, Ontario was opening in a second province. That meant different filing obligations and a different payroll regime. Sector deductions claimed on a general-business basis rather than the digital marketplaces & platforms rules already sat in the file. We aligned the reporting calendar with the sector’s own seasonal cycle rather than a generic year-end. We then put monthly reporting in place. That let the owner see the cash effect of growth while there was still time to act on it. Growth was absorbed without a compliance failure. $67,000 of cash was released, and the monthly reporting now flags a problem while it is still small.

Case Study 5

Incentive Review Recovered $38,500 Across 7 Open Years — IT Managed-Services Provider, London

An incentive review at an IT managed-services provider in London, Ontario recovered $38,500 across 7 open years. It found sector incentives that had never been tested against digital marketplaces & platforms activity.

An incentive review at an IT managed-services provider in London, Ontario started from a simple question: what has never been claimed? The answer ran to 7 years. It was driven by sector incentives that had never been tested against digital marketplaces & platforms activity. We reassigned the asset classes on the CCA schedule and corrected the opening balances. We documented eligibility to the standard a reviewer would apply rather than the standard a claim form requires. The credits produced $38,500 across the open years. The tracking now in place means the following year's claim is documented as the work happens rather than reconstructed afterwards.

Case Study 6

Collections Halted And $94,000 Cut From A 6-Year Backlog — Digital Product Agency, Moncton

Collections had begun against a digital product agency in Moncton, New Brunswick over 6 years of unfiled returns. Bringing them current cut $94,000 from the balance.

By the time a digital product agency in Moncton, New Brunswick called, 6 years were outstanding. The CRA had assessed on estimates. Underneath it sat equipment and asset classes assigned by guesswork rather than the CCA schedule. We reconstructed the records year by year. We rebuilt the chart of accounts around how a digital marketplaces & platforms business actually earns and spends. Each filing replaced an arbitrary assessment with a real one. The account is current. Filing on real numbers rather than CRA estimates reduced the balance by $94,000, and a relief application addressed part of the accumulated interest.

Straight Answers on Digital Marketplaces & Platforms Filing

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

What tax deductions are digital marketplaces & platforms businesses most likely to miss?

The recurring ones are capital cost allowance on equipment placed in service late in the year, the business-use portion of vehicle and home-office costs, and professional development. Each is defensible when documented at the time and difficult to defend when reconstructed later.

How much does accounting for digital marketplaces & platforms businesses cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and bookkeeping at $10 per month, quoted as a fixed fee before work begins. Sector complexity does not trigger a surcharge. Review the full price list.

Do digital marketplaces & platforms businesses need to register for GST/HST?

Registration is mandatory once taxable revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive quarters. Registering voluntarily below that threshold is often worthwhile, because it lets you recover input tax credits on startup and equipment purchases.

Should I incorporate my digital marketplaces & platforms business?

Incorporation usually pays off once profit consistently exceeds what you draw personally, because retained earnings are taxed at the small business rate rather than your marginal rate. Below that point the added compliance cost often outweighs the benefit. We model both before you decide.

What records do digital marketplaces & platforms businesses need to keep?

The CRA requires six years of books and records from the end of the tax year they relate to: invoices, receipts, bank statements, payroll records and contracts. Digital copies are acceptable provided they are legible and complete.

How do you handle payroll for digital marketplaces & platforms businesses?

We run the cycle, remit source deductions on schedule, and issue T4s ahead of the February deadline. Late remittances draw a penalty of up to 10% and repeat lateness raises it to 20%, so timing is the whole game. See our payroll service.

Can you work with my existing bookkeeping software?

Yes. We work in QuickBooks, Xero, Wave, Sage, spreadsheets, and plain scanned documents. You are not required to migrate systems to become a client, and we never charge a conversion fee.

What if my digital marketplaces & platforms business operates in more than one province?

Multi-province operations allocate taxable income by permanent establishment and payroll, and sales tax rules differ by jurisdiction. We handle the allocation schedules and the differing GST, HST, PST and QST obligations in one engagement.

What does "Pay After Service" mean?

Our Pay After Service model means you review and approve all deliverables before making any payment. We prepare your returns or financial files, you review them, and only then do you pay. This ensures 100% satisfaction.

How does price matching work?

If you find a lower verified quote from another accounting firm in Canada for the same scope of services, we will match it immediately. Simply provide a verified quote.

How do I submit my tax documents?

We support completely secure digital uploads via our client portal, or you can email them to us. We support files from QuickBooks, Xero, Excel, and scan/photo documents.

What tax issues come up most often in the digital marketplaces & platforms sector?

You are asking the right question, and it has a real answer. Related-party transactions have to be recorded at fair market value. A below-market charge between connected companies invites an adjustment on both sides of the transaction. What we add on top of that is the paperwork discipline that makes the answer stand up if anyone ever asks you to prove it.

Do businesses in digital marketplaces & platforms need a different kind of bookkeeping setup?

Our answer starts where the legislation starts. Capital cost allowance is permissive, not mandatory. A corporation can claim less than the maximum in a low-income year. It can leave the undepreciated capital cost in the pool for a year when the deduction is worth more, provided the schedule carries that decision forward consistently. From there it is a matter of applying it to your year — and that application, not the rule itself, is where a tax consultant earns the fee.

What Canadians Search About Digital Marketplaces & Platforms

Most municipalities do not take credit cards for property tax directly. They accept pre-authorised debit, online or telephone banking, cheque, and in-person payment. Third-party payment processors will charge a property tax bill to a card for a service fee, which normally costs more than the rewards earned. The CRA works the same way for income tax and GST/HST: no direct card payment, but authorised third-party providers accept cards for a fee.

A write-off is simply a deductible expense. You subtract it from the income it helped earn, so the saving equals the expense multiplied by your marginal tax rate, not the full amount spent. To qualify, the cost must be incurred to earn business or employment income, be reasonable in amount, and be backed by a receipt. Purely personal costs never qualify, and mixed-use items such as a vehicle or a home office are split by business-use proportion.

Only if you are authorised first. The CRA will not discuss an account with anyone who is not on file as a representative, even a spouse or adult child. The taxpayer can add you online through My Account, or you can submit an AUT-01 with their signature. For someone who cannot sign, the CRA needs legal documents such as a power of attorney or estate paperwork. Authorisation can be limited to view-only access.

Not everyone owes income tax, though almost everyone touches the system. Income tax starts once taxable income passes your personal credits; the federal basic personal amount for 2026 is $16,452, tapering to $14,829 at higher net income. Filing still matters with nothing owing, because benefits and credits are calculated from the return. Sales tax, payroll contributions and fuel or tobacco taxes reach people who pay no income tax at all.

Selling a home is not automatically taxable, but every sale must be reported on your return. If it was your principal residence for all the years you owned it, the gain is usually fully exempt; otherwise the taxable portion is a capital gain, included at one-half (50%) for 2025 and 2026. What you do with the proceeds does not change the tax on the sale itself, though moving cash into a TFSA, RRSP or FHSA shelters future growth within your available room.

You owe a balance when the tax withheld or paid during the year came to less than your total tax for the year. Common causes are two employers each applying the basic personal amount, self-employment or rental income with no withholding at all, investment income, RRSP withdrawals taxed at a flat rate, and CPP or OAS with little tax taken off. For the 2025 tax year the balance was due 30 April 2026. Extra withholding or instalments stops it recurring.
