The Vocabulary Behind CRA Collections Assistance

T1 General

T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
CRA Collections Assistance: Our Analysis

The Voluntary Disclosures Program can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest — but only while the CRA has not yet contacted you. Because the fee is fixed and low-cost, the economics stay predictable whether your file is simple or messy.

Things We've Learned Doing CRA Collections Assistance Work

The pattern in cra collections assistance files repeats often enough that a tax specialist can usually tell early on where a file will need work. What follows is that read, written down for CRA Collections Assistance.

Everything in cra collections assistance hangs off a single anchor. Taxpayer relief applications can cancel penalties and interest arising from CRA delay, serious illness or a natural disaster. The CRA is limited to the ten prior calendar years.

Once that is settled, the next question answers itself less often than clients expect. Collections action can proceed while an objection is outstanding for GST/HST and payroll amounts. That is why a filed objection is not by itself protection against a bank freeze. A file is only as strong as what backs it up, which brings us to the next rule: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not explanations offered afterwards. An unsupported claim is simply disallowed, however correct it was.

Taken together, these rules explain why cra collections assistance can rarely be treated as a do-it-once-and-forget exercise. A tax specialist watches how they interact across your specific facts, which is something no checklist can do. To keep the engagement efficient, assemble these records before we begin.

When you are ready, the process is straightforward — we agree a fixed fee up front, prepare the work, walk you through it before filing, and you pay once the service is delivered.

CRA Collections Assistance Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert CRA Collections Assistance tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

$83,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Taxpayer Facing Collections, Halifax

A taxpayer with frozen bank accounts in Halifax, Nova Scotia was profitable and permanently short of cash. Behind the gap sat a confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $83,000.

A taxpayer with frozen bank accounts in Halifax, Nova Scotia was profitable on paper and short of cash every month. A confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed explained most of the gap. We requested the auditor’s working papers and report to see how the assessment had been built before answering any of it. We also built a thirteen-week cash view so tax payments stopped competing with payroll for the same dollars. $83,000 was released back into working capital. Remittances have been on time every period since, and the forecast shows the tax outflow before it lands.

Case Study 2

$93,000 Reassessment Reduced To Nil On Review — Corporation Under GST/HST Review, Vancouver

A $93,000 reassessment was proposed against a corporation under a GST/HST review in Vancouver, British Columbia. It followed a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. The documented response reduced it to nil.

A review notice arrived at a corporation under a GST/HST review in Vancouver, British Columbia, covering CRA collections assistance for two tax years. The auditor's working position was an adjustment of $93,000. It was driven by a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. Rather than negotiate, we rebuilt the record. We assembled the contemporaneous records, filed a structured response to each proposed adjustment with the supporting documents indexed, and had the proposal withdrawn. We then submitted a point-by-point response that answered each proposed adjustment with the document behind it. The auditor accepted the documented position and closed the review without adjustment, protecting $93,000 and leaving the prior filings undisturbed.

Case Study 3

$33,000 Of Arbitrary Assessments Vacated After 6 Years — Taxpayer Relief Applicant, Moncton

The CRA had assessed a taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Moncton, New Brunswick on estimates across 6 unfiled years. Real filings vacated $33,000 of that tax.

6 years of unfiled returns had turned into notional assessments at a taxpayer applying for relief from penalties and interest in Moncton, New Brunswick. Underneath lay a director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating. Collections had already started. We brought every outstanding return current, then negotiated a payment arrangement that stopped the collections action. We then filed every outstanding year in chronological order so the CRA could vacate the notional assessments cleanly. All 6 years were accepted as filed. $33,000 of arbitrarily assessed tax was vacated, collections action stopped, and the account is current for the first time in 6 years.

Case Study 4

Filed On Time From A Standing Start, $136,000 Penalty Avoided — Importer Under Audit, Burnaby

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Burnaby, British Columbia was 4 weeks from a deadline. The file also carried six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. Filing complete and on time avoided roughly $136,000 in penalties.

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Burnaby, British Columbia came to us 4 weeks before its filing deadline. The file came with six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. A late filing would have triggered a penalty of roughly $136,000 before interest. We worked backwards from the deadline. We traced each unexplained deposit to its source — loans, transfers between accounts, an insurance settlement — and reduced the net-worth assessment accordingly. We prioritised the items that actually gated the filing and deferred everything that did not. The return was filed on time and complete. The $136,000 penalty never arose, and the compliance calendar we set means the next deadline is scheduled rather than discovered.

Case Study 5

Remuneration Review Saved $18,500 Across Corporate And Personal Returns — Professional Under Lifestyle Audit, Ottawa

A remuneration review at a professional under a lifestyle audit in Ottawa, Ontario saved $18,500 across the corporate and personal returns. It found a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled.

Nothing was wrong at a professional under a lifestyle audit in Ottawa, Ontario. The filings were on time and accurate. What they were not was planned. A proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled had never been reviewed. We filed the disclosure through the Voluntary Disclosures Program before contact, which removed the gross-negligence penalty entirely. We ran the numbers across both the corporate and personal returns, so the saving was real rather than deferred into someone else's hands. $18,500 came off the combined corporate and personal tax bill, and the structure holds for future years without further work.

Case Study 6

Incentive Review Recovered $103,000 Across 4 Open Years — Contractor Facing Reassessment, Guelph

An incentive review at a contractor facing a proposed reassessment in Guelph, Ontario recovered $103,000 across 4 open years. It found a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds.

