ROE Correction and Reissue: Our Analysis

A record of employment is due within five calendar days of an interruption of earnings for paper filers, and Service Canada reconciles it against payroll. Late payroll remittances draw penalties of 3% to 10%, doubling to 20% for a repeat failure with gross negligence in the same calendar year. We quote roe correction and reissue as one affordable fixed price — the budget-friendly alternative to hourly billing.

ROE Correction and Reissue: Notes From Our Practice

There is a version of roe correction and reissue that runs smoothly and a version that turns into correspondence. The difference is rarely luck; it comes down to details any tax expert handling these files weekly learns to check first.

If you remember one thing from this page, make it this: Source deductions are held in trust for the Crown. Directors can be assessed personally for unremitted amounts, and that liability survives the corporation.

Right behind it comes a rule owners rarely hear about until it bites: Remitter frequency follows average monthly withholding. A business that grows into the accelerated threshold keeps remitting monthly at its peril. The deadline moves before the CRA writes to say so. The third rule is where the real exposure hides. Late payroll remittances draw a penalty of 3% to 10% depending on how late. The penalty doubles to 20% for a repeat failure with gross negligence in the same calendar year.

What this means for you: the value in roe correction and reissue is not the filing itself, it is having a tax expert apply these rules to your numbers before anything is submitted. What you bring to the table determines how quickly the roe correction and reissue work proceeds — start with the items below.

The fee is fixed and agreed before any work starts, you review every figure, and payment happens only after the work is done.

ROE Correction and Reissue Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert ROE Correction and Reissue tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Reorganisation Completed Tax-Deferred, $67,000 Saved Each Year — Company-Vehicle Employer, Vancouver

An employer providing company vehicles in Vancouver, British Columbia had outgrown its structure. The visible cost was remittances still going out monthly after the business had moved to the accelerated threshold. The reorganisation completed tax-deferred and saves $67,000 a year.

An employer providing company vehicles in Vancouver, British Columbia had outgrown the structure it started with. Remittances still going out monthly after the business had moved to the accelerated threshold was the immediate problem. The longer-term one was that the structure blocked the next step. We mapped the current structure and modelled the target. Then we moved the account to the correct remitter frequency and caught up the arrears. We filed a taxpayer relief request that cancelled the bulk of the penalty. The tax-deferred elections were filed on time and the supporting valuations documented. The reorganisation completed without triggering tax, and the new structure saves approximately $67,000 a year while removing the exposure the old one carried.

Case Study 2

9-Week Turnaround Beat The Deadline And Saved $127,000 — Higher-Frequency Remitter, Lethbridge

A 9-week rebuild at an employer whose remittance frequency moved up a threshold in Lethbridge, Alberta got the filing in with 16 days to spare. That avoided $127,000 in penalties.

An employer whose remittance frequency moved up a threshold in Lethbridge, Alberta was weeks away from the deadline for ROE correction and reissue. Behind that sat a director facing a personal assessment for unremitted source deductions. The exposure if the date slipped was around $127,000. We filed the outstanding slips and summary and requested relief on the per-slip penalty with the reasons documented in writing. The filing went in complete rather than provisional, so there was no amended return to follow. Filed with 16 days to spare. $127,000 in late-filing penalties avoided, and the working papers are ready for the following year.

Case Study 3

Remittance Schedule Corrected, $82,000 Refunded — Contractor-Paid Clinic, Barrie

Remittances at a clinic paying its associates as contractors in Barrie, Ontario were chronically late. It came down to long-term contractors who met every test for employment. Fixing the schedule refunded $82,000.

Remittances at a clinic paying its associates as contractors in Barrie, Ontario were consistently late by a few days. That was enough to trigger penalties every quarter. Behind it sat long-term contractors who met every test for employment. We paid the accrued bonus inside the 180-day window and kept the deduction in the year it was accrued. Then we moved the remittance dates into a scheduled process rather than a monthly decision. Penalties stopped from the following remittance onwards, and $82,000 of overpaid instalments was refunded.

