Key Terms in Immigration Consultants Filing

T1 General
The personal income tax return individuals file with the CRA each year.
T2 Corporate Return
The corporate income tax return every incorporated Canadian business must file.
GST/HST Return
The sales-tax return businesses file to remit GST/HST collected, net of input tax credits.
Immigration Consultants: Our Analysis

Immigration Consultants carry their own CRA profile, and generic bookkeeping misses it. Since the WIP election was phased out, professionals are taxed on work in progress, which makes month-end WIP valuation a real tax number rather than a bookkeeping detail. We price the whole engagement as one budget-friendly fixed fee, quoted before work begins.

What We Notice Preparing Immigration Consultants Files

The Immigration Consultants files we review from other preparers share a common flaw: the return is arithmetically correct and strategically silent. Getting the sector treatment right takes more than software.

Start with the rule that decides most files: Departure from Canada triggers a deemed disposition of most property at fair market value. The resulting gain has to be reported on the final resident return.

Pair that with the next rule and most of the confusion around immigration consultants disappears: A payment to a non-resident for services performed in Canada is subject to 15 percent withholding under Regulation 105. That applies whether or not the non-resident ends up owing Canadian tax. A waiver has to be applied for before the payment is made, and the payer that withheld nothing is the one assessed.

Fixed fee agreed up front, sector-experienced preparation, and you pay after the work is reviewed.

Immigration Consultants: the tax rules that actually apply

Every engagement we run for Immigration Consultants starts from the same question: which professional services rules apply to this file, and which of them is the client currently getting wrong? These are the ones that come up most.

What the CRA looks at

Partner draws are not salary. Drawing ahead of allocated income creates a debit capital account the CRA can treat as a shareholder-style benefit on audit.

A practice billing one dominant client through a corporation risks the personal services business designation, which strips the small business deduction and denies almost every expense except salary.

What you can actually claim

Practice-management software, secure client portals and cyber-liability cover are current expenses, while the licence itself may be a Class 12 or Class 50 capital asset.

Professional liability insurance, licensing body dues and mandatory continuing education are fully deductible, while the personal-benefit portion of club memberships is not.

The filing calendar that applies

Partnerships crossing $2 million in combined revenue and expenses, or holding a corporate partner, must file the T5013 information return by March 31.

An incorporated practice files the T2 within six months of year-end, with the balance due two months after (three for a CCPC claiming the small business deduction).

Where the planning value sits

Passive investment income above $50,000 a year grinds the small business deduction dollar for dollar, so retained earnings need a deliberate investment plan.

The salary-versus-dividend mix is where the money is: salary creates RRSP room and CPP entitlement, dividends avoid payroll remittances, and the right split changes with the owner's draw.

None of this is charged as extra advice. It is simply what a properly prepared file for Immigration Consultants includes, at the fixed fee agreed up front.

Immigration Consultants Tax & Accounting Case Studies

Case Study 1

$70,000 Of Arbitrary Assessments Vacated After 4 Years — Recruitment Firm, Calgary

The CRA had assessed a recruitment firm in Calgary, Alberta on estimates across 4 unfiled years. Real filings vacated $70,000 of that tax.

4 years of unfiled returns had turned into notional assessments at a recruitment firm in Calgary, Alberta. Underneath lay seasonal revenue reported without matching the costs that produced it. Collections had already started. We documented the positions to the standard the CRA applies to this sector specifically. We then filed every outstanding year in chronological order so the CRA could vacate the notional assessments cleanly. All 4 years were accepted as filed. $70,000 of arbitrarily assessed tax was vacated, collections action stopped, and the account is current for the first time in 4 years.

Case Study 2

Month-End Close Cut From 7 Weeks To 10 Days — Architecture Studio, Hamilton

Closing the books at an architecture studio in Hamilton, Ontario took 7 weeks. The cause was equipment and asset classes assigned by guesswork rather than the CCA schedule. It now takes 10 days.

The accounting file at an architecture studio in Hamilton, Ontario had a weak foundation. It was built on equipment and asset classes assigned by guesswork rather than the CCA schedule. The year-end had taken 7 weeks each of the last three years. We reviewed every sector-specific deduction against the current rules and claimed the ones that had been missed. We also moved the reconciliations into the monthly cycle, so the year-end stopped being a rebuild. The file reconciles. Month-end closes in 10 days instead of 7 weeks, and the year-end is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Case Study 3

Audit Defence Closed In 4 Weeks, $131,000 Cleared — Two-Partner Engineering Practice, Brampton

A two-partner engineering practice in Brampton, Ontario was under review. The issue was sector deductions claimed on a general-business basis rather than the immigration consultants rules. The file closed in 4 weeks with $131,000 of proposed tax cleared.