An incentive review at a contractor facing a proposed reassessment in Guelph, Ontario started from a simple question: what has never been claimed? The answer ran to 4 years. It was driven by a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. We answered each query in writing with an indexed document package, so the file showed exactly what the auditor had received and on what date. We documented eligibility to the standard a reviewer would apply rather than the standard a claim form requires. The credits produced $103,000 across the open years. The tracking now in place means the following year's claim is documented as the work happens rather than reconstructed afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions on CRA Collections Assistance Filing

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does CRA Collections Assistance cost in Canada?

CRA Collections Assistance starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for CRA Collections Assistance?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does CRA Collections Assistance take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for CRA Collections Assistance?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes CRA Collections Assistance different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in CRA Collections Assistance services?

Our cra collections assistance services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with CRA Collections Assistance services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

Is cra collections assistance something I can catch up on if I have fallen behind?

The short answer comes straight from our working notes: A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the date of the notice of assessment. Individuals can instead object up to one year after the filing due date if that is later; corporations have only the 90 days. Any taxpayer who misses the deadline can apply for an extension within the following year. How that plays out on your file depends on the specifics, which is exactly what the engagement is for.

What information will you ask me for once the cra collections assistance work is underway?

In our files, this is the deciding factor: The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay. A tax professional applies it to your numbers before submission.

More CRA Collections Assistance Questions Canadians Ask

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Sign in to My Account and open the sections for filed returns and notices, where past returns, notices of assessment, slips and carry-forward amounts can be viewed, printed or saved. Without online access, ask the CRA by phone or in writing at the tax centre shown on your notice, or ask whoever prepared the return for their copy. Keep your own records six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to.

Yes. A prior-year return can be filed at any time, and electronic filing stays open for several past years, so a 2024 return usually still goes through software rather than on paper. If a balance is owing, the late-filing penalty has already run to its twelve-month maximum and interest is still accumulating daily, so there is nothing to gain from waiting. If you cannot pay in full, file anyway and then arrange payment, because the penalty is tied to filing rather than paying.

Two different things are often called an exemption. Exempt supplies - most health care, education, child care, financial services and long-term residential rent - carry no GST/HST, and the supplier cannot claim input tax credits on related costs. Zero-rated supplies such as basic groceries, prescription drugs and exports are taxed at 0% but input tax credits are still available. Separately, a small supplier under $30,000 of taxable revenue need not register or charge tax.

A review is not an audit. The CRA asks for receipts or documents supporting a claim, gives a date to respond, then either accepts the return as filed or issues a reassessment. Timing depends on the type of review and how fast complete documents arrive; sending everything requested in one package is the fastest route. Track progress in CRA My Account, where the letter and the outcome both appear.

For your own tax information, ask for a personal information request through the federal ATIP online portal, or submit the government's request form to the CRA's access to information office. Name the years and the type of record - notices of assessment, audit working papers, collections notes - because a narrow request is answered faster. Check CRA My Account first: slips, notices and account balances are already there at no cost.

It is a municipal notice showing the property address and roll number, the assessed value used for the year, the municipal rate applied to that value, a separate education or school portion, any local levies for services such as waste or transit, and the instalment due dates. Most bills show the prior year for comparison. Assessed value comes from the provincial assessment body, so value disputes go there while billing questions go to the municipality.

No. Quebec never joined the HST. The 5% GST applies there alongside a separate Quebec sales tax of 9.975%, charged on the pre-GST price, giving a combined 14.975%. Revenu Quebec administers both taxes for most businesses, so registration, returns and remittances usually go through it rather than the CRA. Selling into Quebec from another province can create a QST registration duty of its own, separate from your GST/HST account.

Yes. Tattooing is a taxable service, so GST/HST applies at the rate where the studio operates: 5% GST alone in Alberta, 13% HST in Ontario, and 14.975% combined in Quebec, where QST applies to services broadly. The provinces with a separate PST tax only listed services, so check the provincial bulletin. An artist under the $30,000 small-supplier threshold need not register or charge tax at all.

No single figure fits, because your province and your credits move the result as much as the salary does. Canada taxes in brackets, so only the income above each threshold attracts the next rate up; federal rates for 2026 begin at 14% and top out at 33%, with provincial rates added on. CPP and EI also come off employment pay. Enter the exact salary and province in the CRA's payroll deductions online calculator for a dependable number.

Treatment turns on whether the activity is investing or a business. Occasional trades in gold, oil or a commodity ETF held for appreciation are usually capital, so one-half of the gain is taxable for 2025 and 2026. Frequent, leveraged, short-horizon trading, or trading tied to your own business, is more likely fully taxable business income, with losses fully deductible. Physical bullion sales, futures and hedges each have their own treatment, so document your intention from the start.

Several taxes stack on a litre: a federal excise tax on gasoline, a provincial fuel tax that varies by province, a local transit levy in some regions, any carbon levy that applies there, and GST or HST charged on the total, so sales tax is calculated on the other taxes as well. The share of the pump price that is tax therefore depends on your province and on the day's crude and refining costs. Each province publishes its own fuel tax rate.

Your T5 comes from the bank, credit union or payer that paid the investment income, so ask the issuer first. Copies the CRA has received also appear under tax information slips in My Account, usually once the issuer has filed them. If a slip never arrives, report the income from your own statements rather than leaving it off, and the CRA will match its own copy when the return is assessed.
