What is a tax?
Very little. There is no general exempt status for individuals: residents report worldwide income. You simply pay no federal tax when taxable income sits below the basic personal amount, which for 2026 is $16,452 and is reduced for high earners. Employment or business income that a registered Indian earns on a reserve can be exempt under the Indian Act, and some diplomatic situations are treated specially. Filing is still worth doing, because benefits and credits depend on an assessed return.

What tax do status Indians pay in Ontario?
Taxes fund the services governments deliver, including health care, schools, roads, policing, pensions and benefit programs, and they are also how income is redistributed through refundable credits. For you as a taxpayer, filing matters beyond the tax itself: the CRA uses your assessed return to calculate benefits, credits and RRSP room, and to confirm income for loans or immigration. Filing on time also avoids penalties and interest on any balance.
How much can you earn in a year without paying income tax?
Is there a no-tax period or tax-free amount in Canada?
How much can you earn before getting taxed in Canada?
What is the tax system in Canada and how is it structured?
Neither, strictly: the brackets apply to taxable income. You begin with total income, subtract deductions such as RRSP contributions, union dues and childcare to reach net income, then take the remaining deductions to reach taxable income, and the rates apply to that. Credits are different again and come off the tax itself, starting with the federal basic personal amount of $16,452 for 2026, which tapers for high earners.

On purchases, Quebec charges 9.975% QST on the pre-GST price plus the 5% federal GST, so 14.975% combined for 2026, or $14.98 of tax on a $100 purchase. On income, the 2026 federal brackets are 14%, 20.5%, 26%, 29% and 33%, with Quebec's own brackets on top; residents file two returns and federal tax is reduced by the Quebec abatement. Check the current Revenu Quebec table for provincial rates.
How do I find my taxable income?
How can I reduce my income tax in Canada?
What taxes do you pay in New Brunswick?
Yes. Quebec residents pay federal income tax like other Canadians, but Quebec is the only province that collects its own personal income tax, so you file two returns: a T1 with the CRA and a separate Quebec return with Revenu Quebec. A federal abatement reduces the federal tax Quebec residents pay, because Quebec funds certain programs directly. Province-wide revenue totals are published by Finance Canada, not by the CRA.

What is the lowest tax bracket in Canada?
Low income has no single legal definition in Nova Scotia. Statistics Canada publishes three measures, the low income cut-off, the low income measure and the market basket measure, each adjusted for household size and community, with the market basket measure serving as Canada's official poverty line. Provincial credits such as the affordable living tax credit and the poverty reduction credit instead test net family income against thresholds published for each benefit year, so the answer depends on which programme you are asking about.

How do I know whether I will get a refund or owe tax?
You get a refund when the tax withheld from your pay or paid by instalments is more than the tax you owe once your credits and deductions are applied. Working through your T1 with all your slips is the only way to know for certain. After you file, the notice of assessment confirms the amount, and CRA My Account shows the status. Online returns are usually processed in about two weeks.
Does the notice of assessment come before the refund?
What percentage of income tax comes back as a refund?
When do tax refunds come in Ontario?
When does the government issue tax refunds, and why do they happen?
An online return is usually processed in about two weeks. A non-resident return can take up to 16 weeks. Those timings assume the return is complete, your direct deposit details are current, and the CRA is not reviewing a claim or applying the refund against another balance you owe. Track the status in CRA My Account instead of waiting on the mail, and file early in the season for an earlier assessment.

A direct deposit from the CRA normally carries a description naming the Canada Revenue Agency or a federal payment code, and a refund of income tax often appears as Canada RIT. Benefit and credit payments use their own labels. The amount can differ from the refund on your return if the CRA adjusted the assessment or applied part of it to another balance you owe. Online returns are generally processed in about two weeks.

No. Canada uses graduated rates. Federal tax for 2026 begins at 14% on the lowest bracket and rises through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33% at the top, and every province layers its own brackets on that. Only the income falling inside a bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, so a raise never re-taxes everything you earned. Credits, deductions, dependants and the kind of income you receive change the final bill again.

Tax rises in steps with income. Federal rates for 2026 begin at 14% and move through 20.5%, 26% and 29% to 33%, and every province adds its own brackets on top, so your marginal rate is the two combined. Only the income falling inside a bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, so your average rate is always lower than your top rate. Credits, starting with the basic personal amount, cut the total further.
How do I work out how much money I keep after taxes?
How much income tax do you pay on $40,000 in Canada?
Start from gross pay for the period, then subtract CPP contributions, EI premiums and the federal and provincial income tax withheld, plus anything else coming off such as pension contributions or union dues. What is left is net pay. For 2026, CPP is 5.95% of pensionable earnings above the $3,500 basic exemption up to a $74,600 ceiling, and EI is $1.63 per $100 up to $68,900. The CRA's payroll deductions online calculator handles the arithmetic by province.
How much is sales tax in Vancouver?
How much will I take home after tax?
Taxable income taxed slice by slice at each bracket rate, less your non-refundable credits, gives basic federal tax payable; provincial tax is worked out the same way and added. Then subtract tax already withheld at source and any instalments paid, and the result is your balance owing or refund. Because the system taxes in slices, a raise is taxed only at the rate for the slice it lands in. The CRA's rates and brackets page carries the current figures.

Ontario's HST is 13% for 2025 and 2026. Divide the tax-included total by 1.13 to get the pre-tax amount, then subtract it from the total; or multiply the total by 13 and divide by 113 to reach the tax directly. So $113 includes $13 of HST. Registrants use this when a receipt shows only a total, but you still need a receipt carrying the supplier's registration number to claim the input tax credit.

Preparing a straightforward T1 with a few slips takes under an hour once your documents are together; a self-employment or rental return takes longer because the income and expenses have to be summarised first. Filing itself is immediate online. After that, expect about two weeks for a refund on an online return. Gathering slips is usually the slow part, so collect them before you start.

Your tax is calculated on your own income alone, so a partner's earnings cannot push you into a higher bracket. Their net income does drive income-tested amounts: the spouse or common-law partner credit, the GST/HST credit, the Canada child benefit and most provincial benefits are based on combined family income. Certain credits and eligible pension income can also be transferred or split between partners. That is why the CRA asks for the figure on both returns.
