Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support: Our Analysis

CRA reviews are won on documentation: every figure filed should trace to a source document, and deadlines — 90 days for an objection — are unforgiving. A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the notice of assessment, and individuals have a further year to apply for an extension. Our cryptocurrency tax audit support engagement is priced as a affordable flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

What a Tax Advisor Checks First in Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support

Good cryptocurrency tax audit support work is mostly about sequencing: which questions to settle before which. These notes lay out the sequence a tax advisor follows on Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support engagements.

Everything in cryptocurrency tax audit support hangs off a single anchor. The normal reassessment period runs three years from the original notice of assessment for an individual or a CCPC and four years for other corporations. A waiver signed at an auditor’s request removes that limit for the issue it describes. It stays open until it is revoked.

It would be simpler if the story ended there, but a second rule enters almost immediately. Taxpayer relief applications can cancel penalties and interest arising from CRA delay, serious illness or a natural disaster. The CRA is limited to the ten prior calendar years. The final point is less about opportunity and more about what happens when a file is challenged: Collections action can proceed while an objection is outstanding for GST/HST and payroll amounts. That is why a filed objection is not by itself protection against a bank freeze.

The practical upshot is simple: every one of these rules has a version that helps you and a version that costs you, and which one applies depends on choices made before filing. That is precisely the ground a tax advisor covers. To move quickly, have your ledger exports, bank statements and prior filings ready when we start.

The fee is fixed and agreed before any work starts, you review every figure, and payment happens only after the work is done.

$67,000 Proposed Adjustment Withdrawn In Full — Restaurant Under Net-Worth Audit, Winnipeg

A restaurant under a net-worth audit in Winnipeg, Manitoba faced a $67,000 proposed reassessment. It came after an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for. We rebuilt the documentation and the adjustment was withdrawn in full.

A restaurant under a net-worth audit in Winnipeg, Manitoba received a proposal letter opening a review of cryptocurrency tax audit support. The CRA had identified an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for. It proposed an adjustment of $67,000, with 30 days to respond. We treated the response as an evidence exercise rather than an argument. We answered each query in writing with an indexed document package, so the file showed exactly what the auditor had received and on what date. We then indexed every supporting document against the specific line the auditor had questioned. The proposed adjustment was withdrawn in full — all $67,000 of it. The file closed in 11 weeks with no change to the assessed amounts and no penalty.

Case Study 2

$75,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Long-Term Non-Filer, Brampton

A taxpayer with eight years of unfiled returns in Brampton, Ontario was profitable and permanently short of cash. Behind the gap sat a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $75,000.

A taxpayer with eight years of unfiled returns in Brampton, Ontario was profitable on paper and short of cash every month. A net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds explained most of the gap. We kept the waiver narrowed to the issue actually under review and let the remaining years close on the normal reassessment period. We also built a thirteen-week cash view so tax payments stopped competing with payroll for the same dollars. $75,000 was released back into working capital. Remittances have been on time every period since, and the forecast shows the tax outflow before it lands.

Case Study 3

$88,000 Of Penalties And Interest Cancelled On Relief — Director Facing Assessment, Barrie

A business owner with a director liability assessment in Barrie, Ontario was carrying $88,000 of penalties and interest. The charges arose from a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. A relief application cancelled that amount.

An assessment of $88,000 landed at a business owner with a director liability assessment in Barrie, Ontario following a desk review. It turned on a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled. The auditor had not seen the records behind it. We filed the Tax Court appeal inside the window and resolved the remaining adjustments before a hearing date was needed. We then set out the legislative basis for the position alongside the documents supporting it. $88,000 of penalties and interest was cancelled under the taxpayer relief provisions, and the underlying assessment was adjusted to match the filed position.

Case Study 4

Share Sale Restructured, $785,000 Less Tax On Closing — Employer Under Payroll Review, Mississauga

Due diligence at a company facing a payroll trust examination in Mississauga, Ontario surfaced passive assets sitting inside the operating company, disqualifying the shares. Restructuring the sale saved $785,000 against the original terms.

A company facing a payroll trust examination in Mississauga, Ontario was preparing to sell. Due diligence surfaced passive assets sitting inside the operating company, disqualifying the shares. That would have reduced the price or killed the deal outright. We cleaned up the historical file. We requested the auditor’s working papers and report to see how the assessment had been built before answering any of it. Then we prepared the due-diligence package the buyer's advisers actually asked for. The deal closed at the agreed price. $785,000 of tax was saved against the structure originally proposed, with no post-closing adjustment.

Case Study 5

Growth Handled Without A Missed Filing, $100,000 Freed — Family Business Under Review, Saskatoon

A family business under a related-party review in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was scaling. The growth exposed a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. The back office was rebuilt to match, freeing $100,000.

A family business under a related-party review in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was opening in a second province. That meant different filing obligations and a different payroll regime. A waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date already sat in the file. We assembled the contemporaneous records, filed a structured response to each proposed adjustment with the supporting documents indexed, and had the proposal withdrawn. We then put monthly reporting in place. That let the owner see the cash effect of growth while there was still time to act on it. Growth was absorbed without a compliance failure. $100,000 of cash was released, and the monthly reporting now flags a problem while it is still small.

