Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support: Our Analysis

SR&ED refunds reach 35% federally for CCPCs on the first $3 million of qualified expenditures, with provincial top-ups in most provinces. Our insolvency and restructuring tax support engagement is priced as a budget-friendly flat fee, so the cost is known before the work starts.

Working Notes From Our Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support Files

What actually separates a clean insolvency and restructuring tax support file from a messy one? A working accountant would point to a short list of rules, and these notes walk through it.

If a client remembers only one point from this page, it should be this one: A review is won on documentation created at the time, not on explanations offered afterwards. The CRA asks for the source records behind a figure, and an unsupported claim is simply disallowed. Most reassessments we reverse are not the result of a wrong position — they are the result of a correct position with no contemporaneous paper trail behind it.

Right behind it comes a rule owners rarely hear about until it bites: The VDP can waive gross-negligence penalties and part of the interest on unreported income or unfiled returns — but only while the disclosure is genuinely voluntary. The window closes the moment the CRA makes contact about the issue. Acting before that letter arrives is worth real money. The final point is less about opportunity and more about what happens when a file is challenged: The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay.

So where does that leave you? In most cases, with a decision about whether to work through insolvency and restructuring tax support alone or hand the moving parts to a tax consultant who tracks them for a living. Every insolvency and restructuring tax support file rests on documentation, so start by collecting.

The last note is about how we work rather than the rules: every engagement comes with a fixed fee agreed up front, a review with you before filing, and payment after — not before — the service.

Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support Tax & Accounting Case Studies

See how our expert Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support tax and accounting services have helped Canadian businesses save money and stay compliant.

Case Study 1

Remuneration Review Saved $52,000 Across Corporate And Personal Returns — Employer Under Payroll Review, Windsor

A remuneration review at a company facing a payroll trust examination in Windsor, Ontario saved $52,000 across the corporate and personal returns. It found a proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled.

Nothing was wrong at a company facing a payroll trust examination in Windsor, Ontario. The filings were on time and accurate. What they were not was planned. A proposal letter with a 30-day response window and no supporting records assembled had never been reviewed. We assembled the contemporaneous records, filed a structured response to each proposed adjustment with the supporting documents indexed, and had the proposal withdrawn. We ran the numbers across both the corporate and personal returns, so the saving was real rather than deferred into someone else's hands. $52,000 came off the combined corporate and personal tax bill, and the structure holds for future years without further work.

Case Study 2

Filed On Time From A Standing Start, $117,000 Penalty Avoided — Taxpayer Facing Collections, Lethbridge

A taxpayer with frozen bank accounts in Lethbridge, Alberta was 10 weeks from a deadline. The file also carried a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. Filing complete and on time avoided roughly $117,000 in penalties.

A taxpayer with frozen bank accounts in Lethbridge, Alberta came to us 10 weeks before its filing deadline. The file came with a waiver signed at the counter that kept an otherwise closed year open with no end date. A late filing would have triggered a penalty of roughly $117,000 before interest. We worked backwards from the deadline. We requested the auditor’s working papers and report to see how the assessment had been built before answering any of it. We prioritised the items that actually gated the filing and deferred everything that did not. The return was filed on time and complete. The $117,000 penalty never arose, and the compliance calendar we set means the next deadline is scheduled rather than discovered.

Case Study 3

Collections Halted And $141,000 Cut From A 3-Year Backlog — Family Business Under Review, Edmonton

Collections had begun against a family business under a related-party review in Edmonton, Alberta over 3 years of unfiled returns. Bringing them current cut $141,000 from the balance.

By the time a family business under a related-party review in Edmonton, Alberta called, 3 years were outstanding. The CRA had assessed on estimates. Underneath it sat a net-worth assessment built on unexplained deposits that were actually loan proceeds. We reconstructed the records year by year. We filed the Tax Court appeal inside the window and resolved the remaining adjustments before a hearing date was needed. Each filing replaced an arbitrary assessment with a real one. The account is current. Filing on real numbers rather than CRA estimates reduced the balance by $141,000, and a relief application addressed part of the accumulated interest.

Case Study 4

Audit Defence Closed In 4 Weeks, $115,000 Cleared — Importer Under Audit, Halifax

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Halifax, Nova Scotia was under review. The issue was a confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed. The file closed in 4 weeks with $115,000 of proposed tax cleared.