A two-partner engineering practice in Brampton, Ontario was selected for review. Sector deductions claimed on a general-business basis rather than the immigration consultants rules had shown up in the CRA's automated matching. The proposed adjustment on immigration consultants accounting and tax came to $131,000. We rebuilt the chart of accounts around how an immigration consultants business actually earns and spends. Every figure in the response traced to a source record the auditor could verify without asking a second question. The review closed with no change. $131,000 of proposed tax came off the table, and the documentation now in place makes the next review a short one.

Case Study 4

Holding Structure Added, $55,000 Saved Annually — Executive Coaching Practice, Moncton

An executive coaching practice in Moncton, New Brunswick needed a holding structure. It had to deal with industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged. The reorganisation was tax-neutral and removed $55,000 of annual exposure.

The structure at an executive coaching practice in Moncton, New Brunswick needed fixing. The file was carrying industry-specific reporting obligations nobody had flagged. Every option for fixing it ran through a reorganisation that had to be done without triggering tax. We worked with the client's lawyer. Together, we reassigned the asset classes on the CCA schedule and corrected the opening balances. We also prepared the elections, resolutions and valuations the structure needed to stand up. The structure now matches the business. Annual saving of $55,000, and the reorganisation itself was tax-neutral.

Case Study 5

Instalments Rebased, $84,000 Of Cash Returned To The Business — Insurance Brokerage, Vancouver

An insurance brokerage in Vancouver, British Columbia was overpaying instalments. The cause was a chart of accounts that told the owner nothing about immigration consultants margin. Rebasing them returned $84,000 to the business.

An insurance brokerage in Vancouver, British Columbia was paying instalments calculated on a prior year. That year no longer reflected the business. A chart of accounts that told the owner nothing about immigration consultants margin was tying up $84,000 of cash. We rebased the instalments on the current-year estimate rather than the prior-year default. Alongside that, we aligned the reporting calendar with the sector’s own seasonal cycle rather than a generic year-end. $84,000 of cash stayed in the business, the penalty cycle ended, and the instalment position is reviewed each quarter against actual results.

Case Study 6

$68,000 In Credits Claimed That Prior Filings Had Missed — Translation Services Company, Surrey

4 years of filings at a translation services company in Surrey, British Columbia had never claimed the incentives the work qualified for. The review recovered $68,000.

A translation services company in Surrey, British Columbia had been filing for 4 years. In that time, the incentives its activity qualified for were never claimed. Behind that sat provincial credits left unclaimed alongside every federal filing. We tested each activity against the eligibility criteria rather than the description on the invoice. Then we documented the positions to the standard the CRA applies to this sector specifically. $68,000 in credits claimed, with the open prior years adjusted as well. The claim passed review without adjustment.

Immigration Consultants: Straight Answers to Common Questions

Direct answers to what Canadian business owners actually ask before hiring an accountant.

Can a immigration consultants business deduct vehicle costs?

Yes, in proportion to business use, and the logbook is what supports it. The CRA accepts a full-year log, or a three-month sample backed by a complete prior-year log. Travel between home and a regular place of work is personal; travel between work locations is business.

Should a immigration consultants business incorporate?

Incorporation usually pays once profit consistently exceeds what the owner draws personally, because the retained amount is taxed at small business rates rather than personal rates. Where the entire profit is withdrawn each year, incorporation often costs more in filing and compliance than it saves.

What triggers a CRA audit for a immigration consultants business?

Ratios that sit outside sector norms, repeated losses, large or round-numbered expense claims, and mismatches between filed slips and reported income. Most reviews are resolved on documentation alone, which is why contemporaneous records matter more than the size of any single claim.

How are employees and subcontractors treated differently for a immigration consultants business?

The CRA looks at control, ownership of tools, chance of profit and risk of loss rather than what the contract is titled. Where a worker is reclassified as an employee, the unremitted CPP, EI and withholding land on the payer, together with penalties and interest.

What instalments does a immigration consultants business have to pay?