Case Study 4

Scaled To 82 Staff With $53,000 Of Working Capital Freed — Multi-Province Driver Fleet, Victoria

Growth at a logistics operator with drivers in three provinces in Victoria, British Columbia had outrun the back office. A bonus accrued to bring the year-end tax bill down and still unpaid more than a year later broke first. Headcount reached 82 with $53,000 of cash freed.

A logistics operator with drivers in three provinces in Victoria, British Columbia was growing fast, with headcount reaching 82 in eighteen months. The back office had not kept up. A bonus accrued to bring the year-end tax bill down and still unpaid more than a year later was the first thing to break. We reconstructed vehicle logbooks, calculated the standby charge and operating benefit properly, and amended the affected T4s. We built the compliance calendar for the size the business was becoming rather than the size it had been. The business reached 82 staff with no missed remittance and no late filing. $53,000 of working capital was freed in the process.

Case Study 5

Incentive Review Recovered $42,000 Across 7 Open Years — Dental Practice, Regina

An incentive review at a dental practice in Regina, Saskatchewan recovered $42,000 across 7 open years. It found remittances still going out monthly after the business had moved to the accelerated threshold.

An incentive review at a dental practice in Regina, Saskatchewan started from a simple question: what has never been claimed? The answer ran to 7 years. It was driven by remittances still going out monthly after the business had moved to the accelerated threshold. We reviewed each contractor against the CRA’s control and integration tests and converted those who met the employment tests. We priced the transition before it was forced by a ruling. We documented eligibility to the standard a reviewer would apply rather than the standard a claim form requires. The credits produced $42,000 across the open years. The tracking now in place means the following year's claim is documented as the work happens rather than reconstructed afterwards.

Case Study 6

$25,000 Of Arbitrary Assessments Vacated After 5 Years — Seasonal Landscaping Employer, London

The CRA had assessed a landscaping company with seasonal staff in London, Ontario on estimates across 5 unfiled years. Real filings vacated $25,000 of that tax.

5 years of unfiled returns had turned into notional assessments at a landscaping company with seasonal staff in London, Ontario. Underneath lay an employee over-deducted for CPP and EI after being moved between two related payroll accounts mid-year. Collections had already started. We wrote each pay code against its income tax, CPP and EI treatment. That way, a new benefit could not reach the payroll without a decision on how it was withheld. We then filed every outstanding year in chronological order so the CRA could vacate the notional assessments cleanly. All 5 years were accepted as filed. $25,000 of arbitrarily assessed tax was vacated, collections action stopped, and the account is current for the first time in 5 years.

Questions ROE Correction and Reissue Clients Ask, With Our Answers

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does ROE Correction and Reissue cost in Canada?

ROE Correction and Reissue starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for ROE Correction and Reissue?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does ROE Correction and Reissue take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for ROE Correction and Reissue?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes ROE Correction and Reissue different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in ROE Correction and Reissue services?

Our roe correction and reissue services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with ROE Correction and Reissue services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What should I look for when choosing a provider for roe correction and reissue?

Our answer starts where the legislation starts. Late payroll remittances draw a penalty of 3% to 10% depending on how late. The penalty doubles to 20% for a repeat failure with gross negligence in the same calendar year. From there it is a matter of applying it to your year — and that application, not the rule itself, is where a tax advisor earns the fee.

What information will you ask me for once the roe correction and reissue work is underway?

You are asking the right question, and it has a real answer. Remitter frequency follows average monthly withholding. A business that grows into the accelerated threshold keeps remitting monthly at its peril. The deadline moves before the CRA writes to say so. What we add on top of that is the paperwork discipline that makes the answer stand up if anyone ever asks you to prove it.

Commonly Searched ROE Correction and Reissue Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Your employer withholds federal and Ontario income tax using the pay period, your annual rate of pay and the claim codes from the TD1 forms you signed, then adds CPP contributions and EI premiums until the yearly maximums are reached. Because the tax portion follows brackets, the percentage held back rises as pay rises. For an exact figure, run your gross pay through the CRA's Payroll Deductions Online Calculator, which applies the current year's tables.