An importer under a customs and GST audit in Halifax, Nova Scotia was selected for review. A confirmation letter left in a drawer until the appeal window had closed had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on insolvency and restructuring tax support came to $115,000. We kept the waiver narrowed to the issue actually under review and let the remaining years close on the normal reassessment period. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $115,000 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 5

$21,000 Of Working Capital Freed From The Tax Cycle — Late-Objection Taxpayer, Regina

A taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Regina, Saskatchewan was profitable and permanently short of cash. Behind the gap sat an objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for. Restructuring the tax cycle freed $21,000.

A taxpayer whose objection window has closed in Regina, Saskatchewan was profitable on paper and short of cash every month. An objection deadline that had passed with no extension applied for explained most of the gap. We answered each query in writing with an indexed document package, so the file showed exactly what the auditor had received and on what date. We also built a thirteen-week cash view so tax payments stopped competing with payroll for the same dollars. $21,000 was released back into working capital. Remittances have been on time every period since, and the forecast shows the tax outflow before it lands.

Case Study 6

Notice Of Objection Allowed In Full, $80,000 Reversed — Voluntary Disclosure Applicant, Moncton

An $80,000 reassessment landed at a business owner considering a voluntary disclosure in Moncton, New Brunswick. It rested on six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. The objection was allowed in full.

A business owner considering a voluntary disclosure in Moncton, New Brunswick had been reassessed for $80,000. 17 days were left on the objection deadline. The reassessment rested on six years of unfiled corporate and personal returns and an active collections file. We filed the objection inside the deadline with a complete submission rather than a placeholder. Alongside it, we filed the disclosure through the Voluntary Disclosures Program before contact, which removed the gross-negligence penalty entirely. The appeals officer allowed the objection in full. $80,000 was reversed and the account returned to a nil balance.

Before You Call: Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support FAQs

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

How much does Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support cost in Canada?

Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support starts at a fixed fee quoted before any work begins. The quote is locked at the outset and does not change mid-engagement, and you pay only after you have reviewed and approved the deliverable. Compare every plan on our transparent pricing page.

What documents do I need for Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support?

At minimum: prior-year returns and notices of assessment, your bank and credit-card statements for the fiscal period, payroll records if you have employees, and GST/HST filings. We send a checklist tailored to your situation after the free 15-minute call.

How long does Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support take?

Most engagements are completed within 3 to 5 business days once your documents are complete. Catch-up work covering multiple years takes longer, and we tell you the realistic timeline before you commit rather than after.

What happens if the CRA reviews or audits my filing?

We respond on your behalf at no extra charge for any return we prepared. Every figure we file is supported by documentation retained in your file, which is what turns a CRA review from a crisis into correspondence. See how our CRA audit representation works.

Can you handle late or missed filings?

Yes. Late filing penalties compound at 5% of the balance owing plus 1% per month, so the cost of waiting is real. We prioritise catch-up work and, where eligible, file under the CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program to reduce penalties.

Do you work with businesses outside major cities?

Yes. We serve clients in every province and territory at the same fixed fees, so your location does not change the price or the service. Browse our coverage across Canada to find your city.

Which industries do you specialise in for Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support?

We work across construction, healthcare, e-commerce, professional services, restaurants, real estate, transportation, technology and non-profits, each with its own deduction profile and CRA scrutiny patterns. See all industries we serve.

What makes Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support different from filing it myself?

Software applies the rules you already know about. An experienced tax accountant finds the ones you do not: capital cost allowance timing, the small business deduction threshold, shareholder loan repayment rules, and TOSI exposure on family dividends. The fee is usually smaller than the deductions it surfaces.

What is included in Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support services?

Our insolvency and restructuring tax support services include complete filing, compliance management, and strategic advice customized to Canadian tax laws.

How do I start with Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support services?

You can start by booking a free 15-minute call. We will review your files, provide a fixed quote, and start working immediately.

What does a tax consultant actually check during insolvency and restructuring tax support?

There is a widespread assumption here, and the actual position is worth stating plainly. The late-filing penalty is 5% of the balance owing plus 1% for each full month late, to a maximum of twelve months. A second late filing within three years doubles both figures. The penalty is calculated on the balance owing, so a late return with nothing owing costs nothing — which is why filing on time matters even when you cannot pay. If your current setup was built on the assumption instead of the rule, that is fixable — but sooner is better than later.

What goes wrong most often with insolvency and restructuring tax support?