Individuals pay quarterly instalments once net tax owing passes $3,000 in the current year and either of the two preceding years. Corporations generally pay monthly, with many small CCPCs eligible for quarterly instalments instead. Basing them on a current-year estimate avoids overpaying after a strong year.

What tax deductions are immigration consultants businesses most likely to miss?

The recurring ones are capital cost allowance on equipment placed in service late in the year, the business-use portion of vehicle and home-office costs, and professional development. Each is defensible when documented at the time and difficult to defend when reconstructed later.

How much does accounting for immigration consultants businesses cost?

Corporate tax filing starts at $90 and bookkeeping at $10 per month, quoted as a fixed fee before work begins. Sector complexity does not trigger a surcharge. Review the full price list.

Do immigration consultants businesses need to register for GST/HST?

Registration is mandatory once taxable revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive quarters. Registering voluntarily below that threshold is often worthwhile, because it lets you recover input tax credits on startup and equipment purchases.

What does "Pay After Service" mean?

Our Pay After Service model means you review and approve all deliverables before making any payment. We prepare your returns or financial files, you review them, and only then do you pay. This ensures 100% satisfaction.

How does price matching work?

If you find a lower verified quote from another accounting firm in Canada for the same scope of services, we will match it immediately. Simply provide a verified quote.

How do I submit my tax documents?

We support completely secure digital uploads via our client portal, or you can email them to us. We support files from QuickBooks, Xero, Excel, and scan/photo documents.

What does the CRA look at most closely in immigration consultants?

Let us give you the substance first and the caveats second. A CCPC files its T2 within six months of year-end, with the balance due two months after (three where the small business deduction is claimed). The 9% federal small business rate applies to the first $500,000 of active business income. The filing and payment deadlines differ, and interest runs from the payment date. Filing on time while paying late still costs money. The caveat is simply that facts on your file can shift the outcome, so treat this as the baseline rather than the final word.

What tax issues come up most often in the immigration consultants sector?

A tax consultant answers this differently than a search engine, because the rule has edges. The T1135 foreign income verification statement is required once specified foreign property exceeds $100,000 in cost. Late-filing penalties start at $25 a day to a maximum of $2,500 per year, before gross-negligence penalties. Where your business sits relative to those edges is what we establish in the first meeting.

Income tax starts once taxable income passes the basic personal amount, and a separate provincial or territorial amount applies on top, so the break-even point shifts every year with indexation and differs by where you live. Look up the current amounts on the CRA site or in the year's return package. Credits for tuition, disability, pension income or dependants push the point higher. Filing can still be worthwhile or required with no tax owing, for benefits and credits.

Yes. Rent you receive is taxable income. You report the gross rents, subtract deductible expenses such as mortgage interest, property tax, insurance, utilities you pay, repairs, condominium fees and advertising, and the net rental profit is added to your other income and taxed at your marginal rate. There is no separate rental tax rate. A rental loss can generally offset other income where the property is genuinely rented at fair market value.

Rent paid is not deductible on the federal return. Relief comes instead through provincial credits claimed on the provincial form filed with your T1, such as Ontario's energy and property tax credit, Manitoba's renters credit and Quebec's solidarity tax credit, each with its own residency and income tests. Rent is deductible only as a business or employment cost: the work-space-in-the-home share on a T2125, or with an employer-signed form where an employee is required to work from home.

No. The fuel charge applies to fuels, not tobacco. Cigarettes carry federal excise duty, a provincial or territorial tobacco tax, and GST or HST on the shelf price, which is why tax makes up most of what you pay. Duty and tobacco tax rates move with budgets and some federal rates are adjusted annually, so check the CRA excise duty rates page and your province's tobacco tax page rather than an older figure.

A ratepayer is someone who pays municipal rates, meaning property taxes and local utility charges, on property they own or occupy. The municipality sets a rate against assessed value, bills the ratepayer, and funds local services from what it collects; ratepayer associations speak for owners in an area. Property tax is municipal and quite separate from income tax, though on a rental or business property it is generally deductible against that income.

Property tax is municipal. Your city, town or rural municipality sets the annual rate and issues the bill, inside a framework the province sets: provinces create municipalities, run the assessment bodies that value properties, and add the education or school-support levy that appears on the same bill. The federal government has no role in property tax at all, so neither the CRA nor your income tax return is where a property tax dispute is settled. The municipality is.
