Three things come off: income tax, CPP and EI. Income tax withheld depends on your pay, your province and the credits claimed on the forms you gave your employer, so it follows your marginal rate rather than a flat percentage. For 2026, CPP is 5.95% of pensionable earnings between the $3,500 exemption and $74,600, plus a second 4% on earnings from $74,600 to $85,000; EI is $1.63 per $100 of insurable earnings to $68,900.

Why is so much tax coming off my paycheque?
Your employer withholds federal income tax plus Manitoba provincial tax, and adds CPP contributions and EI premiums. The amount depends on gross pay, pay frequency and the credits claimed on your federal and Manitoba TD1 forms. Manitoba sets its own brackets and its own basic personal amount, so the provincial share differs from other provinces. Run the gross figure through the CRA payroll deductions online calculator to see the exact split for your pay period.

For tax, the working test is the small business deduction: a Canadian-controlled private corporation pays the federal small business rate of 9% for 2026 on the first $500,000 of active business income, with a provincial small business rate on top, such as Ontario's 3.2% falling to 2.2% from 1 July 2026. Large passive investment income grinds the federal limit down. Grant and lending programmes use their own tests, usually employee count or revenue.

Nothing stops you. A sole proprietor can file a T2125 with a personal return in commercial tax software, and that is manageable when the records are tidy. A corporate T2 is a bigger job: financial statement schedules in the CRA's prescribed format, capital cost allowance continuity, the small business deduction, shareholder transactions and provincial allocation all have to line up, and for tax years beginning after 2023 electronic filing is mandatory for essentially every corporation, whatever its gross revenue. Fixing errors later usually costs more.

Yes. Accommodation supplied for a period of continuous occupancy of less than one month is a taxable supply, so GST or HST applies at the rate for the province where the hotel sits — unless the charge is no more than $20 for each day of occupancy, which is exempt however long the stay. Many provinces and cities add an accommodation or destination marketing levy on top, and short-term rental platforms collect the same charges. A GST/HST registered business traveller can usually recover the GST/HST portion as an input tax credit, but not the municipal levy. Levies vary by city, so read the folio line by line.