A notice of objection is generally due 90 days from the date of the notice of assessment. Individuals can instead object up to one year after the filing due date if that is later; corporations have only the 90 days. Any taxpayer who misses the deadline can apply for an extension within the following year. We flag this early with every client it touches, because finding it out at filing time leaves you far fewer options than finding it out now.

Commonly Searched Insolvency and Restructuring Tax Support Questions

The questions Canadians actually search on this topic, answered plainly. Browse every question in the Canadian tax answers directory.

Sign in to CRA My Account, or use the CRA's mobile app, where the return shows as received, in process or assessed, and the refund amount and payment date appear once it has been assessed. The CRA also runs an automated telephone service giving the same information. A representative you have authorised through Represent a Client can check it for you. If the status has not moved past the published processing time, the return is probably under review.

Most enquiries are settled without a phone call in My Account, My Business Account or Represent a Client, where assessments, balances, slips and CRA mail all sit. When you need a person, use the enquiries line for your programme from the contact page on canada.ca, and have your social insurance or business number plus a figure from a recent return ready for identity checks. Written enquiries go to the tax centre named on your notice of assessment.

Revenue Canada is the former name of the Canada Revenue Agency. The CRA is the federal body that administers income tax, GST/HST, payroll deductions and benefit payments such as the Canada child benefit, and it collects provincial income tax for every province except Quebec, which runs its own personal system through Revenu Québec. The old name is still in everyday use, so paying Revenue Canada means paying the CRA, and a letter from either is the same agency.

File an Access to Information or Privacy Act request with the CRA. Personal records about yourself go through the Privacy Act; other records through Access to Information. You can submit online through the federal ATIP portal or send the government's request form to the CRA's access and privacy office, describing the records and period you want. A request for your own personal information has no application fee; access requests carry a small one. Audit working papers are commonly obtained this way.

The CRA does not usually move a due date, but you can ask for a payment arrangement that spreads the balance over time. Interest keeps running while you pay. Apply through My Account, My Business Account, or the CRA's debt management call centre. Where interest or penalties arose from circumstances beyond your control, ask for relief using form RC4288. British Columbia's property tax deferment program is a separate provincial scheme with its own application.

Work down the page. Total income comes first, then deductions, which give net income and taxable income. Below that, federal and provincial tax are calculated, non-refundable credits are subtracted, and amounts already paid — tax withheld on slips and any instalments — are applied. The last line is your refund or balance owing. Then compare it with your notice of assessment, because the CRA may have changed a figure while processing the return.

Call the individual or business tax enquiries line listed on the CRA's Contact us page, then work through the automated menu to reach an agent. Have your social insurance number or business number, your date of birth and a line amount from your last assessed return ready, because the agent cannot discuss your file without them. Wait times are longest right after the filing deadline. My Account answers many questions without a call.

Yes. Maternity and parental benefits are taxable income for the year you receive them and appear on the benefits slip Service Canada issues. Tax is withheld at source, usually at a rate below your overall rate, so a balance owing at filing is normal, particularly if you worked part of the year or your employer added a top-up. Quebec parental insurance benefits are taxable in the same way and come with their own slip.

Rental profit is taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate; there is no special landlord rate. You report gross rent and deduct current expenses such as mortgage interest, property tax, insurance, utilities, repairs, advertising, condo fees and reasonable management costs. Capital improvements are added to the property's cost rather than deducted. A rental loss can generally offset other income. On sale, the gain is a capital gain, half of which is taxable for 2025 and 2026.

Yes. Provincial and territorial governments generally pay GST/HST on their purchases and recover it through their arrangements with the federal government, so invoice a government department the way you would any other customer. A small number of buyers hold documented relief, including certain Indigenous purchases and specific certificate arrangements, and that relief has to be evidenced when the sale is made. Keep the documentation with the invoice, because the CRA will otherwise look to you for the tax.

The CRA will not hand your return to a former spouse. Your tax information is confidential, and only you or a representative you have authorised can obtain it. Family law is separate: for support or property matters you can be required, by agreement or court order, to disclose returns and notices of assessment. Tell the CRA when your marital status changes, since benefits and credits are then recalculated on your own income.

The CRA applies its prescribed arrears interest rate, which is reset each quarter and compounded daily, to any balance left unpaid after the deadline. There is no fixed annual figure to quote, so check the current quarter's rate on canada.ca before estimating what you owe. Interest on personal income tax arrears is not deductible, and paying part of the balance immediately reduces the amount interest is calculated on for the rest of the period.
