A nanny's wages qualify as child care expenses, claimed by the lower-income spouse under the same age and earned-income limits that apply to daycare. Hiring a nanny also makes you an employer: you register a payroll account, withhold income tax, CPP and EI, remit on the schedule the CRA sets and issue a T4. Only the amount genuinely paid for care is claimable, so a cash arrangement with no records will not survive review.

Rent is not a deduction in Ontario, but the rent you paid feeds the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit. You apply by completing the Ontario benefits application filed with your T1 return, giving the total rent paid for the year and the address it was paid for. Eligibility and the amount depend on your income, family situation and age, and the benefit is paid out over the year rather than inside your refund.

Usually not. A bursary, scholarship or fellowship you receive as a student is reported on a slip, but the scholarship exemption removes it from income where you are enrolled in a program that qualifies for the education amount; full-time study, and elementary or secondary school, are fully exempt. Part-time students get a narrower exemption tied to tuition and materials. Amounts for research or for a program with no tuition can be taxable, so check the CRA's scholarship exemption page.

Canada taxes residents on worldwide income and non-residents only on Canadian-source income. The system is self-assessed: you report income on a T1 return, subtract deductions, apply credits, then pay federal plus provincial tax at graduated rates on the result, with employers withholding through payroll during the year. The 2025 return was due 30 April 2026. Sales tax, property tax and payroll contributions sit on top of income tax.

No. The Canada Carbon Rebate, earlier called the climate action incentive payment, was never taxable, is not reported as income and does not reduce your other credits. Eligibility depended on residing in a province where the federal fuel charge applied and on filing a return, which is how the CRA identified you. The federal fuel charge rates were set to zero effective 1 April 2025 and the final Canada Carbon Rebate was issued that same month, so no further payments are coming.