Case Study 6

25 Months Reconciled And $11,000 Of Input Tax Recovered — Late-Objection Taxpayer, Victoria

25 months of records at a taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Victoria, British Columbia had never been reconciled. That left a director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating. Rebuilding recovered $11,000.

Nothing reconciled at a taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Victoria, British Columbia. Every filing started with 25 months of cleanup. The file was carrying a director liability assessment for a corporation that had already stopped operating. We rebuilt from source rather than correcting on top of the existing file. We brought every outstanding return current, then negotiated a payment arrangement that stopped the collections action. Then we set the routine that keeps it clean. 25 months reconciled to the bank. The close now takes 4 days, and $11,000 of previously unclaimable input tax was recovered in the process.

Before You Call: Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support cost in Canada?

Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support services?

Our cryptocurrency tax audit support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

How do I know if my business actually needs cryptocurrency tax audit support?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. Collections action can proceed while an objection is outstanding for GST/HST and payroll amounts. That is why a filed objection is not by itself protection against a bank freeze. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

What should I look for when choosing a provider for cryptocurrency tax audit support?

A tax preparation specialist answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. Taxpayer relief applications can cancel penalties and interest arising from CRA delay, serious illness or a natural disaster. The CRA is limited to the ten prior calendar years. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

What Canadians Search About Cryptocurrency Tax Audit Support

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Work out the tax you actually owe for the year, then compare it with what has already been paid. Total your income, subtract deductions to reach taxable income, apply the federal and provincial brackets, take off your credits, and set the result against the tax withheld on your T4 and other slips plus any instalments. If more was withheld than you owe, the difference is your refund. Tax software approved for NETFILE runs the same arithmetic once your slips are entered.

Yes, the CRA does telephone people, usually about a balance owing, a missing return, an audit or to verify information, and calls can come from many different numbers, so caller ID proves nothing either way. A real agent never demands payment by gift card, cryptocurrency or e-transfer, never threatens immediate arrest or deportation, and never asks for a password. If a call feels wrong, hang up, check your balance and mail in My Account, then call back using a number from canada.ca.

Yes. Nothing blocks filing a very late personal return, and the CRA will process a 2015 T1 that was never filed. Expect interest and a late-filing penalty on any balance owing. A refund is a different matter: the CRA's power to issue one for a year that old runs out, so read the CRA taxpayer relief page before counting on money back. Filing still matters for benefit entitlement, and unfiled years can bring an arbitrary assessment.

No. Filing and paying are legal obligations, not choices. A return is required if you have tax payable, and also whenever the CRA asks you to file. Filing late with a balance owing brings a late-filing penalty that grows for each month the return is outstanding, plus compound interest on the balance. Prolonged non-filing can end in an arbitrary assessment, a wage garnishment or a lien. If you cannot pay, still file on time and arrange payment terms.

Taxpayer information is anything the CRA holds that came from or was prepared about your tax affairs: returns, slips, assessments, balances and correspondence. The Income Tax Act binds the CRA to keep it confidential, so it cannot be released to a spouse, an accountant or a lender without your authorisation. You give that authorisation through My Account or a signed AUT-01. Sharing between the CRA and other government programs happens only where the law allows it.

Line 43700 is total income tax deducted, so you do not calculate it - you copy it. Add up the income tax withheld shown on every slip you received for the year: T4 employment slips, T4A, pension and benefit slips, T5 and other investment slips, and any tax withheld on a lump-sum payment. Enter the total, keep the slips, and check CRA My Account if one is missing.

Line 23600 is net income. Start from total income on line 15000, then subtract the deductions listed above it: registered pension and RRSP contributions, union and professional dues, child care costs, moving expenses, support payments, employment expenses and similar claims. Net income drives most income-tested credits and benefits, so an error there changes benefit entitlement as well as tax. Tax software totals the line automatically from the slips and claims you enter, but check the deduction list yourself.

A tax is a compulsory payment to government, set by law rather than agreed by contract, used to fund public services. In Canada the main ones are income tax on what you earn, sales taxes such as GST and HST on what you buy, payroll contributions on employment income, and property tax charged by municipalities. Nothing specific is bought in return for the payment, and that is what separates a tax from a fee.

Usually a tax preparer, tax accountant, or bookkeeper, depending on what they actually do. In Canada no single licence is required to prepare someone else's return, so the titles vary widely and are worth asking about. To transmit your return electronically a preparer needs an EFILE number from the CRA, and to discuss your file with the CRA they must be authorised as your representative, either through My Account or with an AUT-01. Confirm the scope and the fee before work starts.

Child care is a deduction rather than a refund, so what comes back depends on your marginal tax rate: the higher the rate, the more each dollar of eligible care saves you. The deduction is also capped by the age of each child, by what you actually paid, and by a share of the earned income of the person making the claim. Two families paying identical daycare fees can therefore see very different refunds.

Owing tax does not disqualify you, though it can complicate approval. Lenders ask for filed returns and notices of assessment, and a self-employed applicant is usually assessed on the income reported there. An unpaid balance shows on the notice, and where the CRA has registered a lien against the property the lender will want it cleared first. Filed returns, a documented payment arrangement and a record of keeping to it all help. Requirements vary by lender.