Yes. Severance is taxable in the year you receive it, and the employer withholds tax before paying it out. Amounts paid as salary continuance are taxed like regular employment income. A single lump sum has a flat withholding rate applied, which is only a prepayment against the tax finally calculated on your return, so a balance can still be owing. Part of a retiring allowance may qualify for a direct transfer to an RRSP, which defers the tax.

Your employer projects your pay over the full year, applies the federal brackets to that annualised figure, subtracts the credits you claimed on your TD1 forms, and withholds a proportional share each pay period. The same is done for your province, so one deduction line reflects both. Employers use the CRA payroll deductions calculator or its published tables. Where large deductions mean too much is being withheld, Form T1213 can reduce it; processing takes several weeks, so the request should go in during the autumn before the year it is meant to apply to.

A flat monthly cash allowance for a phone is taxable employment income and appears on the T4. If the employer instead pays the carrier directly, or reimburses the business portion of a bill on receipts, and the plan is reasonable and mainly for work, there is normally no taxable benefit; personal use of a basic plan the employer already pays for is generally accepted. Keep records showing the business purpose.

There is no single CRA fax number. Fax lines belong to particular offices and programs, so the only reliable number is the one printed on the letter you are answering. Faxing without that reference risks your documents landing in the wrong queue. Submitting them through My Account, My Business Account or Represent a Client is faster and gives you a confirmation, which a fax does not.

Lottery and most gambling winnings, gifts and inheritances received, the Canada Child Benefit, the GST/HST credit, most life insurance death benefits, growth and withdrawals inside a TFSA, and child support is not taxable to the recipient where the order or written agreement falls under the current rules, though support under an older order can still be both taxable to the recipient and deductible to the payer, so confirm the date and terms of your order. Strike pay and most personal injury awards also sit outside income. Everything else is presumed taxable, including tips, side income and foreign income, whether or not a slip was issued for it.

A transmitter number identifies whoever sends information returns, such as T4 or T5 slips, to the CRA electronically. Many filers never need one, because internet file transfer accepts a web access code tied to the business number on the return. If you transmit for several businesses or use software that demands the identifier, request it through the CRA's electronic services helpdesk. Start from the CRA's pages on filing information returns electronically, which set out what each return type requires.

Yes, indirectly. Provincial assessment authorities value a home from its characteristics, including lot size, living area, age, construction quality, bedrooms and bathrooms, and recent sales of comparable homes nearby. Your municipality then multiplies that assessed value by its rate. So a bigger lot or more finished square footage generally means a higher assessment and a higher bill, while bedroom count alone matters less than total area. Your assessment notice lists the details on record.

There is no general rebate cheque. The closest thing is refundable credits, and you only get them by filing. The GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit, the Canada workers benefit and provincial credits are all calculated from your assessed return. One-off relief payments are announced from time to time, so check the CRA's benefits and credits page for what applies to the current year. Filing on time keeps payments from being interrupted.

For a return filed online the CRA's service standard is about two weeks from filing to refund, and the money normally moves within days of the notice of assessment when direct deposit is set up. A non-resident return can take up to sixteen weeks. If the notice shows a refund but nothing has arrived, confirm your deposit details in My Account and check whether the amount was applied against another balance you owe.

Toronto's municipal land transfer tax charges 2.5% on the portion between $2,000,000 and $3,000,000, then graduated rates City Council set on 17 December 2025, in force for registrations from 1 April 2026: 4.40% from $3,000,000 to $4,000,000, 5.45% to $5,000,000, 6.50% to $10,000,000, 7.55% to $20,000,000 and 8.60% above that. Ontario's provincial tax applies on top. Check the City's MLTT rates and fees page.

Yes, in two different ways. You can contribute severance to an RRSP like any other cash and claim the deduction to offset the income, limited by your available contribution room. Separately, the eligible portion of a retiring allowance can be transferred directly to an RRSP without using contribution room and without tax withheld at source, and the employer works out that eligible portion from your years of service under the historic transfer rules. Ask the employer to split the payment accordingly before the agreement is signed.
